“wonderful mid-sized hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 28, 2008

We stayed at this wonderful hotel last July (2007) and I thought it remiss of me not to include a review as it is such a nice hotel. Sorry for the delay in posting it.

At that time, the May Hotel was brand new, having opened only weeks before- it does have a pool but that wasn't quite ready for use at that time.

We were staying in the Star Hotel next door on Thi Sach Street and I thought I would just walk in and have a look at the rooms.
I felt, from the look of the place that it would be much more expensive, but a look at their price list was a really great surprise as it was not at all expensive and we got a good opening deal.

They showed me all rooms ranging from the standard, to the May Suites and a few days later we spent one night in a deluxe room which was absolutely lovely, and 2 nights in the May Suite.

The Suite is huge with a complete lounge area with a separate tv and airconditioner and the bedroom area has two huge super-comfortable beds with itheir own tv and airconditioner.
A lovely bathroom and gorgeous views completed the package.

buffet breakfast came with the price and it was really good.

The only tiny gripe was you had to pay for internet usage, but, they had very good new equipment, including very good headphones for use with skype or msn instant, and their connection was very fast. I think it was about US$2 an hour, so, really it's not so bad.

There is a really nice lobby to sit in and watch the world pass by and there are absolutely brilliant cafes and bars all around the area just steps away.

I have recommended this hotel to many people since my stay and I think they were all delighted - I know we were.

Even though I also stayed at the Majestic in HCMC on the same trip, and it is a wonderful hotel, I think when I go back to HCMC again, I would most definitely stay at the May.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2008

Our family of four stayed at the May Hotel in January 2008 for 3 nights. We were charged for 4 nights due to a flight cancellation and subsequent overnight bus ride but that’s another story.
Very nice hotel with very grand rooms and grand furniture. Had some miscommunication problems with the staff, firstly over being charged for our no show for the first night, then with regards to our check out date, and the pool. There isn’t one – well not yet anyway. The website, the brochure and the in-room literature all promote the pool but it’s not finished yet. Our family trotted out to the elevators all decked out in their swimmers to be told by housekeeping “No! No!” and she then called Reception for us. It was explained rather briskly that the pool might be finished next holidays. While this wasn’t a huge drama it was a disappointment for hot and tired kids. We had picked this hotel, and paid a lot more than we had planned, on the basis of it having a pool. The ladies at reception very kindly sent up a fruit platter for the inconvenience of the pool issue. Kids enjoyed that.

The doormen were happy and helpful people. They made us feel very welcome.
Internet access was $1US per hour and whilst this wasn’t expensive, you were disinclined to just check your messages a few times a day as we had been able to at other hotels.

Complimentary iced tea was brought to us as we sat in the foyer which was a nice touch.

Our room was a 12th floor May Suite at $156US per night. Two king size, chunky four poster beds in one area with television and fridge and then a sitting area with a lounge, 2 chairs, coffee table and another television and fridge. 2 air conditioning units. Also a wall unit/display cabinet sort of thing with bar stools. Bathroom was good – light colours. The lounge chairs were big, unusually proportioned and uncomfortable. We found it easier to sit sideways with our legs dangling over. Most effective.

Great views. Good air conditioning. Great television. Instead of a swim we let the kids relax with the air con and Cartoon network while we did a little exploring.

Location was good. Close to Dong Khoi Street and plenty of eating places and snack food shops in the other direction. Laundry was expensive here but there didn’t seem to be as many options on the street to get washing done.

Breakfast was great. Do it yourself pho with bowls of rice noodle and meat – just add your own sprouts, fresh herbs, chilli and simmering stock. Plenty of the usual suspects as well – fried rice, toast, curries, fried things, bacon, eggs, tea, coffee, juice, cake, fruit and yoghurt. And a good cup of tea, according to my husband. Big screen TV in the breakfast room on a news channel in English to keep you up to date with the rest of the world, friendly wait staff and really clean toilets.

I think if we had just wanted to live it up without a pool we would have been thrilled with this place, but having to pay for an extra night and missing out on a swim made it seem expensive.
