“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2013

We only stayed for one night here. It had a great location as the night bus dropped us off at the hostel. The dorms were clean and safe. There isn't lots of bathroom facilities but it was good enough. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The restaurant was nice. There is free wifi and computers to use. Would stay again.

I enjoyed my stay at Hue Backpackers, the rooms were large (I think mine slept 14) which isn't the best when there's only one toilet and one shower, but it was OK. The beds were comfortable, and clean, and the under bed storage lockers were great for storing luggage and valuables in.
The bar downstairs was always lively, with offers on food and drink everyday. The food was very good, and the free breakfast was great. The hostel staff were a mix of Vietnamese and backpackers which was good, and the backpacker workers would get games and nights out organised which I hadn't come across previously in Vietnam. A great way of meeting people, and having some fun, in what would probably have been quite a dull place otherwise.
The hostel was on a street with plenty of restaurants and bars, but it was very quiet, and quite a distance from the Imperial City, which was on the other side of the river.
Great value for money!

This is a decent backpackers, that is quite similar to the other two in its chain in Hanoi. The staff are friendly and very efficient. They were really good with providing allergy-free alternative food for the included breakfast. We went on their Top Gear motorbike tour, which was excellent. Our luggage was sent ahead of us to Hoi An, and we had a guide who took us to a number of places along the way to Hoi An. A waterfall where we could swim, places to eat and drink, good viewspots and a beach near the end. Make sure you bring cash as food and drinks are not included in the cost, and you'll have to pay a tiny amount to park your motorbike at the waterfall. Really well organised, the guide was great. Before you go on this tour make sure you have at least ridden around Hue the day before so you get used to the bikes. The roads aren't terribly busy for most of the journey but you do have a couple of towns to ride through and it's useful to get used to the (lack of) driving rules there.

Note! As a popular backpackers' hostel, you are advice to book this place online in advance or you will be disappointed and have to stay in another place. Good luck to people who walks in.

First thing first, the staffs - they all are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and always put smile on their face no matter how busy there were. They always answered my question (about where to go, what to eat, etc) and also suggested things that I should do during my 3nights stay there. And never ever once any of them forcing me to just eat at the hostel's bar/cafe or book tour from them. Thumbs up on this.

Location wise - I guess it was alright. It is not a typical backpackers' haunt ala Khao San Road in Bangkok or Pub Street in Siem Reap but it still good enough as still lots of other backpackers in nearby hotels/guesthouses and it is pretty near to the attractions like Citadel, Night Market, Dragon Boat, etc and also other bars/restaurants/cafe/shops.

Room - For USD$7.50 per night in 6-beds dormitory it was pretty clean, I must say. The bunk bed is good and the storage under the bed is huge enough to put my entire bagpack(s) in together with other stuffs. The mattress is good, as well as the pillow. Personal power socket and reading lamp and shelve is very "helpful" too. The only 2 things I didn't really like about the room are 1st - the main light. When switch it on at night to find something in the storage bunk, forget about it... It was too dim; 2nd - the curtain is so thin, and light in color so when the sun rise at 5.30, the brightness from outside came in straight into the room kindda forced me to get up although I am so sleepy. Not sure how other dorm mates able to sleep through tho. LOL!

Bathroom/toilet - Narrow, small but everything works. It was clean and the hot shower was good. Big mirror in there too. And remember, do NOT do any laundry inside the sink!

Common area/Cafe/Bar - the common area cum cafe/bar is a good place to socialize with other backpackers. The tables/chairs made from bamboo kindda give me that "local" feelings. It is quite spacious but it could turn really cramp during busy hours when people wanna check-in or check-out or just merely waiting for their bus to next destination. Anyway, I think the price of the f&b at the cafe/bar is a little bit too pricey compare to restaurants/cafes nearby which some of those are way much nicer. 25,000VND for a local beer? Seriously? I rather walk a bit for 15,000VND beer, buy 3 free 1. Hahaha!

Free Breakfast - which included with the price I paid for the room - was pretty simple. Only 2 options. Either eggs-of-your-choice with baguette (no lettuce, no tomato, no cheese... leave alone bacon :P ) OR 2 pieces of fluffy banana pancakes. Help yourself for free coffee/tea/water. Take as many green-but-ripped bananas on top of their counter if you still hungry. LOL!

Service - I only use the laundrette service - well, pretty expensive if you compare to hostels in HCMC or Da Lat or Nha Thrang or Hoi An which normally offer the service between range of 10,000VND to 15,000VND per kilo. They charged 25,000VND per kilo and expect nothing cheaper if you go outside from the hostel. They normal laundry place nearby charge at 30,000VND per kilo! So yeah, so I just sent my laundry to the hostel at night and got it nice, clean, smelled good and folded nicely the next day afternoon.

P/S: Pssst! If you want to get a traditional Banh Beo - delicious and at local price - from the hostel, turn to the left to the main road, then turn to the left, walk about 50m and you will see "Banh Beo/Khay/Nam/Dio/Loc/Ram It" on little signboard place on the walkway right at the alley entrance. Enter that alley and the local Banh Beo cafe is just 20m away on the left, before Oasis cafe. Price per menu range between 12,000VND to 25,000VND maximum. This is suggested by the staffs of Hue Backpackers! And it was awesome! Don't expect fancy ambiance or deco in the shop as its run by old folks who doesn't speak single English. Just point things that you want on the menu on the wall (they only have 5/6 dishes anyway!).

The rooms are nice (big lockers under the beds, plugs and reading lights at all beds, airco), and the bar's cozy (beers are quite expensive though). The bathroom is shared with 10 people, but at the time I was there, it was always clean. tthe partying in the bar usually stopped around 11pm, so for those wanting to go to bed early, that was always possible. The staff were really helpfull and friendly. Not the best hostel I've had, but really nice.

If you want to chill out, this is not the best place to stay. The bar in the hostel has drink specials every night and many of the guest take full advantage of it. I was there for 3 nights and on 2 of those nights I was woken up in the middle of the night.

One night It was so bad that I went up stairs to ask the room above us if they could quiet down at 3 am. When they kept making noise, I tried to go down stairs to ask for help and there was no one to talk to except for a "security" guard who spoke no English and was playing on a computer.

If you are on the party circuit, stay here. Otherwise look someplace else.

having said all that, the staff are friendly and helpful, when they are there. The beds are good and so is the storage. AC was good at night.

Hue Backpackers is not going to set the world alight, but for $6 you don't expect it to. The rooms are clean and decent, the beds are comfortable, the lockers can store everything you need and there's free-wifi and breakfast.

The only downside is that the bathroom tended to get pretty bad after a few uses and the room smelt a bit damp. However, in hostels this can easily be down to the people you're staying with rather than the hostel itself.
