Iconic Saigon Hotel

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jan 23, 2015via mobile
Beautifully restored iconic Saigon Hotel in great location along river. Very busy city streets outside, just watching traffic and scooters from window is entertaining. Charming rooms, appointed with antiques and art. Bed and linens extraordinary. We even saw the red carpet out for the arrival of dignitaries while we were there. Lovely breakfast buffet overlooking city and river. Close walk to opera house and shopping. Very safe as well and staff all spoke excellent English.

My suite was very large , wifi very poor, breakfast average, but stayed 2 nights because of the history, and the tours we had booked. Much work being done, upgrading etc.,
Not very good English, but expected that, it is a poor, and also communist country. They tried their best I feel.

Room tip: Paid for 5 star, but was definitely run down. Friends paid for same, and their room was disgusting! Could not be moved, they were not happy, but, I in my 3 rooms, by myself, was more than happy. No views though!!!!!

We spent 4 nights in a pool side room, hardly any noise to contend with. The hotel itself is nice in a good location, the room was in good condition and housekeeping was good. That's about the highlight of our stay here. For the money we paid, the staff were useless, the breakfasts were ordinary and the wifi was terrible.
The door man only opened the door once for us, every other time we had to open the door ourselves. The front desk staff were difficult to speak to and didn't really understand what we were saying most of the time.
The breakfast options on offer were very average. The noodles were bland, the fish was dry, you needed a chainsaw to cut the bacon and it was hard to eat. The only saving grace was the omelette's, bread rolls and the pastries.
The wifi was very difficult to connect to, we had to constantly stand outside our room to try and connect. It dropped out regularly.
Definitely don't get your washing done here, very expensive just for 1 item.
For such a prestigious hotel with 4.5 stars, I expected a lot better in food and service. We stayed at other hotels in Vietnam that were 3 stars and about a third of the cost which would put this hotel to shame. Would never come back.

As history buffs my SO and I went here for a drink (like so many aussies do) - While it was by far the most expensive place to have a drink; it has an incredible view and was nice to play fancy for an hour and to touch history.

The reason I picked this hotel is because of the old interior that is supposed to transport you in time. The picture gives old and vibrant impression, what I had was old and tired impression.
Upon checking out we encountered so much problems. Being charged more than what we have agreed on is one. Not being able to verified and correct it as the person in charge is on leave is second. Being charged on a beverage that we did not consume in the room is third.
Overall staff experience, concierge plus food and beverage, are much better than front desk.
Front desk team was not able to provide the assistance required for bill correction on our bill, as well as two other customers next to us upon checking out.
My suggestion, if you are enchanted by the interior and history of this hotel, do not charge anything to the room. Pay it up front, as they are not very helpful when it is about correcting your bill.
Will we come back? Absolutely not, there are other classic hotel in Dong Khoi that has better review.

We spent 2 nights and were upgraded to a room overlooking the pool. The hotel has old world charm. It was built in 1920 by the French and has been updated throughout the years. The lobby is beautiful. The staff are welcoming and friendly. The best feature of this hotel is the rooftop patio.
