“Great Spot in the backpacker quarter...”
Reviewed August 17, 2011

This was the first hotel we stayed in on our trip in Vietnam. The service was very professional and friendly, totally helpful too.

The hotel was well located within the backpacker quarter, but not too noisy. We were able to walk to most places, especially in using the walking guide in the Lonely Planet.

The brekky was simple, but tasty and very quick.

The hotel also provides an airport pick up service which can be good when arriving from a long haul flight...we found this good to be greeted this way and being able to avoid the scrabble of taxis for at least the first arrival in this stunning country.

The rooms were basic, but clean. Nothing fancy, but just what we needed, as we were spending most of our time exploring:)

Very nice hotel and breakfast included, laundry service was competed within the same day and it is situated one road away from the hustle and bustle of ho chin Minh.

It is very central but a very basic hotel. Breakfast not worth sitting down to.

My friend and I stayed on the first floor VIP room for 5 nights in early April, 2011.
I find the rates fair for such a big room with lounge area and balconey for US$55/ night.
As my friend has a couple of friends in Saigon, we often have them over for drinks and hang out in the evening.
Our problem is with the front desk man working the evening shift. He would often, quite obviously, demand tip or else, trouble your guest by demanding to keep his/her ID until they leave. He's all smiles and easy-going once he's been tipped.
The design of the bathtub was such that water would inadvertently drip to the bathroom floor if you were to stand and shower, but that shouldn't be a problem if one is not too fussy.
Otherwise, breakfast is mediocre, as other reviews here have said. My friends and I have a habit of sleeping in, and we learnt in our first few days the frontdesk staff have a habit of calling guest at around 10.30am to ask if they'd like b'fast. There was one more thing she was trying to ask when I answered one morning, which I could not make out, and she kept laughing as she repeated her question a few times after which, I got annoyed and decided, and told her we're not having b'fast and hung up. So unplug your phone if u wish to sleep in and do not want to be disturbed.
Pertaining to payment, we've no issues as we had calculated the bill beforehand and prepared the amount in USD, which we paid upfront upon check-in. My friend and I weren't too comfortable with the idea of our passports being in their custody if we were to pay at the end of our stay upon checkout.
All in all, I stayed at Lac Vien without very high expectations, and the hotel did live up to that.

Spent a month in vietnam with family and found the Lac Vien on our final 3 days. Very good standard place for rates charged. Location was a bit noisy (we had the front rooms) on one of the nights but overall fine. Big thumbs up to management and staff as they were always helpful with advice and friendly service. All in all a good value, clean/cool and well located hotel.

We stayed here 3 seperate times within a month. The rooms are on the small side but have every thing you will need.
Reception staff are very helpful and one young guy was very friendly.
Beds are firm- but thats the norm in Vietnam, your first night is always going to be bad till you get used to it!
Le Pub is just across the lane and is a good place for a drink, the place beside it though...beware, its some sort of brothel Im sure.

I stayed in the top floor 'vip' room which was not really worth the expense as the view and facilities don't really justify the extra money. The location though, was terrific. There are plenty of money changers near by with great rates as well as heaps of tour companies. Lac Vien is an easy walk and easier motorbike taxi to most of the Saigon sights - even in the heat. Locally the options for shopping are sensational with the best market in the city near by and the local streets are crammed full of any thing you could want. The hotel breakfast is very frugal but right outside the door are a world of choices as the street is packed full of resturants and bars offering whatever you could ask for. I ate most times for $5 (US) that included a meal and a drink. The hotel will arrange tours but they are only an agent which farms out tours to loacl providers. While very cheap (I went to the Cu Chi Tunnels for $8) they are very much a 'cattle car. experience on big packed buses. The staff is honest, not pushy, helpful and their english is good. Free online desktops are provided in reception but be careful, they are virus ridden and they inflected my USB. The Hotel rooms were loud while facilities are average but they were clean and well managed. I recommend this hotel if you are after a great location and don't really want to rough it in the cheap joints anymore.
