Only stayed three nights but loved our time at this hotel. The Oscar is in a great position in District One. From our window which fronted Nguyen Hue Boulevard we could see the Rex where we had stayed on our first visit in 2004.
Across the road is a modern shopping plaza which with a supermarket and other specialty stores which basically have Vietnamese prices for all your basics.
You are also handy to the river and the ferries to Vung Tau where I was going to go but I was sick; basically sick for the whole month of our last Asia sojourn. Still I enjoyed all aspects of the Oscar Saigon.
The room was very big and had that Vietnamese combination of being old, in the process of renovation but always clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable being a little softer than the mortuary slabs that usually pass as mattresses in Vietnam. Make sure you get a room with a window; the fact that they have rooms sans windows has led to a lot of criticism on Tripadvisor. I emailed them and made sure the rooms we had booked had windows and they were right on Nguyen Hue Boulevard which is a bit noisy but hey, this is Vietnam.
The front office staff were very friendly and although their English at times was halting we could always be understood. We used our limited Vietnamese which always led to laughter. Really you should try to learn a few Viet phrases they usually love the fact that you have tried.
The food at the hotel I found superb. We ate a couple of times just opposite the front desk and this was very convenient and we had excellent service even though the bartender had to serve drinks; beers and cocktails, be a waiter and deal with other guests' desires. We always tip well in Vietnam which you can because of the exchange rate and it is very much appreciated. Even though you might tip only $5 AUD for excellent dinner service it means a lot to the hotel staff. You should also give a couple of dollars to cleaning staff; they work very hard for not much.
The other thing I loved about the hotel was that the aircon worked very well and was very quiet. It was stinking hot in Saigon and the room was a bit of a sanctuary at times seeing I was feeling ill.
All in all a positive experience and we will go back, I am determined to get to Vung Tau.
