Grand Hotel definitely exceeded our expectations. If boutique hotel is the term to use about smaller, individual and unique hotels with an intimate atmosphere, I would call Grand Hotel a boutique hotel. The rooms and the bathrooms are decorated with old furniture and everything seems really well kept. Add to that a charming small balcony. Only bad thing to say about the hotel is that the breakfast buffet is a bit depressing, although the selection is okay - in my oppinion it's just really a pity to serve british bacon and egg when you could serve delicious vietnamese dishes. And by the way: If you plan to use the pool and spa treatments a lot (we didn't), you're perhaps better of choosing another hotel. There isn't really any sun at the pool area and it seems a bit claustophobic because there's so little space. The spa treatment area was in my oppinion a bit dirty and 'miserable', and it made me wonder, what other things than back massage went on there, I'm sorry to say. But overall a fantastic experience, if you are traveling with friends or as a couple.

Room Tip: Definitely choose Old wing if possible and a room on one of the top floors.

This is a tale of two hotels in Ho Chi Minh City. We spent the last two weeks of October 2011 in Saigon. It was our first trip to Vietnam. Let me make this simple. This trip didn’t meet my expectations it exceeded them! That includes the hotels. The city is full of history & the youthfulness of these beautiful people made us appreciate this unique culture. [70% were born after 1974.] I ended up splitting between the Grand & the Rex because I couldn’t get the 15 days consecutive. Thought that was foolish at first, now I’m happy to have experienced both hotels.
The first 6 nights of our trip we stayed in the Grand Hotel. We reserved a suite in the old section & enjoyed the staff & services. The morning breakfast never ceased to amaze me. Pho in the morning! I’m still trying to overcome the jolt from the morning coffee. God I thought Starbucks over roasted. Like most Americans, we found the Gloria Jean’s four block west of the hotel. I should mention that the hotel is about to complete a massive expansion. It will be interesting how the remolded new section will rate. So for history sake; book the old section just for the turn of the century charm. At any given moment we were transported back to the 1920’s. I would recommend this hotel. If your spouse likes to shop avoid this area. There are too many good and interesting shops. We both had shorts & shirts custom tailored.
The next 9 nights of our trip were spent at the Rex. Again the staff & the services were first class. We spent many an afternoon at the rooftop pool. We also used the Spa for a message & the spousal unit for a facial. It was great. The breakfast was excellent, very much like the Grand, right down to the over roasted coffee. We booked a premium room in the new section that faced the courtyard. No street noise and the rooms are comfortable. The Rex is basically two hotels. Like the Grand they have an original section and a new section. Reviewers had stated the old section is dark but the rooms are much larger. An excellent coffee shop and lunch café is out the back door to your left called “Bloom”.
The Rex’s proximity couldn’t be better for sightseeing. Again I would recommend the Rex.

Fabulous old world hotel currently undergoing major rebuild. Enormous, well appointed rooms in old part of hotel. Food and service perhaps not quite as good as we had experienced elsewhere in Vietnam

The Grand hotel is a charming property that has retained its old world appeal. It is not large but is comfortable and centrally located. We stayed at the 1st floor where the pool is also located. And because the room is very close to this common area, we had internet connection available all day long. The negative side was that our room (110) was facing the street so it was quite noisy at times. If you're a light sleeper, think about getting a room in a higher floor...Don;t forget to try the famouse VIetnamese coffee at breakfast. It really is good...There are lots of great restaurants near the hotel as well. Just across is Jaspas where we had steak and really good Mars Cheesecake. Down the road is the Vietnam Food House which serves quality Vietnamese food, although a bit pricey compared to other local restaurants. If you have some time before your flight, there are at least 2 things that come to mind. Try your luck in their casino (also located on the 1st floor), or go to the Golden Lotus Spa a block away, for some foot and body massage. A 60- min massage costs $12, while a 90-min one costs $15. Tip: To avoid stress, try to leave for the airport early. Our travel agent and the hotel staff kept on saying the airport is only 30 mins away. But with the traffic situation, it would take almost an hour.

Room Tip: 1st floor rooms have internet access from the rooms but more prone to noise

The pool, large rooms and location, make this a great choice for families. The hotel is currently undergoing major renovations, however this did not seem to compromise our stay.

The staff are very helpful.

The breakfast is fine. Large choice and good quality food.

I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, particularly to anyone with children. The pool, large apartment style rooms and locality appear to be a rare combination for HCMC.

Hotel chosen for location, swimming pool and inclusion of breakfast in price. On arrival staff were professional but not very friendly. Information was not forthcoming without asking eg wi-fi connection,
Our room was executive deluxe, renovated, clean, overlooking the pool but it had a shared door with the next room. Great for families but not for couples. We did ask for a change of room but that was not possible. The rooms opposite our one were under renovation, so had gaping holes for windows - not a very good view. The pool was not set up in the usual way due to the renovations. None of this was alluded to by the staff on our arrival.

On our 2nd day there a wedding was organised at the pool area including the bar, again we were not informed of this. It made us feel uncomfortable entering and exiting our room while such festivities were taking place as we were within full view of the bride and groom and their guests.

No milk was provided for tea or coffee so we had to buy a glass of milk from room service at an exorbitant price.

Many of the problems we encountered were probably due to the building works but it would have been nice if the staff had mentioned this on our arrival.

Location was perfect for all things to do and see in Ho Chi Min City. I would try this place again after the renovation is completed

This was a lovely Grand hotel with large family rooms and enough space for us with our two kids. However unfortunately there was a lot of construction going on around the hotel which we were unaware of and probably would have chosen to stay elsewhere had we known.
The staff were great and very helpful. The restaurant so so. It's definitely a good location close to everything.
