“Windy forest villa for Christmas!”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

We arrived at the An Lam late on the 22nd December. Whilst we were expecting a boat journey we were stunned by the small boat that set out with us on a very rough sea into pitch darkness with no real explanation of what was happening as very little English was spoken. The weather for the 5 days we were there continued to be extremely windy which prevented a lot of the possible activities - romantic beachside dinners, barbecues, sunset boat trips etc. Without all this the resort becomes quite limited. The villa was lovely although very much amongst the trees which lashed about in the stormy weather. The staff were mostly charming and our butler very helpful checking up regularly that we had everything we needed and dropping by plates of fruit etc. The Vietnamese food was quite bland and the European food really not very good. Having visited the local food market it was frustrating to see the wonderful breadth of amazing quality ingredients that we did not see coming from the resort kitchen!
However it is a lovely tranquil place and for this reason to be recommended as an escape as part of a trip to Vietnam. Probably better to travel later in January when the weather improves as the resort relies on this,

Room Tip: Choose a room with a proper sea view and not up in the trees as our room 31 was quite dark. Also as...

Thank you for your comment, yes indeed we have a "windy season" in the aria of NT. Due to our setting and location in the Bay we are usually well protected and also the fisher boats form the other side take shelter with us.

Same location as Six Senses Evason Hideaway but much better value. Best eco location in Nha Trang area. Natural with a huge capital "N". The view coasting into the resort is sensational and the villas are nestled in amongst the rainforest and waterfalls. The beach is awesome and water clean. The villas are spacious and well apointed with the comforts of home and real natural interiors.Nothing is fake or manufactured about the resort. The staff are genuinely friendly & warm hearted. The resort is apparently operated by a professional group from Singapore who own several exclusive resorts and they obviously really know the hospitality industry very well.

Room Tip: Beach front great

Location: 9/10. Warm, clean beach even in winter. Underfoot surface, however, turns to soft clay about 10m in. Pristine, isolated bay.

Resort amenities: 10/10.

Villa: 10/10. Large, 5-star beach villa with oversized plunge pool and privacy. Refreshing to see no locks

Service: 10/10. Outstanding - we felt like VIPs from the first airport welcome to the final airport farewell.

Food: 10/10. High quality and immaculate hygiene.

Special mention to our butler Phu who was excellent.

My wife and I had the best honeymoon time ever in An Lam Ninh Van Bay. Almost everything is beyond our expectation:
- Villa: we were in villa 33 (my life seems to be attached to number 3 a lot, lol) which was a hill/rock villa. When the butler introduced the villa to us, we were really overwhelmed by its structure. It was located behind high trees and high bushes with its own entrance so it was very private. There were one small pool outside the house with devastating blue water (through the disadvantage is that the water will always be cold, for my wife at least). Then you had a separate open bathroom and a living room downstairs and one bedroom upstairs. It was like heaven for a newly wed couple like us. When we got into the house, they already prepared the bath and with flowers and bubbles, which was very sweet. The villa made us feel like we can mingle with nature right then and there. There was a small problem with the electricity though but the butler helped fix it so everything's fine.
- Butler: Our butler is Truc. We love him. He always smiled and was very thoughtful and considerate. He respected our privacy yet found ways to arrange some activities for us to entertain like to go trekking to the waterfall or go sightseeing throughout the place. We were absolutely satisfied with our butler.
- Bar/Restaurant: Breakfasts and lunches satisfied our taste buds (and our stomach too!). So many dishes to choose from the menu and every dish was presented beautifully. At the fire bar, you can get many delicious cocktails and mocktails with reasonable price (especially if you come at happy hour, you will get a really good price). The only regret we had was that we didn't have the chance to enjoy dinner at the restaurant. The first day we came to the villa late, ate lunch late and were so full to eat another meal in the evening, and the next day we were so tired from the trekking that we slept from noon till night, hence no dinner again. We will definitely have dinner at the restaurant next time we come back because both of us loved the sea view and the food there.
Well, as you see, almost everything made us happy there. I say 'almost' because in my opinion, there are things they can do better:
- Room service: the last morning we stayed at ALNVB, after we had breakfast, went around the place and came back, we saw that our villa had not been cleaned yet. Maybe the people at ALNVB thought that they would clean it after we left for their convenience, I don't know but it would be nicer if they could just tidy up the bed and the mosquito net around it as my wife and I had a hard time ourselves to find our stuff in and around the bed in order to pack our bags. We've been to other places, such as the Mango Bay Resort in Phu Quoc and the people there still cleaned up our room in our last morning. So maybe ALNVB could do the same.
- The car trip to the airport: we felt really moved when our butler and some people saw us off and waved us goodbye at the port but we just wished that the guy accompanying us to the airport could have been more considerate. We were at the backseat right behind the driver and the ALNVB employee. My wife got car sick really bad and vomited but the employee didn't even turn around to ask if we were ok, let alone offering sickness bag or water or napkin or anything ( I say that because they had all of these things when they welcomed us from the airport 3 days before. I guess they did not have this because they think they had offered us water at the port and that's enough). I found it strange that they did not prepare any sickness bag for car sick people when the trip to the airport took more than one hour. Luckily we have a spare sickness bag for cases like that and pulled it out just in time (phew!). And when we got to the airport, I told the employee to wait for me as I have to cross the road to throw away the bag in the trash and didn't want my not-really-aware-of-things-around-yet wife to stay there alone but when I turned around, they were gone, leaving my wife there wandering about having no idea of the luggage. Maybe the employee did not hear what i said, I don't know. I just felt a little bit disappointed as they welcomed us so warmly when we came but did not have such an attitude when we left.

