Further to Yen's response, we found her restaurant very authentic and the food was exceptional. We had pork spring rolls and seafood hotpot (to share) plus 2 beers and wine - 500k dong (20usd) so not cheapest end but you pay for flavour and quality. Hotpot cooked at table w squid, shrimp, beef and fish. Yum. Deserves rating and in my view pretty authentic (if you can define that!)

Madame/Monsieur,

Thanks for your review of Yen’s Restaurant, our team is always happy when our patrons are satisfied (and want to be back)! We would be absolutely delighted to have you once more with us!

A (long) note, on authenticity, as some reviewers find our food not ‘’Vietnamese Authentic’’. This has been address in one of my previous reply and I feel I need to clarify the word authentic again. I feel compel to do so because you have describe our food ‘’definitively not authentic’’ and we feel that sometimes we lose ‘’points’’ on Tripadvisor.com for the standard ‘’authentic’’ that are not applied to other competitors; for example Indian, Italian or American restaurants. Please, don’t take it personally…we just want the reader of this site to know our point of view.

Here the Oxford definition:

adjective
• Of undisputed origin; genuine:
• made or done in the traditional or original way, or in a way that faithfully resembles an original
http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/authentic?region=us

My Canadian husband (with Vietnamese origin) who takes great interest in my restaurant always scoffs (and usually followed by a long tiring tirade about what is authentic in this interconnected world) at the suggestion that the food at Yên’s Restaurant is not authentic. So it goes like this:

First, what is authentic? For that I would refer to the dictionary definition and what does it mean specifically for the food we serve at Yên’s Restaurant:

First, our food is genuine and of undisputed origin, it would be impossible for anyone to say that we serve Chinese food or Laotian food or Cambodian food, we serve Vietnamese food; period. Our Chef cooks are all Vietnamese, so does our waitress team and I (the owner).
Secondly, all our meals use the basis of Vietnamese food: Nuoc Mam (fish sauce), fresh vegetables, soy sauce and fresh herbs…all from Vietnam and most from Nha Trang. No other kind of cuisine can compare to what we served at our restaurant.

Now, we don’t dispute that the meals that we serve at Yên’s Restaurant are specifically directed for our western customers (our restaurant is in the touristic area) and from the one 1000 of Vietnamese national dishes, we have chosen the ones that would most likely please a neophyte in Vietnamese food. We are certain that serving many of the other national dishes would not appeal to the great majority of our customers. It doesn’t mean that our specialties are not authentically Vietnamese.

Often, in Vietnam, restaurants will serve only one specific specialty, for example the Bun Bo Hue or the snake hot pot or the grilled field rat (to named just a very few)…that business model is impossible at our location and for the goals of reaching a broader western audience.

Other ‘’hazard’’ of Vietnamese food for foreigners is the way ordinary Vietnamese eat their food, example: letting crushed bones in a chicken soups or eat boiled meat with nerves or the use Mam Tom (macerated shrimp of purple color that foreigners think it smell like ‘’death’’); Vietnamese love it; I doubt that most foreigner would…Taste expectation of Vietnamese is very different than the taste of westerners…

We understand that foreigners (and some oversea Vietnamese) have great difficulty with the concept of authenticity but let me give you a simple example:

The phở bò (noodle beef soup that you can find throughout Vietnam) is certainly one of the most known Vietnamese ‘’authentic food’’ but there is not one restaurants or household in Vietnam or in the world that have the same recipe…not one! Who is the guardian of the ‘’original’’ phở bò? No one knows.

You can extrapolate that for all of the 1000 Vietnamese national dishes; everybody has his own recipe but all are authentic Vietnamese specialty…

Does inventing, modifying or improving a Vietnamese dish would necessary mean that it is not authentic. No.

Does it mean that a New-York’s Italian restaurant can’t have authentic spaghetti? No

So, we hope that we have clarified the ‘’authentic’’ case about our food; it's authentic and Vietnamese!

Come visit us, food is good so does our service! The restaurant is a little bit hard to find, but once there we will make sure that you have a good time!

Yen's has atmosphere as soon as you enter. The menu is nicely Laid out, prices are very reasonable. We had the DIY rolls to share - amazing! And so much fun to make. Then we had the chicken fried rice and chicken Noodles. With drinks and all only 265000 dong! A bargain. Staff are lovely, Yen is extremely Helpful - she pointed us in the right direction of buying some rice paper to bring home. A real treat and only a moment from he main street madness. Definitely worth a visit or two!

We visited Yen's after discovering it on trip advisor and we were pleasantly surprised. The menu was relatively small and we settled on a chicken hot pot and a sautéed beef noodle dish. Both were extremely delicious and tasted fresh. The hot pot was rich and flavourful and had a beautiful caramel taste to it. It came with rice and was presented in a clay pot which was a nice touch. The beef was presented beautifully and was by far the best noodle dish we have tasted in the entire of Southeast Asia. It was packed full of flavour and little goodies. The price was extremely reasonable even for us backpackers. The service was spot on and the owner, Yen, even came over to make sure everything was ok. One of, if not the best meals we have had on our travels. I would strongly advise anyone visiting Nha Trang to pay this place a visit. You will not be disappointed.
