We went to this place this evening after reading about it in Lonely Planet and happily discovering the restaurant only a few steps from our hotel (Orchid Hotel).
There were 3 tables occupied when we arrived. We were politely shown a table and given the menu which was quite extensive and looked really good. The prices were very low compared to what we are used to.
After placing our order, we realised that none of the other tables had gotten their food. Finally they were served. The dishes came out one at a time. During this time, the restaurant filled up and many people were turned away. After an interminable wait, one of our fish orders came, then after another wait, the fried chicken came. Then nothing else came and we asked at least twice about the two missing dishes but the Japanese waiter just said 'coming' and never went into the kitchen to check. After the people who came after us were served, we complained again and the waiter went into the kitchen and came out after some time with our tofu dish. We then asked again about my fish. Finally he checked with the other waitress (although he was the one who took the order) and she came to check and it turned out, he only wrote down one order of fish although I put up my hand with two fingers and said clearly 'two'. So another long wait. During this time, one table walked out and of all the people still sitting in the restaurant (15 people), two got their orders.
This place has good intentions but I don't know if they were having a bad day or not. There were two people in the kitchen and two outside, waiting tables. I noticed that when people went and asked for the bill, they stood for a very long time in front of the counter. The waitress would write every item out again by hand and calculate the total (and she still got it wrong for some).
They will really need to beef up their act. I would have had some of the disadvantaged kids just clear the tables, do the serving of drinks and dish out rice and soup into bowls (how hard can that be) if they are not yet well-trained.
The other thing I did not like was that we were harrassed at our tables by vendors of all possible things. At least 6 or more came in and we had to say 'no' several times. They were really persistent.
Food was ok - some things good, some ok but for this kind of wait, I'd rather go somewhere else.
