“Nice View of Saigon River”
Reviewed November 3, 2009

We stayed for two nights using our Marriot Rewards.Since we are Gold Card members we were immemdiately ushered to the Club Lounge on the 18th floor. The good thing is that even if we arrived early at 10 am and the check in is normally at 2pm, we were immediately given our rooms.

As Marriot gold card members we also had free breakfast and dinner or cocktails served at the Club Lounge.

As at all marriot hotels, I love their beds and pillows they are so soft. The thing is that in this hotel their toiletries are limited only to shamppo, lotion and body wash. They dont have shavers and toothpaste.toothbrush so one must bring their own toiletries.

The bad thing is that internet is only available in the Club and Atrium lounges unlike in Siem Reap even budget hotels have free wireless internet. They would charge you an arm and a leg to have internet connection in your room.

We enjoyed staying in the hotel since its just a few minutes walk to all attractions in the city

Everything was fine, but at no point outstanding. Rooms were comfortable, if you need a room one up from all your backpacking or budget hotels then this will work. Location though was amazing as views over the river and so close to some amazing food options. Charge for internet usage was extremely expensive compared to your options right outside the front door. Great umbrellas free to use!!

Room nice, Staff helpfull, Front desk tried to hard sell up grades of room on club level $55 add on a night, River view $22 a night add on at check in. Great views from pool area. Water for shower or bath luke warm at best. Saw a roch in bathroom one night when I turn on the lights. Seafood Buffet in restaurant very good and a good value, accually priced better than some street venders at the Ben Thanh Market at night for the same food. Locals like piranha fish everywhere once you leave the hotel. Everyone on the street wants to sell you something and they are very aggresive about it. Good luck crossing the street at rush hour.

We just traveled around Vietnam for 2 weeks, finishing in Saigon at the Renaissance, so we found ourselves comparing the Renaissance with the half dozen other 5 star hotels that we stayed it. It didn't compare favorably.

First, the location was great, and we had an 8th floor room facing the river. We were in Vietnam to photograph, so we were happy to be able to get some good river shots from the room. Except that the windows didn't open. And except that the windows were so dirty that we couldn't take good pictures through them. Disappointing.

The breakfast buffet was good, but didn't have the quality of pastries that we found elsewhere, or the range of fruit. We saw good mango on the streets everywhere in Saigon, but not at the hotel. The dim sum was good, and the fresh juices were a nice touch.

The Renaissance was the only one of our hotels in Vietnam not to have complimentary internet. They actually charged $15/day, which is more than the average Vietnamese daily wage! We spoke to the manager and he showed no signs of backing down on the fees. So we connected via iPhone instead, but were bitter that the hotel wouldn't throw it in free like everywhere else. It made us wish that we had stayed at the Sheraton 2 blocks away, which at least has a free wi-fi zone in the lobbies.

Other than the manager, the staff were helpful and knowledgeable. So good hotel overall, and good location, but I had the feeling that we could have done better elsewhere.

I am in the club lounge now, having breakfast and preparing to check out after a 3 night stay in early October.

This is a great hotel for a big city, 5 star hotel, in the heart of the central area of town. It does not provide much of an authentic or Vietnamese flavor, but that isn't its goal. The location provides easy access to most attractions, restaurants, massages etc.

If you are looking for a clean, reputable hotel with the Marriott bedding, mattresses, good bathrooms and the high level of Marriott attention to detail, then this will serve your needs well. In the noisy, large, polluted city of HCMC we were glad to have it to return to at the end of a hot, humid day, but are now ready to move on to more botique type of hotels in smaller towns.

Check In: We are Gold members and were escorted by the front desk staff to the club lounge on the 18th floor to check in. It was 11 p.m. and check in went smoothly, was efficient and the clerk was pleasant and welcoming.

Room: We were in room 1907, which was one floor above the club lounge. The room was immaculate and cleaned well every day, except that the maid did not leave new shampoo, conditioner or body wash each morning and we ran out on the last morning. The room was very large, had a sitting area with a love seat and two chairs, desk, good TV, coffee bar, great bathroom with separate shower from tub, comfortable king size bed, overlooking the river. There is a negative to overlooking the river, as that also means overlooking a very busy street. Even with being 19 floors up, you are awoken by the honking horns of the traffice very early in the morning. I'd recommend ear plugs. You can get wireless acess via the connection in the club level in those rooms that are close the the club lounge.

