We stayed at the Hotel Continental across the street from the Opera House and was told there was a free concert from the top steps on Sunday mornings.
We took our coffee street side at the HC cafe tables and had a wonderful view of the nine-piece group playing an instrumental Latin concert with guitars, bongos and a variety of other instruments. A large crowd of several hundred people had gathered on the traffic plaza, curbs and the park across the street to enjoy the music while morning traffic continued around the venue. Their rendition of "Hotel California" was the most beautiful I have heard and the musicianship on all selections was awesome. What an interesting setting.
We walked through the smallish interior later and found it lovely though the old, velour-covered, wooden theater seating was cramped by Western standards.
Being centrally located amongst other District 1 sights and free admission to view the interior made this an easy, worthwhile stop on our walking treks. We missed the performance the next evening due to travel but the Sunday morning concert was a great way to enjoy music, mix with the locals and people-watch.
