We started at the Caravelle because of our long flight from the USA and we knew we would be tired and stupid and needed services. That we got. Service was good and friendly. Beds were exceptionally comfortable. Only complaint was that at every turn the hotel was trying to either sell us some other package or when we ordered drinks, they would automatically give us the top of the line without asking. Always trying to get that extra $$$. Nothing was free, i.e., internet. So while it was very good, not so warm and friendly.

I've been to Ho Chi Minh City many times and have seen the city go from having very few hotel options to many good ones (and sadly seeing Louis Vuitton shops and chains slowly make their way into the city). The Caravelle was the first true "five star" hotel in the city, and remains a great place to stay, although the newer hotels will inevitably provide a lot of competition.

The low-down. Fantastic location in the centre of town, across the street from the Opera house (Hyatt on other side of the square), very close to Rex/old colonial stuff and Notre Dame cathedral, and right off of Dong Khoi, the main shopping drag in the city. Also a (terrifying - crossing streets is an adventure in Vietnam) walking distance to old US embassy (where the helicopters took off at the end of the Vietnam war).

Rooms are very comfortable, could use a little updating but really good quality nonetheless. Very good buffet on bottom floor restaurant, and one of the best bars to chill at in Saigon Saigon (although inside is loud with the band - fantastic deck and limited amount of "ladies" most of the time). Service for me has always been very good, friendly, and efficient, and meeting/conference facilities first class. Really nothing to complain about about the place.

Pool is also a little haven in city, with good spa and gym, and a great place to relax as well.

I've also stayed at Hyatt acros the road, and have to say it is very good as well, and is more "swish" than the Caravelle, but for me - the Caravelle has a bit more character and I guess I just like the fact that it has been around for awhile... Plus - it is definitely cheaper and better value in my mind.

In short - great place to stay in HCMC

The hotel was ok, though I would not classify it as 5 star. The rooms are small for the price and the bathrooms are certainly not 5 star quality. The bar upstairs has a great view and worth a visit. The spa facilities including sauna, jaccuzzi, Turkish steam room etc were quite good as well and a good way to relax. Pool and gym looked quite good as well.

A true 5 start experience. Friendly and accommodating staff that go the extra for their guests. We would definitely stay there again.

Caravelle is my favorite hotel and it's Executive Lounge is one of the best if not the best executive lounge of hotels in Saigon. It therefore hurts to see service standards falling in the lounge. Trained to greet the guest on arrival, staff after offering coffee or tea for breakfast will hardly check if any one desires a refill. I saw a guest dropping a bread knife on the floor accidentally and a staff looking at him. Guest picked the knife and put it back on the bread table and shockingly staff just ignored cleaning or replacement and moved on as if it was normal. If you linger on after breakfast, don't be surprised if your used cutlery with food bits sticking on it stays with you on the table continuing to remind you of the eggs you had a while back. Rooms in the hotel are nice but the beds are not the best to give good quality of sleep since hotel while maintaining the public areas to the highest quality has pobabaly not changed mattresses since the war ended in 70s.

We have just returned from our fourth stay. The location is easy walking to city sights and shopping. The Staff are not only professional but also friendly, from the door to the room service. The breakfast buffet is superb, great pool and the foot massage not to be missed. The Executive Lounge with its fine French Wines and Buffet most welcoming and yes that's why we keep going back
