Temper your expectations that this isn't a 5 star hotel of the four seasons level. But neither is the price and all in all I enjoyed my 2 night stay on business. Good room, great wifi, good location and helpful staff. Breakfast is mediocre but you can't have everything. I'd stay there again quite happily

I really liked this hotel; the rooms are excellent and air conditioned, the staff are extremely helpful, the wireless works and is reasonably fast and the rooftop bar has great views over Baku bay. The Atropat is at the top of the old town, close to the Shirvan Shah palace, but it's a short walk to all the sights.

The hotel is situated in the heart of the walled old city in one of the side streets about 5 mins walk away from the maiden tower. This may be difficult for those who want to use public transport or taxi, luckily a colleague of mine was helping out with driving. I was staying in a standard room, which was quite big, and luckily was decorated with some originality. The service in the hotel was good, the staff was very kind and attentive, but they were not professionals and were not trained by one of the great hotel chains. This was not a problem at all by the way, it made the hotel more charming in fact. I would say that I have stayed in better four star hotels, but those were more expensive as well, so the price/quality is ok in a sense. Wi-fi and breakfast was included in the price, and breakfast was huge. As one of my fellow commenters pointed out the coffee was not that good, but as a matter of fact I have not drunk any good coffe in Azerbaijan, so that may not be the hotels fault. I would suggest taking tea instead...:)

The pros of the hotel would be its location and originality of decor, the negative thing was the restaurant in the hotel which was really expensive as compared to other places in Baku. So, if you have time in the evening I would suggest you search for an other restaurant.
All in all I had a great time and would be going back to this hotel if I visit Baku again.

My friend and I were backpacking (with hotels) through the Caucasus and stayed in two hotels in Baku. The Atropat was excellent! Globally it's 3.5-4 stars but in Baku I'd say it's 5 stars. The room was a standard size for a European double (two beds). The bathroom was clean and modern, TV was new and had 50 channels. It is located in the old walled city, very close to everything. The staff all spoke English and were VERY helpful. They even wrote out instructions to the ticket saleswoman at the train station for us (we don't speak Azeri). Also, the hotel organized on of the best drivers I've ever had. His name is Faisil (Faisal). Ask for him if you're ever there. The country's tourism industry is almost not exsistent, but he took us to the Fire Temple (Astegah), the wall of fire (Yanar Dagh) and the next day to the Petroglyphs and a mosque.

For the business traveller: we were the only guests there for leisure, everyone else was there for business, it has a very professional atmosphere.

I had hard time preparing a group business trip to Baku this year and thanks to a coincidence I found this hotel. Right from the booking their approach towards me as a client was extremely good and I was just hoping that everything would be really as good as it was promised. I had never been to Azerbaijan before and I had bad experience with hotels in other countries of the former USSR.
However, the hotel manager fulfilled everything he promised. He and his staff were extremely helpful throughout the whole stay. The client service was the kind that you would expect in a high quality hotel in Asia. The hotel and the standard rooms look exactly as depicted at the hotel website and it looks brand new.
It is "locked" inside the old town of Baku, so you have to insist that the taxi driver takes you right to the hotel as access for cars is limited to the old town. The view from the hotel rooms is far from spectacular as you see the real old town, which is yet to be renovated...But who goes to Baku to stay in a hotel room?
Breakfast was standard and the staff tried to satisfy all our wishes in case we wanted something else than they offered. They even have a open terrace restaurant used also for breakfasts. The rooms were very comfortable, with all the amenities you expect to see in a 4-5* hotel. The airconditioning was excellent as well as the high speed wifi included in the price. The hotel also offered us their own transport on very convenient terms.

The only things they should improve would be:
- better coffee in the morning. The instant coffee was dreadful
- lobby the Baku authorities to speed up the renovation of the surrounding area

On the whole, I would probably be happier if the hotel was located outside of the old town as that makes it more complicated especialy if you have a larger grop but it gives your stay a unique charm.
