Owner description: Possibly Hue’s most recognizable landmark, this pagoda contains numerous living and working buildings for its resident monks, a bell tower and a seven-tiered monument in front.

Thien Mu (Celestial Lady) Pagoda. Situated on a low hill, the stairs are a bit steep.the pagoda itself has seven stories but it is not opened for tourists (too old).Inside the entrance gate there are some wooden statues of the guardians of the pagoda and near the shrine where Buddah is worshped there is a huge bronze bell. From the hill one can take good pictures of the surrounding landscape.

We traveled by scooter to the Pagoda...a fun, light trip. Parking was easy, but walking through the myriad of vendors was a bit unpleasant...I can only say no so many times ;) The Pagoda and its grounds are beautiful and quiet. I was most impressed to see the car of self-immolated Thich Quang Duc, the Buddhist monk who burned himself to death in Saigon on 11June1963 to protest alleged persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government. We then visited his self-immolation site in Saigon, a most reflective spot, which helped me understand the significance of his car and his actions.

One of the most significant places I have ever been to. Meeting the old monk about 10 years ago was a truly enlightening experience. I felt blessed just to be in his presence. It was like meeting the lead character from crouching tiger hidden dragon. Although small he was almighty and I am certain he held more power than anyone I have ever met combined together. He was an enlightened being. The children who dedicate themselves to their monk hood are truly amazing. Chanting all day is nothing out of the ordinary for them. A truly wonderful place. The old car here represents the monk in the 60's who set himself alight in protest of the Catholic Church. He did not even flinch as he burned away. Truly amazing enlightened souls live here.

This is a standards tourist attraction in Hue! You get taken in a "Dragon Boat" and then you visit this site. You do need a guide or at least a good guide book.
It is approx. 3 Km from the Citadel of Hue.
If you want to take good pictures you need to select early mornings or sunset. That way you get good lighting and avoid the hoards of tourists.

The best part of this site is the gardens located behind the pagoda. There are lovely paths among trees and flowers to walk and reflect.
