“A real gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2014 via mobile

I visited Hotel Opera recently with my girlfriend Judy, and this hotel is truly a gem. Be sure to ask for Phil. The hotel is run by Phil and his wife, and they are extremely accommodating. Phil is very personable, goes out of his way to speak to everyone, and knows exactly what to recommend around the city (how to get there, how much it should cost, etc.). Hotel Opera is in a nice area, lots of eating establishments in walking distance, safe area. We stayed in a basic room and upgraded on our last night. Rooms were very clean, up-to-date and very comfortable. Breakfast was included , and done well.
It's a small hotel, so be sure to book in advance. Hotel was almost fully booked all nights, but Phil also re-arranged to accommodate our schedule as we changed itineraries.

At first glance, the hotel looks like an apartment complex. It's small, but the rooms are spacious and few. The staff is accommodating and friendly. The meals provided are delicious 95% of the time.

I had a single Queen (maybe) size bed room. There was a desk counter, vanity mirror, mini fridge, chair, two stools and end table, closet with safe, air conditioner unite, internet (LAN?) cable, TV with satellite, shower room with toilet and sink. The floors are tiled, so dust and hair do accumulate if not cleaned everyday. I was a huge fan of the shower with good water pressure and quick to heat water.

Another person who traveled with me had a suite style room which is bigger. It has a couch and coffee table instead of stools and end table, a larger fridge with separate freezer section, kitchen sink and counter, microwave and an actual desk.

The stay included a complimentary hot breakfast with beverage. There is even a menu, from which you can order any one entree and any one drink. The food is cooked by the woman you probably saw carrying in the bag of fresh some kind of food just before you sat down, or one of the concierge staff.

The staff was very helpful, and exchanged currency for us also. When we had a special food request, they were usually able to get it. They also helped recommend places to eat and shop. They helped with the taxi service also.

They're located near a street with many restaurants, a convenience store, market and only a couple blocks through a park to the nearest modern shopping mall. A beauty salon a few doors down the street was a nice place to get our hair and nails done, and relax with a decent massage.

The only bad things I can say about it is the construction that was happening next door had the sidewalk torn up, and the dog groomer next door seemed to attract other stray dogs. The walls and floors/ceilings are thin, so we could hear the neighbors in their rooms and especially in the hallways.
