Only stayed three nights but loved our time at this hotel. The Oscar is in a great position in District One. From our window which fronted Nguyen Hue Boulevard we could see the Rex where we had stayed on our first visit in 2004.
Across the road is a modern shopping plaza which with a supermarket and other specialty stores which basically have Vietnamese prices for all your basics.
You are also handy to the river and the ferries to Vung Tau where I was going to go but I was sick; basically sick for the whole month of our last Asia sojourn. Still I enjoyed all aspects of the Oscar Saigon.
The room was very big and had that Vietnamese combination of being old, in the process of renovation but always clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable being a little softer than the mortuary slabs that usually pass as mattresses in Vietnam. Make sure you get a room with a window; the fact that they have rooms sans windows has led to a lot of criticism on Tripadvisor. I emailed them and made sure the rooms we had booked had windows and they were right on Nguyen Hue Boulevard which is a bit noisy but hey, this is Vietnam.
The front office staff were very friendly and although their English at times was halting we could always be understood. We used our limited Vietnamese which always led to laughter. Really you should try to learn a few Viet phrases they usually love the fact that you have tried.
The food at the hotel I found superb. We ate a couple of times just opposite the front desk and this was very convenient and we had excellent service even though the bartender had to serve drinks; beers and cocktails, be a waiter and deal with other guests' desires. We always tip well in Vietnam which you can because of the exchange rate and it is very much appreciated. Even though you might tip only $5 AUD for excellent dinner service it means a lot to the hotel staff. You should also give a couple of dollars to cleaning staff; they work very hard for not much.
The other thing I loved about the hotel was that the aircon worked very well and was very quiet. It was stinking hot in Saigon and the room was a bit of a sanctuary at times seeing I was feeling ill.
All in all a positive experience and we will go back, I am determined to get to Vung Tau.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a window.

This hotel is adequate if you want to explore the city, as it is situated central to the city. The rooms are clean and spacious. The AC works from big units that are mounted on the balcony of some of the rooms. If you are unlucky enough to get one of these rooms, then you may be disturbed by their operation. They seem to make a noise, even if you have the AC turned off.

The resteraunt is on the top floor, and I was not impressed by the quaiity of the breakfast or service. It is a buffet like most places, but their choice was limited. I didn't think the staff were particually friendly either. A bit indifferant.

In terms of location though, you can get to most places with a few minutes.
They don't offer any money exchange, which I found a bit odd, but there are so many outside, that it wasn't too much of a problem.

Probaley would not stay again, as I have been in much better.

Very good value for money though, expecially if you use the online discount vouchers

Room Tip: Dont have an AC unit outside your window

We stayed two nights. Room was small, but clean and comfortable. All staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast had adequate western and Asian food choices, but other restaurants close by are easily accessible if need be.liked the charm of a hotel that represented an era full of historical meaning to modern Vietnam

We stayed 3 nights in this hotel and it was very clean and comfortable. The hotel is located in a very good neighborhood with upscale shops and restaurants. The Rex Hotel is within walking distance as is the new shopping complex. There is also a super market with everything you could want. The breakfast was very good. The staff was friendly and very helpful. Just be sure to ask for rooms with a window as there are rooms without them. Great stay.

Room Tip: Ask for room with windows

We had a quick 2 nights in the Oscar Saigon. The rooms were small but clean-big fan of the wooden floors. Had safe (old school with a key) small mini bar (fridge was lukewarm) and standard amenities including robe and (cheap but adequate) slippers. The hallways were super warm and muggy but we kept our room super cold. The elevator was super small and slow (and a little scary). Free internet computer in lobby and wifi free in lobby and room (slower in room). Workout room is something out of the 70s so that was a little disappointing...really weird, random machines that were unusable and it was about 90 degrees and 100% humidity in the room. Had a spa (didn't use, but massages were very inexpensive). Breakfast was included and great-fresh fruit, omelettes made to order, and a great mix of Asian and Western food. Nice location in a clean, more upscale area of Saigon. Tons of close, good restaurants nearby, as well as shopping. Cabs anywhere in the city were cheap. The only other disappointing thing about the hotel (besides terrible water pressure and poor drainage) was i had emailed a special request in advance, received a confirmation and it was ignored, which brings down my rating. Otherwise, id say stay here if you can get a good rate.

This hotel has been nicely upgraded over the years. The reception area has been bought up to a nice modern clean area. Friendly staff abound who are very happy to assist with any need. The room that we had although spacious and with a real window, was a little dated however was clean and a good place to have an uninterrupted sleep after a big day touring around this large city. A tour desk in the foyer was very helpful in organising 2 tours, one to the Mekong Delta (recommend) and a tour of the city in the morning of our departure. The dining room is at the very top of this hotel and has panoramic views of the city. A huge variety of food suits a lot of different cultures so instead of looking for the bacon and eggs (they are there) try something new, you may be surprised! Down stairs they have added a lounge/bar area to have a social drink with fellow visitors. I have taught the barman how to pour a beer into a glass giving a nice head...hope he remembers for the next OZ tourist. Only real downside at this hotel and nothing has changed over the last 5 years is the abysmally slow and very small lifts. They are that slow that you nearly have to take a snack with you while waiting for your floor.

The Oscar Saigon is situated in district 1, which is as central as you can get. It is clean and more than adequate for a short stay in Ho Chi Minh city. The staff are friendly. Breakfast is a buffet offering traditional mixed with European. Plenty for all. I recommend this hotel.
