“Deceiving Experience...”
Reviewed October 26, 2008

I tend to be suspicious of hotels that dont show the types of rooms they offer with pictures & descriptions. Generally they are deceiving, and this wasnt any different. Superior room: dark, no views, old furniture, bathroom totally outdated, and when one took a shower, the water leaked & the whole floor was fooded.
All in all I would not recommend this hotel, it was the worst of our honeymoom, and I even thought of moving to another hotel.

BEWARE OF:
* I tried the Spa and found worn out bathrobes (literally with holes) & no amenities in the changing room.
* location is far from convenient, no restaurants around make taxi a must.
* mosquitoes in the swimming pool due to proximity with the river
* The hotel restaurant. Noisy self service buffet goes on all night, with no separate area for a la carte ordering, which doesnt help to get the ambiance right for a nice relaxing dinner, specially since the restaurant is cold & dark.

DO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF;
* The hotel looks fantastic from the outside, it is true, and the pool is beautiful (and full of mosquitoes due to the river proximity).
* the front desk service is more than helpful (you can rent a motorcicle of one of the front desk ladies for 20 dollars the whole day, or they will reserve for you at the wonderful Y Thao Garden.
* Dont miss the Tropical Garden Restaurant in town.
* Fantastic internet service - 8 computers permanently available complimentary.

What a great find! I was a bit sceptical about the price (I paid USD166 per night compared to about 66 elswhere in Vietnam). But it is an art deco oasis - and a tranquil delight in the middle of a crazily noisy country.
The staff were immaculately trained, the hotel spotless, the spa very professional. I couldn't really fault it at all (except perhaps that the pool was closed for maintenance).
If you're travelling around Vietnam in budget hotels, as I was, take time out to treat yourself in Hue - even if just for a couple of nights.

  • Liked — Beautiful art deco building and detailing. Very tranquil.
  • Disliked — Bit further from the main drag than the other major hotels.

This place is such an oasis of style and service. A place fitted out almost entirely to suit its art deco heritage could so easily have fallen into the tacky theme hotel hell but this has been done with loving care and attention to detail. It really did feel like stepping into a Hercule Poirot novel in a good way.

The rooms and suites are beautifully fitted out. Our Colonial River View Suite was stunning with a massive roof terrace with views over the Perfume River to the Citadel.

The staff were all friendy, attentive and spoke good English, which was not the case in other locations in Vietnam.

I heartily agree with those who have said this is one of the best places to stay in Vietnam and would go so far as to say it was probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in. To stay in this hotel again would make any trip to South East Asia worthwhile.

  • Liked — Wonderful quality of fittings and accomodation. Real feeling of luxury.
  • Disliked — Nothing

Absolutely loved my 2 night stay here. It is such a grand art deco colonial building & is a holiday within a holiday. It is quite a large complex so it was easy to relax with friends peacefully. I enjoyed swimming in the pool, having a drink in the bar, playing pool at the pool table. The breakfast buffet was very good. The service was excellent. They had taxis on standby & an ATM machine is next door. The post office is just down the road. You will need to catch a taxi to the town centre but I didn't care as I was completely smitten with this place. The only criticism I have is that the Tour Desk Operator was a little 'brusque' & upset me however the lovely staff did their best to appease me. The laundry is done with much TLC. I had a fantastic time here & hope to return one day. Highly recommended & worth the extra $!

Of all the hotels at which I have stayed La Residence is the one which evokes the fondest memories. The building and grounds are beautiful. The interior is fresh, but maintains its colonial romance. The breakfast was elaborate and I found the staff to be exceptionally friendly. I would return to Hue solely to stay at this hotel: It was superb!

After the sheer frenzy, noise and pace of Hanoi, Hue came as a peaceful contrast.
Set out in Art Deco style, the hotel has a fascinating history - but on our first night after an exhausting journey from a heatwave beset Hanoi, we were just interested in crashing out in civilised surroundings and weren't disappointed.
We (my huband, self and two teenage children) had two beautiful interconnecting rooms- each with their own seperate sitting area and balcony overlooking the river. Bathrooms were on the small side but were overflowing with great complimentary toiletries.
On our first night, having arrived late, we tried the room service menu which was delicious and was delivered quickly and efficiently.
On the second night after a wonderful day exploring the Citadel and tombs and sailing down the Perfume River, we walked into town (takes about 15 minutes) although taxis are cheap and readily available.
Our only possible gripe with this hotel was the pool area where there was a shortage of sun beds in the peak late afternoon period and where the quality of the water didn't appear quite as pristine as in the other hotel pools on our trip.
Overall however, its a lovely hotel - beautifully designed rooms, free internet access, a well equipped gym and super staff. A real gem. I only wish we could have stayed longer.

  • Liked — Luxurious yet characterful rooms

This is definitely the best hotel I've ever stayed in. The room (in the old part of the hotel) was extremely atmospheric, very comfortable and absolutely spotless.

The public areas have been sympathetically restored and it is hard to tell the original parts of the building from those that are new.

Service is friendly and efficient - nothing is too much trouble. The swimming pool overlooks the Perfume River and is salt water.

One word of warning - 'Vegetarian' includes seafood on the menu. You have been warned.
