My wife and I spent 3 nights at the Mia Resort Nha Trang to celebrate our wedding anniversary, chosen in part due to the many positive reviews on Tripadvisor. The resort itself is nice, the beach clean and attractive as compared to the Nha Trang beach or indeed most of the small offshore islands near Nha Trang.
However, it is by no means a 5 star resort. Having lived in SE Asia for 25 years and having spent dozens of holidays at the best resorts in Thailand Malaysia Indonesia, Maldives and pretty much everywhere else in between, this resort disappointed in a number of ways, and is in our view at best a 4 star property with 3.5 star service.
The issues we had are as follows. A) We booked the most expensive beachfront pool villa (room 301) and although it was quite nice, the bed sheets went un-changed for the duration of our stay and towels were changed only once, even though we dumped them on the floor so as not to give them the impression we were greenies. Not ideal for a romantic trip! B) The maintenance and gardening staff are at best what one can describe as peeping toms, and did their best to eyeball my wife on numerous occasions over the entire stay. Luckily she isn’t the shy type, but it annoyed me no end to catch the buggers sneaking about trying to see her by what is a very private little pool and outdoors sofa / sunbathing garden. They were not trained well, not friendly, and if it were in my home country of Thailand they would have been on the end of a savage beating.
c) The food ranged from truly excellent to poor. For some reason the beef dishes at this resort are amazing, the best we’ve had in Vietnam, but the seafood, and some other Asian style dishes (hotpot comes to mind) were verging on terrible, and far from fresh. Maybe we were unlucky, but as we ate all meals at the resort, by the final day we were somewhat disappointed with the overall dining experience, especially because we had read so many rave reviews of the cuisine. D) We informed the resort (we booked directly) that it was an anniversary trip. Obviously this slipped through the cracks. Not that we really cared, it just seemed a tad below par to ignore such things.
On the plus side the beach is great, the room was nice but small, but not 5 star by SE Asian standards, and a little pricey. The restaurant staff were quite good but hardly what you could call excellent, and the resort itself, whilst clean and well kept lacked colour, as if the absence of flowers and interesting plants was intentional.
We have spent several vacations over the past several years at other supposed 5 star resorts in Nha Trang, Danang, Mui Ne and Phi Quoc, and what is now clear to us is that Vietnam resorts in general lacks the charm and attention to detail that one expects at 5 star establishments. I put it down to poor or mediocre staff training, inexperienced and greedy management and without wanting to seem too harsh, a bad attitude to western/Asian mixed couples. Thailand, Bali and even Malaysia simply do it better.
Mia Resort Nha Trang has potential like many other supposed 4-5 star resorts in Vietnam. I hope this review helps them wake up in some small way, because from what I can see most are struggling to get business and are very rarely full, even in high season.
We did enjoy our stay, but only because we didn’t want anything or anyone to spoil the occasion.