Overall, ALNVB is an unforgettable experience for us. We will definitely come back here soon.

Room Tip: hill side/rock villa is the best

We stayed at An Lam Villas from November 26th till December 6th, and while the weather wasn't the best, we grew to like the hotel and the surroundings quite a lot. Visited Nha Trang a couple of times, took to spa at the hotel, enjoyed the food and did some kayaking.

Everything was great just prior to leaving the hotel. We took our belongings from the villa safe and could not believe that around 1500-1700 $ was missing from the safe.

I immediately explained the situation to Matthew of the hotel management and our butler Binh. We had to leave in 8 hours early next morning and were promised to be contacted after arriving back home. Naturally we couldn't sleep in the awe and disbelief. Such has never happened to us, no matter where we stayed and travelled around the world. Perhaps no one could expect thievery from a hotel like Am Lam.

We were never contacted by either e-mail or phone. Matthew promised to call the police next day and raise the safe logs. Guess this was never done, since when trying to contact Matthew or Antoine by phone, hotel stuff responds they are not available.

This leads us to believe one thing only - the hotel management makes use of corporate malpractice.

While my girlfriend certainly doesn't expect to get a penny back, we would like to warn fellow travelers to stay away from An Lam Ninh Van Bay Villas or otherwise exercise extreme caution.

Greg.

Hedonism rocks! We were picked up from the train station (fee), and were so glad, as the train was late arriving (930pm), and the staff had no problem waiting for us and taking us for the 30 minute ride thru Nha Trang to their "outpost" jetty, for a welcome drink, wet scented towel and greetings. Then we embarked on a 20 minute speed boat ride to the resort. While you may think you are being taken to an island, the reality (if you check google maps) is that it is an isolated peninsula by mountains, with no roads, other than the tracks around the village. There is another resort around the bend, but they don't connect, unless you kayak out. So, very secluded and peaceful.

A few days Prior to arriving, we were sent a survey to determine preferences - for activities, food, alcohol in your villa, and level of service you expect from your butler. Yes, a butler! Our butler greeted us upon arriving at the actual resort, and as we hadn't eaten, and missed dinner, he was thoughtful enough to put out a nice spread of cheeses, meats, breads, fruits and champagne to welcome us to our beautiful villa (no extra cost).

The villas: spread out across the beach, a lagoon and in the trees. The more private ones are 18, 19, 21 and 22, along the lagoon front, with the latter being the furthest and last one. However, small caveat, the gym is very close by, and if someone decides to crank the tunes while they are working out, you can hear the bass drum beat. Our villa was a one bedroom, with living area and separate (huge) bathroom, complete with outdoor shower and outdoor tub (both of which were used extensively). The deck of the villa is also large, and includes lounge chairs, arm chairs with ottomans, a dining table and of course the private personal pool. Lovely views of the lagoon, with a peek a view of the moored boats. Very tranquil and relaxing, which we did a fair bit of during our stay, as the weather was quite stormy and wet. But all good!

