This location is a hub of activity. It’s a popular spot on the tourist trek with the Cathedral front and centre, the General Post Office on the right side. It’s the gateway for the Pasteur street food districts, Diamond Plaza, Vincom Centre, Versace Plaza and many other things.
Its also a very popular area for locals with the cool tree covered park nearby for the hordes of Honda to stop and catch-up for a street coffee or lash out on a cool Haagen Dazs ice cream treat.
If you really want to get a feel for the vibe of the city, this is a great spot. Sitting in the coffee shop on the street corner looking back at the Cathedral will give you a simple perspective watching the waves of locals coming into the city from the outer suburbs. There is usually a regular feature of locals visiting the square for their pre-wedding photos and from time to time, the tourist equivalent like my wife and I catching a cyclo around the Cathedral for our photos and a throng of interested sticky beaks following our movements.
The dynamic is fluid and frantic, and changes as the day progresses. If you hang around or come back as night falls, the area comes alive with illegal street traders, young lovers, and the church pilgrims for their nightly vigil prayers. All until the local traffic police come through and shoo them away in which case it’s amusing to see them scatter into the cool darkness of the night.
