Restaurant absolutely beautiful. Shame about the massive rats running around outside tho. Food average and under portioned but on a positive you must try the royal tea!, it's is amazing!!!!!!!!. Waiters fine, except main guy whose family probably own the restaurant. He just gave orders and smoked the entire time!

When we saw the restaurant we were excited, having already had excellent food in Hue, finding the Khai Hoan filled us with great promise. The decoration of the restaurant with its abundance of wood in the walls columns and ceiling, spaciousness and high ceilings all helped in providing a great ambiance.
We sat down in great anticipation, which was heightened when the menu arrived, the range of food and drinks on offer was enormous and at relatively good prices (around $3-6 per course). We ordered dishes from the Vietnamese section, and were looking forward especially to the Hot Sour Fish Soup and Minced beef Sour Soup, Grilled Beef Covered in Leaf and the Banh Khoai (special Hue Fried Pancake).
Boy were we disappointed. The soup showed no sign of the Vietnamese "bite" as we expected with sour soup, and in fact both tasted the same, which was odd considering one was fish and the other beef. The Special Hue Fried Pancake was nothing special, but was nice and crispy, and the Grilled beef in leaf was extremely salty, and I mean extremely.
What a shame. What could be a great restaurant was ruined by mediocre food. I have to say the service was top notch, and when the waiter was told about the food I got a slight impression that had heard our comments before.

My wife and I only had 1 night in Hue as part of our extensive stay in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. We stayed in a nearby hotel where we both thought that the restaurant prices were just too high. We had a good old stroll around Hue and then on the way back to the hotel we discovered this rather quaint and ornate restaurant. We read the outside menu board and decided to give it a go.
The restaurant is designed like a temple, the inside decor, seats and tables were all high quality and the place was nipping clean. We had soup for starters followed by traditional Vietnamese food, a few beers and a couple of coffees.
Everything was really good, the service was good with lots of smiles, when we got the bill it only came to the equivalent of £26.... marvellous !
Now your all thinking, " well if we go there we'll give it a go ", but ( there's always a but! ).
On the way out, while walking up the alley to the main road we seen about 3 rats scurrying about. It sounds alarming to us cos we're not used to them, but they are very common out there!

We popped in there for a late lunch, and were had great chicken pho , correctly served with different herbs etc on the side. There was also a good choice of fresh fruit juices.
A few days later we decided to return for dinner. It's a very beautiful, atmospheric place in a traditional Vietnamese building with water features, nicely decorated etc... a shame it was almost empty on both occasions. The reason may be,that it's set back from the street, but it's in a good location opposite the Huong Giang hotel.
At dinner we tried Banh Beo, which was slightly weird, good morning glory with garlic, our staple chicken with chili and lemongrass, which tasted fine, although the chicken was a little hard. The crispy noodles with vegetables were expertly prepared, and simply delicious! Beer was cheap, and service from a couple of young girls smiling and sweet, although a little slow.
There were quite a few interesting items on the menu, some of which you don't see on every menu. Had we stayed longer in Hue, I'm sure we'd have visited again, as too many of the other restaurants are just too touristy.

The architecture and warm woodwork of this place is stunning. Truly feel like you are in ancient Hue. The menu is extensive, with Vietnamese and Europea options. I had Vietnamese crispy yellow noodles with tofu (staff accomodated my request for tofu - otherwise wasn't an option). Tasty. Then, suddenlu, all the staff disappeared after the coffee I ordered came to me cold when I ordered hot. Perhaps go for dinner when there are more staff to help you decide from the vast menu or take care of miscues like cold coffee.
