Description: Delicious Vietnamese food from Hue and Central Vietnam

Dong Pho served up what was easily one of my favorite meals in recent memory. Delicate rice dumplings, fresh spring rolls, grilled prawn on sugar cane, giant snails with prawn. A lot of classic Vietnamese dishes but many more I'd never seen. Most accompanied by delicious, spicy sauces.

All set in a beautiful courtyard in District 3. Easily my favorite meal in Saigon. Expensive by local standards, I suppose, but I thought it was a steal at $25/person given the quality of the food.

Took a stroll down "Cach Mang Thang Tam", near to where the Reverend Thich Quan Duc self-immolated so long ago, when we came across Dong Pho. While the terrace was very nice with several large sour-sop fruit bearing trees, we sat inside because there were no breeze.
The restaurant is housed in a colonial style structure that is very Indochine. Dong Pho advertised serving authentic Hue & Central Vietnamese Cuisine. It lived up to its claim. We had the typical Hue's "tea size cake" such as banh beo and banh nam. The banh beo were served individually in a stone dish. The banh nam were individually served hot and steamy. The accompanied nuoc mam for each dish was very true to the dish. We also had the Grapefruit Salad with dry squid. It was very different and delicious as well. Next we had Bun Bo Hue. I ordered mine without the pig hock. It was very very good. We ended our meal with the sweet lotus dessert. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The decor was fantastic. We will definitely return.

The decor is discrete and tasteful. Menus are informative and in 'sensible' English and French. It must be one of the rare non-hotel restaurants in Vietnam to charge a service fee (albeit of only 5 percent, which is reasonable, since the waiters are polite but rarely smile). The food is good, but clearly adapted to western (and Japanese!) tastes, with the more powerful favors of Huế cuisine being severely stifled. No wonder every time we've visited this restaurant, virtually all customers were foreigners, or Vietnamese entertaining foreign guests. The local and o'seas Vietnamese connoisseurs know they can find more authentic and satisfying Huế cuisine elsewhere!

Hue food is said to be the best in Vietnam, and this beautiful, romantic restaurant has the best Hue food with a French styling in Ho Chi Minh City. It is not cheap, but we fed 12 people for $125 USD including beer and soft drinks, tax and tip. Superb food and great service, a 15 minute taxi ride from downtown.
