Anybody who served in Vietnam during the "American War" and passed through Saigon will remember that the Caravelle was "off-limits" unless you were a diplomat or correspondent. Now it's available for anyone (at a price, or course). But when in Saigon (ok, call it HCMC if you insist) you absolutely must visit the roof-top Saigon-Saigon bar to look down on the city center and imagine the parachute flares swaying in the distant jungle. The Caravelle is first-class in every respect, right down to the packed breakfast if you need to catch an early flight out of Saigon. Hotel manager John Gardner (a personal contact) is a very pleasant Kiwi who contributes staff time and funds to charity. He'll tell you the hotel history if you catch him at the right time.

Room Tip: Ask for the room that was hit by a bomb planted by the VC. That failing, stay on the club floor (wo...

The Caravelle is a basic enough hotel with all the room amenities one would need, and it's centrally located. But compared to most other 5 star international hotels in terms of decor and facilities it barely makes the list. However, what's just as important if not more than amenities, is 5 star service. And as a frequent business traveler and expat working in Saigon, I was appalled at the level of service I received at the Caravelle.

My boyfriend and I checked into the Caravelle late in the evening, and as we went through the checkin process the manager told us our room number, handed us our room cards, showed us the nightly rate, and mentioned that it included breakfast in the morning. The checkin process was efficient. In the morning we headed down to the front desk to ask where the restaurant for breakfast was located. They asked for our room number, and told us breakfast was not included in our room rate ($208 before tax and service charge). We mentioned that we were told it was included, so the staff proceeded to call the night manager to check. She was not able to reach him, so we asked to speak to the current manager. She clearly was not happy about this and went to get her manager further down the checkin desk saying in Vietnamese, "can you deal with this?" (yes, I am fluent in Vietnamese). The manager repeated the same step as her staff, trying to reach the night manager without luck, then proceeded to tell us the exact same thing. We told her that was unacceptable service, to which she responded by offering us 1 free breakfast and we would pay for 1 at $22. We declined and opted to check out. The same staff person came back to check us out, and upon noticing a charge amount besides the room rate and tax on the tablet we were supposed to sign, we asked what it was for. The staff member rolled her eyes, and said "I will print it out". ironically, it was the "service" charge. We checked out, with no sorry's for our unpleasant stay and no thank you's. We went across the square to checkin at the Park Hyatt.

This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. It is a welcoming oasis in a hot and hectic city. The location is excellent, the service is impeccable, and the amenities are all first rate. Particularly outstanding are the breakfasts - the buffet includes every imaginable choice and most days we did not eat again until dinner. The rooftop bar is a fun place with historical significance and while we were there the Cuban group Q-Bans was playing - very good. The pool area is also very nice; a great place to relax in the afternoons. If I ever return to Ho Chi Minh City I would look forward to staying here again.

We stayed here for four nights from the 16th March. The hotel is really great. Our room overlooked the Opera House and was large airy and had everything you needed for a great nights sleep. The bed was so comfortable. Breakfast was wonderful, so much choice.Pool area a little haven of peace after the streets of Ho Chi Min and never crowded.

We ate in the reflections restaurant, they had a special steak week, wow the food and service was the best i have had in a long time, the stafff were exceptional as was the food, it wasnt cheap but by our standards in the UK was great value. The roof top bar was also great and the band who played were great. I would highly reccomend this hotel and would use again

Room Tip: We asked for rooms overlooking the opera house but I am sure all their roms are top notch

Not the newest or shiniest, but one of the most historic hotels in Saigon, redolent of the grace and charm that typifies Viet Nam at its best. We have stayed at the Caravelle twice in the last three years, for a week at a time, and have thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The location is excellent, an easy (if often hot for this westerner) walk or short cab ride to many attractions, including shopping centres, markets, and museums. Rooms are well appointed and comfortable. The pool is much appreciated at the end of a busy day of sightseeing that began with a workout in the excellent gym. The Signature Floor Rooms (the club floors) that include access to the excellent Signature Lounge, its buffet breakfast and evening snacks, are especially recommended for business and long-stay travellers.

Room Tip: consider booking a Signature Floor room, the extra benefits are worth it.

Commanding a great location, this is very central for exploring Saigon.
The service was fantastic in the restaurant and the most wonderful buffet breakfast you will have anywhere. The staff were friendly and helpful with a good command of English.

The price is relatively high.

Caravelle Hotel has an excellent location in downtown HCM City. The hotel is perhaps a bit dated, but still with grace and an air of past and current elegance over it.

I staid at one of the Signature floors which gives you an access to a separate lounge for breakfast, free drinks during the day and evening cocktails, wine and canapés for a few hours early evenings.

The rooms themselves are modern in a way that there is pretty much all modern amenities that you need - the rooms are a bit dated, but giving a more graceful then disturbing feeling over it.

We used the hotels transfer from the airport and were happy to be provided with free wi-fi and
soft drinks, they even had beer and we had one to celebrate our arrival. A nice treat really.

Breakfast was perfectly alright and nothing essential missing. The staff were kind, but a bit daydreaming more then attentive really. Not a big deal though.

I have staid at 3-4 5-star properties in HCM City, but I must say Caravelle has more soul and character then most other´s, it´s hard to define, but you feel it once you are there.

Went to their rooftop bar "Saigon Saigon" a few times, but when I was there the band playing was too loud for any reasonable conversation, so we left. It´s a matter of taste of course, but with some softer music you could actually been more able to speak to your friends and colleagues.

Going back to HCM-city, I would not mind staying here again. Would also recommend a friend.
