“Grand Old hotel”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

This is one grand old hotel. It must have been built early 20th - late 19th century and it shows. I love hotels that give you a window on a different time and a different world. Let me repeat, this is an old hotel but it is very well run, clean and extremely charming. It is in the middle of Ho Chi Minh city in a rather upscale street where expensive fashion stores are abundant. The restaurant at the top of the new part of the hotel has a million dollar view both at sunrise and sunset. The buffet dinner there on the weekend is out of this world and worth the price. The service at this restaurant is first class and a little bit generous tip will put a smile of appreciation on the faces of the server team. There are several other good restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. One word of caution, AVOID fresh food in Vietnam, severe stomach upset is sure to follow. The traffic is extremely chaotic and you hold your life in your hand when you cross the streets there, red traffic lights appear to be only for decoration. Having said that, you will thoroughly enjoy the city, the country and most of all the people

Room Tip: Try dinner buffet at the rooftop restaurant around sunset, spectacular

We choose this hotel on the strength of Travel Advisor reviewers, a budget of around AUD 100 per night, location to attractions, restaurants and shopping and a touch of history. It ticked all the boxes. Overall the extensive detail provided by previous reviewers would be our view of this hotel so I will keep this brief.

We purchased a 'deluxe' room (the lead in room rate). We were located in the new wing. The room was quiet even though we were facing a busy road, immaculate, very stylish and well appointed. Quality marble finish in the bathroom with seperate bath and shower. We used the pool a lot and enjoyed returning to it after sightseeing. The photo of the pool was another reason for picking this hotel against others and I was very happy with the outcome. We used the bar of the roof top once and enjoyed its magic but go to the Rex hotel rooftop bar if u want great live music and a touch of history (1970's). We had the seafood buffet one night and I was disappointed but not surprised. Just too tired to leave the hotel. Breakfast was good and in line with other reviewers comments.

As a former travel consultant for 35 years and well used to assessing hotels I felt this hotel delivered on price, quality of service, comfort and location and I would have no hesitation in recommending it

We stayed here in September , having been referred to it by friends. We found it to be a lovely hotel with large, comfortable rooms, friendly, efficient staff and a great location. The breakfast on offer was good and the pool offered a welcome relief from HCMC's heat. The Circle K shop across the road was a great place to stock up on beers and snacks. We thought this hotel more than lived up to our expectations and we would stay there again.

We´ve got a room in the Luxury Wing.
My wife loved the furniture, a the overall ambience.
The staff is OK, the breakfast was good, but the coffee was terrible ( I switched to tea at my second day).
Good location, 5 minutes walk to the Opera or the Post Office (another must see).
The business center was closed, Wi-Fi didn´t work and the only two computers at the lobby were painfully slow, but my overall experience was really good.

We had four nights in Saigon at the Grand Hotel and loved it. We were traveling with three kids, so had to get two rooms (which is pretty standard in Asia). The hotel is beautiful with classical style and charm. The rooms were typical size, very clean and well appointed. We only had breakfasts at the hotel and they were awesome with a huge variety of Asian and western foods. The pool area is located in the centre of the building and provides a lovely and peaceful area to have a swim and a quite drink. The location of the hotel is ideal for being able to walk to many restaurants, shops, market, etc. The staff were extremely polite, friendly and prepared to help in anyway possible.

Lots of chandeliers and marble and very friendly staff.

Apart from the fact that the room was a little cramped (with twin beds and a chair beside the bed it made it a little tight), everything was to our satisfaction.

The a/c worked well and was reasonably quiet, the bed was comfortable (particularly so for an Asian hotel), the bathroom was well laid out with a full bathtub and separate shower recess, and the water was hot.

My small laptop fitted into the in-room safe, and the wi-fi connection worked well (and was free).

The rooftop bar overlooking the Saigon River has a nice ambiance (around AU$10 for a beer and a Bacardi & Coke), but … we found it depended to a large degree on the music group that is playing when you visit – 3 nights, 3 different groups – one was great, the other 2 were ok.

The pool area was small but good, and the buffet breakfast (with egg/omelette station) offered everything we required.

Reasonably centrally located and it would be our first choice should we return to HCMC.

PS – The little mini-market across the road is good if you want to buy small snacks or a few cans of beer/coke etc to drink in your hotel room. Also, the noodle shop “Saigon Corner” just a few doors down from the mini-mart is good for a cheap feed.

We stayed at The Grand Hotel Saigon for 5 nights. My husband and I in one room and the kids in another. The location is in the more up market area of Saigon. There are some nice restaurants around the hotel. The breakfast buffet was good. The pool was quiet. The security was good at the hotel. I couldn't fault it but it is one of the best in Saigon so it should be well above average.
