We arrived Christmas eve after a seven hour taxi ride from the south.[ Avoid travelling in Ho Chi Minh City on Christmas eve. It's bedlam]. The city centre is decorated beautifully, very festive. There are lots of large Catholic Churches on the outskirts of the city. This surprised me a little. Just my ignorance no doubt.
On arrival at the Duxton we were offered an upgrade to an Executive Suite which was $40 per room per night. If your budget can stretch to that I would highly recommend it purely for the inclusive afternoon tea. Just like an English afternoon tea. A stand full of savouries, cakes and chocolates. A pot of tea to die for, as good as I have tasted. We priced the tea up on Amazon it costs an unbelievable £7.50 for 25 bags. There is wine, beer and spirits [all branded] which are part of the upgrade package.
The upgraded rooms themselves were a bit of a let down. Much smaller than the grand sounding 'Executive Suite' suggests. Makes me wonder about the size of the standard room, but all things considered we were glad we upgraded. The breakfast was lovely, buffet style, help yourself .The food was fresh with lots of choice, coffee and tea refills aplenty.
Location wise the Duxton would be hard to beat. It's central for most of the tourist attractions. Very good restaurants, bars, markets and shopping centres etc. It is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. Designer goods such as Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Burberry etc have an additional charge called a luxury tax, this makes them far more expensive than in Britian.
So to summarise, Ho Chi Minh City is a vibrant, modern city, a must visit. The people are lovely, friendly with a ready smile. The Duxton is quite expensive as you would expect from a four star hotel centrally situated in a major city.
If Ho Chi Minh City and Viet Nam in general are not already on your bucket list I would add them immediately.
