“Who needs a stair stepper?!”

We found Madame Cuc in the DK guide to Vietnam and decided to give it a try for our last couple of nights in Saigon. It is a sweet place! The staff is friendly and helpful and were some of the few people we encountered in Vietnam who spoke English, which would have been helpful if we didn't speak Vietnamese.

As other reviewers note, it is a LONG climb to your room. We were in room 402, which was actually up 5 flights. We had tons of bags, so the hotel employed a winch and cable to get our luggage upstairs. We, however, walked after depositing our shoes on a rack at the bottom of the stairs as requested.

The room was very tidy and functional. We had AC that worked and a balcony overlooking the very busy street. There were two double beds, a desk and a wardrobe cabinet. My kids liked that the cable tv worked, so after a long day we could watch Animal Planet.

The bathroom was ok. It had the usual shower/toilet/sink all in one room arrangement. I think something was leaking because the floor was wet constantly, which was unpleasant. But there was good water pressure and plenty of hot water.

Throughout the hotel there are stunning photographs that were taken by Mr. Cuc. It was much better than the usual hotel art one finds.

Breakfast is free and simple, with great Vietnamese coffee, french bread and jam. There were bananas in the lobby all afternoon and tons of street vendors at the market across the street if you want to grab a quick bite.

For me, the only real downside was that it was in an incredibly busy part of the city. Getting around, even on foot, was quite a challenge, especially during rush hour. And even in a cab during the non-rush times, it took forever to get anywhere. Also, this is definitely a back-packer kind of place, so it was mostly western or Japanese tourists. Up to this point, we had stayed in places frequented by Vietnamese tourists and preferred that.

We enjoyed our stay at Madame Cuc's, even with the steep stairs!

We stayed at #184. The room was safe and clean, and all of the amenities were functional. A definite highlight of the hotel was the service, including the awesome travel and reservation assistance from the staff. There are many, many stairs, and an interesting contraption to port your luggage up them. Amongst the refreshments served are great coffee and lemonade. A cute little dog, who eats chicken off of its owner's chop sticks, resides on-site.

We were ok with this choice, location is good in the heart of the backpacker district. There is a massive staircase and no elevator, thought they have a system of helping your luggage up to the 4th floor.
Rooms are small but clean, breakfast is simple, bread and jam. They offer simple dinners as well.
Strange experience was, that there are about 5-6 girls of Madam Cuc at the reception all the time but not really clear who is doing what...they are not too pushy about the tours but if you don't take their offer, you don't really exist for them any more. This was actually a positive point for us.

Madame Cuc's chain of hotels are listed in Lonely Planet, and rightfully so. They are a nice bunch (we stayed in #64) with friendly and welcoming staff. Room was clean with air-con, but very basic. Good place for backpackers on a budget.

In Ho Chi Minh City, businesses saved money on taxes by having narrow width buildings and just building upwards. Hence, we were fortunate enough to have what seemed like the penthouse suite, meaning the top floor. Mind you, most guesthouses do not have elevators in vietnam. FUN! I'm glad our room had air-con because not only was it hot outside, but the climb up the turning stairwell to our room 7 stories up was enough exercise for us.

Type room we had: Double with A/C
Number Nights we stayed: 1 (We would've stayed longer if we didn't have the 7 flights of stairs to climb.)

The Good:
- Price of room was reasonable
- Air Con
- Friendly staff, well run guesthouse
- Pulley to get bags up to room floor

The Not-So-Good
- The climb up to the rooms
- Bathroom & shower could be improved