Amenities and facilities: nice toiletries provided, including bug juice (the resort sprays once per week, but still a good idea to apply during the evening). A barista machine makes great coffee or lattes, and the kettle is close by with 6 different types of loose leaf tea provided, Complimentary. Staff ensures sufficient (free) water is also stocked in your room, but if you feel so inclined for a little more, then there is a good selection of wine (an entire wine fridge- Australian, New Zealand, S African, Chilean - red, white, rose and bubbly) offered at resort prices. Laundry (fee), a room safe (worked as it should) and excellent wifi in the villa. Bed was very comfortable, and after we switched out our pillows to suit our liking, we slept well. Air con and fan in the bedroom both were very appreciated, but a couple of nights we left the doors totally open to get the breezes (with bug nets down and bug coil burning). One note: due to the construction style of the villas, with thatched roof, we did get some leaking, the first time it happened during a strong storm, we were awoken by the drips splashing through the bug nets. I mentioned it the next day, and the staff were happy to exchange (upgrade) our room, but as I had specifically requested 22, we felt we could live with it (only got one more heavy storm during sleeping hours, minor drips, I just moved closer to hubby!)

Fitness centre: quite well stocked with free weights, cardio equipment (2 treadmills, bikes, ellipticals) and one super cable machine (back, shoulders, chest, legs, biceps and tricep capabilities), plus mats for stretching and air con for comfort.

Gift shop, library, a bar (happy hour buy one get one free), bikes at each villa, walking trails, if you explore the back area you'll find a bunch of feral pigs, an ornery horse (if you don't have food) and a pen with 3 deer (not really sure about the purpose), a fishing hole, and of course a beach, larger pool and lovely dining area. On site spa offered the usual treatments, and was very nice (good hand strength!)

Food: breakfasts were outstanding, a wide variety mixed cuisine buffet every morning (except Friday, when it was a la carte), provided with our package. Lunches and dinners at your cost. I recall the evening buffets were $55 pp, but you could go a la carte there if you liked. We found most of the evening meal buffets (different theme each night) to be quite tasty, offering a lot of fresh seafood cooked in various ways (bbq, soup, stir fry, grill, etc). Butlers provided daily treats in the room, fruit and sweets, so we found a fairly large breakfast, those snacks during the day, and then dinner first thing, satisfied us.

Activities: the day we had planned for a picnic at one of their remote and private villas was a day of downpours, so it was cancelled. We had really wanted to do the Nha Trang market excursion with chef, to be followed by a cooking class, but alas, Chef was on holidays elsewhere...we mentioned this to the GM, who was in house that evening, and knowing how disappointed we were, he made arrangements for us to go into town and be met by one of his tour guide staff (who was off duty) to take us to the wet market, sample some very tasty items (look for the food stall lady with all the pots full of yummy puddings - corn, banana, bean, coconut), head out to the "go to" place for pho (according to the NY times, which I have to say was good, but not outstanding, but then we are spoiled for good pho at home and elsewhere during our 4 week Asia trip). Our guide, Mr Nguyen couldn't have been more gracious, his English was excellent, and he took us where we wanted to go...at no cost (we were more than happy to give him a very generous tip for his time, and happy that he got all of it). The resort has many associated boats of different sizes and speeds, they offer a daily complimentary ride into town at 0830, return 1430, and depending on the boat of the day, it could take you 15 to 60 minutes, but all part of the fun!

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at An Lam, it is pricey, but we felt it was definitely worth it, and got a great amount of quality downtime. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: For more privacy choose the further ones along the lagoon.

The exclusive and relaxing experience already starts with a warm welcome on the mainland and becomes even better as you approach the resort by the speed boat. The villas are built in a breath taking and pristine scenery. Our hill rock villa was stunning and offered all amenities you can think off. The private plunge pool was even bigger than the pictures on the Website suggested and the undisturbed privacy makes it to a perfect spot for honeymoon. The resort offers you a big variety of excursions ranging from adventurous kayaking to a private snorkelling tour. The whole staff at An Lam is just adorable but above all we want to mention Quang our butler, who made our stay the most relaxing but at the same time diversified holiday we ever had. He took care of every aspect of our stay and his aim was, that every day was even better than the one before. It was a big challenge, but Quang exceeds all expectations.
A BIG THANK YOU TO THE WHOLE TEAM OF AN LAM FOR THE MOST PERFECT HONEY MOON!