Club Lounge: The breakfast in the club lounge was good. Not fantastic, but good. It had 4 or 5 hot entrees each morning plus you could order eggs or Pho. I had the Pho one morning and it was awful. The meat was so fatty it couldn't be eaten. The cheap Pho we found downtown was much better. The fruit was very good and fresh and there is an assortment of breads, yogurt (no granola though) and cereal. It met our needs. The evening appetizers and drinks were great. The wine was good and the staff was attentive to refilling drinks. There were generally 4 hot appetizers and several cold with a variety of desserts (didn't try the desserts but my husband liked them). There is good wireless access in the lounge and two computers for guests.

Staff: Staff in the club lounge were good. Staff at the front desk and bell staff were fine but not outstanding. Never rude, but sometimes, after standing for a few minutes with no one waiting on me because they were talking with one another, I would have to obtain there attention to get service. Once their attention was obtained, they were good. When we arrived we didn't have the extra towels we had ordered and they were promptly brought, along with an adapter and extra hangers.

Restaurants: We checked out the price of the dinner buffet but at $28 per person we decided to go elsewhere.

Pool: The pool itself is great. It is on the roof top and open air. The temperature of the water was wonderful and the pool was large enough to do some swimming. There are only about 14 lounge chairs but several tables with chairs. It was fairly busy when we were there. There is a bar, but there was no bar service unless you went up to the bar to order. They did bring the drinks to your chairs though. I thought this odd as there was a pool attendant who just stood around and did nothing when she could have been taking drink orders. The view was fantastic.

Overall, not much to fault about this place. It met our expectations and provided exactly what we thought it would provide. A good respite at the end of the day.

We stayed at the club room for 3 nights recently and the service in this hotel cannot be faulted. I only gave it 4 stars as I felt the rates were way too high (even when using my company's corporate rate). We decided to stay in the club rooms as it came with breakfast. My company's corporate rate does not include breakfast and if you factor in breakfast for 2, then the regular rooms would have cost more that what I paid for the club level which came with breakfast (go figure!). We had breakfast at both the club level and at Riverside Cafe on the ground level. I have to say that the breakfast on the gound level was better in terms of variety.

The other thing was the decor of the lobby and the rooms. It seemed a little dated but it was clean and everything is in good working condition, well almost everything. We had an issue with the air-con in the room. It was generally pretty cool during the day and in the evenings but when we went to sleep, somehow the temp creeps upwards towards 24 deg c. We liked it to be a cooler 20 to 21 deg. No matter how we tired to set it, it always end up at about 24 - 25 deg c. It was irrating to say the least and it woke us up on all 3 nites. Besides that, everything else was working fine. They are doing some renovation in the lobby area and the gym while I was there. The make-shift gym was in a series of 4 or 5 rooms so it was a bit weird and I decided not to use it. The pool area looks very inviting but again I did not get a chance to use it as the 1 day that I wanted to try, it rained.

Anyway, like I said, the service is wonderful. Every one from the front desk staff in the main lobby to the waiters/waitresses in the restaurants. We had requested them to recommend a tour agency for us to book some day tours before we left and they put us in touch with Buffalo Tours, which has an office on the 4th flr. I highly recommend the city tour and the Cu Chi tunnel tours. It was a real eye-opener for me.

The location of the hotel is great and it is within walking distance to most of the place of interest. We did not take a taxi until we were going to the airport for our flight back. They are also lots of eating place around the hotel and so except for breakfast, we did not eat at the hotel. It is also cheaper to eat out, of course.

So, to sum up ... it is a good hotel but a bit on the expensive side. But then again, so are most other 4-5 stars hotel in HCMC. So, if you want to pamper yourself, go for it. Everything else is so cheap in HCMC so why not???

This hotel has it all-- location, good facilities, and great service. It's the perfect place to relax on vacation.
LOCATION: on the river and proximate (5-10 minutes walk) to the main attractions such as the central market, several museums and good shopping and art gallery browsing streets. . The streets around the hotel have some good restaurants and are not "over-touristed". Also within walking distance to the best jazz bar in Saigon (Sax n Art)
FACILITIES: decent gym with good variety of cardio and weights. The pool is eye-catching. Although not overly large (15 to 18 meters?) it's beautifully done and on the roof, amidst the 360 views of the city. Gets sun in the morning and afternoon. The service on the pool deck is also good (drinks, cool towels). The room amenities are everything that one would expect from a 4 or 5 star hotel, and everything is in working condition and relatively new. Ipod charger, music jacks, 32 inch LCD, etc etc
Business center offers computer rental and internet access, and surprisingly, the prices are not outrageous.
SERVICE: excellent. Staff will meet special requests (sports arrangements, reservations) and also help travellers to get the right transport at the right price, even for motorcycle taxis!

All in all, no complaints. Would stay here again.
