“Very affordable beach front hotel in Nha Trang!”
Reviewed January 10, 2013 via mobile

We visited Nha Trang for 3 days as part of our trip through Vietnam these past few weeks. Monaco was the second hotel we stayed in Nha Trang, we switched to this hotel after we read about its beach front views at very affordable rates. The location of this hotel worked out really well for us as its steps away from the beach. The hotel in general is in an older building and the furniture in the rooms a bit older. Bathrooms were clean as were the rooms. The rooms in this hotel are larger than what we were used to in Vietnam. Wifi was available for free, was fast and you could keep a consistent connection. There are also 3 computers available in the lobby for use..one computer terminal may be occupied by a motorbike though :)..I'm sure the staff would move it if need be. The older men at the check in counter gave great service, the younger staff members could be a bit more helpful though. Some of the younger staff members just didn't seem like they wanted to be there which is understandable but unfortunate for hotel guests because it shows. There is no breakfast included at this hotel but I highly recommend you try Thao Nguyen which is a block or two north of this hotel. There are also nearby street vendors who sel banh mi and other Vietnamese food nearby. I also spotted a small store in the alley of this hotel that has snacks, food, etc for sale. An elevator can take you to the 5th floor but you have to go up a set of stairs to access the 6th floor. If you need to take a taxi to the airport ask the hotel manager to make arrangements with the taxi company and pay for the trip through the hotel manager. He will see to it that the taxi driver is paid and doesn't try to rip you off on the fare which is common unfortunately.

I stayed at the Monaco Hotel from August 19 - August 25. The hotel is located one block from the beach and I stayed in Room 601, which is located on the top floor and has a balcony facing the beach (NOTE: the foundation for a new hotel that would partially block the beach view has been dug - but it does not look as if any construction has been done for a long time). I paid 400k VND/night (about $20 USD) for the room. The elevator goes up to the 5th floor, and you take one flight of stairs to the 6th floor. Its a great room! I have found in many cases its cheaper to just to call a hotel directly (or use their website)and reserve a room rather than use Agoda or some booking site.

Like every other hotel I've stayed at in Vietnam, expect to leave your passport at the front desk until you check out. This bothered me at first, but you really don't need your passport for anything, and its a safe place to keep it! There is no safe in the room, but you can leave any valuables at the front desk if you want to. I left my laptop, camera, iPad, etc. in the room and I did not have any problems. You are expected to leave your key at the front desk when you leave the hotel, and pick it up when you return. This is also standard procedure at small hotels in Vietnam. They turn off the electricity to your room while you are gone to save energy, and turn it back on when you return.

The exchange rate at the hotel was only 20k VND to the US dollar - you can do better at the bank or any Western Union shop - about 20,800 - 21,000. But we're only talking about a few dollars difference anyway.

The room was clean and spacious with one queen-size bed. There is a refrigerator with reasonably priced beverages (beer/soft drinks/water). Housekeeping came each day and did a great job. The bathroom does not have a separate shower/bathtub but does have a shower curtain and the water stays in that area - not all over the floor. There is a nice rainfall shower-head and plenty of hot water, but the water pressure is a little weak on the top floor. Bring your own soap and shampoo.

Just outside the hotel entrance there is a place to rent motorbikes (about 100k VND/day) and to the right is a great place for cafe sua da in the mornings. The hotel is located very close to the night market - and although the night market is not that great for shopping, there are a couple of places to get good cheap food.

The only negative I have about this hotel is that they lock the doors at 11:00 pm. if you come back later than that, you just ring the bell (use the side door bell - the front door bell does not work) and they will open the door for you with no problem. Still, I don't like thinking that I am waking someone up if I come back from the Sailing Club (10 minute walk away) at 2:30 a.m!

The employees are friendly and Mr. Trung (the owner) speaks good English. Some of the other staff don't speak much English, but I never had a problem communicating. Besides, this is Vietnam, and I don't expect people to speak English when I don't speak Vietnamese! Everyone was very honest and professional.

I will stay here again when I visit Nha Trang, and I encourage you to check it out when you visit.

Room Tip: Get an ocean-view balcony - its worth it!

We stayed here 2 nights and it is a comfortable place. Thong (the owner) is great. He told us about day trips, where to rent bikes, and other important info. We got 2 rooms, and they both had an amazing view of the ocean and the sunrise (if you are up at 5:30 am). Monaco Hotel is on a side street, so there is honking, but not as much as on the main street. The rooms are good sizes, the top floors 4,5,6 (half of them) have small balconies if you want to sit and watch the action on the beach. Our room has a refrigerator and AC that works. It also has an elevator, and you can leave your bags at the front desk. It was $20 USD for 1 room for 1 night.
