“Business trip to Baku”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2012

The hotel is located within Old city, very close to all Baku monuments and of course authorities/companies etc. The rooms are very clean and large, however the wifi seems to have serious issues. Breakfast buffet is considered adequate and the overall impression for the personnel is good. In general the hotel doesn't stand even close to the western 5 star standards (it has an Azerbaijan's Tourism Ministry 5 star rating) but you will have a descent accommodation in the hurt of the city.

A few years back this was probably a very good hotel. It's location in the heart of the Old City is great, but the interior is starting to look tired and dated, the breakfast is fairly basic and the staff whilst friendly don't quite reach international 4* standards. An example, the temperature outside was -4 and the heating inside broke for 72 hours, the staff thought it was something to laugh about and it took some effort to make them realise that it was actually a very serious issue and they needed to either fix it fast, provide heaters or find alternative accommodation. Once it did sink in they moved quickly and where very helpful.

Given that competition is increasing with a number of quirky, designer boutique hotels springing up around the Old City and international chains outside, the Atropat needs to up its game to stay in the running.

The Atropat is not far from Fountain Square or the attractions of the Old City. The people working there are mostly not very good, being curt, forgetful and somewhat incompetent. The hotel does live up to what it promises from a buffet breakfast to wake up calls. I stayed at the Atropat for two weeks and there was a buffet breakfast on two or three days, most days they just don't feel like doing that. The people agree to wake up calls and then the wake up calls do not occur. You cannot rely on the hotel staff for a wakeup call or to get you a taxi but the hotel is decent even though it has a very hard bed. I don't know what other boutique hotels in Baku are like but the Atropat, despite all of the problems which included losing heat, electricity and internet for large parts of three days, was a fine place to stay. It was clean, the bathroom and especially the shower was great and I was comfortable in my room. If you care about the view from your room though, do not stay at the Atropat as you look out onto decrepit buildings. You can also negotiate the price down, I got the price to drop by 50 dollars when I got to the hotel and saw how empty it was.

Temper your expectations that this isn't a 5 star hotel of the four seasons level. But neither is the price and all in all I enjoyed my 2 night stay on business. Good room, great wifi, good location and helpful staff. Breakfast is mediocre but you can't have everything. I'd stay there again quite happily

I really liked this hotel; the rooms are excellent and air conditioned, the staff are extremely helpful, the wireless works and is reasonably fast and the rooftop bar has great views over Baku bay. The Atropat is at the top of the old town, close to the Shirvan Shah palace, but it's a short walk to all the sights.

The hotel is situated in the heart of the walled old city in one of the side streets about 5 mins walk away from the maiden tower. This may be difficult for those who want to use public transport or taxi, luckily a colleague of mine was helping out with driving. I was staying in a standard room, which was quite big, and luckily was decorated with some originality. The service in the hotel was good, the staff was very kind and attentive, but they were not professionals and were not trained by one of the great hotel chains. This was not a problem at all by the way, it made the hotel more charming in fact. I would say that I have stayed in better four star hotels, but those were more expensive as well, so the price/quality is ok in a sense. Wi-fi and breakfast was included in the price, and breakfast was huge. As one of my fellow commenters pointed out the coffee was not that good, but as a matter of fact I have not drunk any good coffe in Azerbaijan, so that may not be the hotels fault. I would suggest taking tea instead...:)

The pros of the hotel would be its location and originality of decor, the negative thing was the restaurant in the hotel which was really expensive as compared to other places in Baku. So, if you have time in the evening I would suggest you search for an other restaurant.
All in all I had a great time and would be going back to this hotel if I visit Baku again.

My friend and I were backpacking (with hotels) through the Caucasus and stayed in two hotels in Baku. The Atropat was excellent! Globally it's 3.5-4 stars but in Baku I'd say it's 5 stars. The room was a standard size for a European double (two beds). The bathroom was clean and modern, TV was new and had 50 channels. It is located in the old walled city, very close to everything. The staff all spoke English and were VERY helpful. They even wrote out instructions to the ticket saleswoman at the train station for us (we don't speak Azeri). Also, the hotel organized on of the best drivers I've ever had. His name is Faisil (Faisal). Ask for him if you're ever there. The country's tourism industry is almost not exsistent, but he took us to the Fire Temple (Astegah), the wall of fire (Yanar Dagh) and the next day to the Petroglyphs and a mosque.

For the business traveller: we were the only guests there for leisure, everyone else was there for business, it has a very professional atmosphere.
