“Excellent place to stay!”
Reviewed November 30, 2012

Stayed here with a friend, right opposite where our bus dropped us off so easy to find and an excellent location in general, right in the heart of the backpackers street, close to bars, shops and most attractions of Saigon. Staff are very welcoming and friendly, speak good English and are willing to give local advice. Good value for money too, important when traveling on a budget and the rooms are clean and comfy! Highly recommended to any traveller visiting Saigon! :-)

I poked my head into this hostel by chance as I was walking past looking for a new place to sleep. Such a great find! The staff were LOVELY, the location was perfect on the corner of Pham Ngu Lao and De Tham [next door to Allez Boo], the room was clean - couldn't really go wrong considering I paid just $7 for the bed. The rooms have AC too [although they turn it off during the day and you have to remind them to turn it on again]. The rooms are a bit of a hike up a LOT of stairs, but the location [and the views!] negate that in my opinion.

Room Tip: There's the ground floor, a floor 0, then floors 1, 2, 3 etc - keep that in mind when they give...

We arrived in HCMC at around 10pm and walked about the main center of District 1 Pham Ngu Lao, and stumbled upon this place by chance, decided to just check in here instead of looking around other places - after a 6 hour bus journey from Phnom Penh, all you want to do is to just eat and then sleep!

It was a good decision! The room was very clean, although small, but it was just nice for 2 tired travelers who just want a decent place for the night. At $16, it was value for money - A/C, cable tv, hot shower, free breakfast (we never got up on time anyway :) but free coffee/tea anytime in the day as you wish), a desktop in the reception area to use, and best for me, wifi in the room! Also, King, the person who manages the hostel was very friendly and helpful and knowledgeable on where to go etc. And I had to make a few phone calls from their place as my cellphone had a mind of its own and refused to cooperate so he used his own phone to help me and he didn't even charge me for those calls! How nice was that! Another one of the staff whose name I never got, sorry, was equally helpful. They also have a travel center that operates tours and open bus tickets for all over Vietnam and they are very helpful with anything that you want to know, and with patience too!
We stayed 2 nights before heading off to Mui Ne. All in all, a really nice place, value for money given the fact that it is smack in the center of District 1, walking distance to just about anywhere to eat, drink, massages/spas, shopping, banks...we actually looked around for other options and we found elsewhere cheaper by a dollar or 2 (same area) but with not so nice rooms and with no wifi no breakfast etc so really, Saigon Balo Hostel is your best bet for a value for money place right in the middle of everything!

Highly recommend it! Thanks King and that other guy with glasses! :)

Happy experience. Property used to be May Them hostel along Pham Ngu Lau. Good service given by the staff. Room cleaned everyday. Clean sheets and towels. Flowing coffee. Wifi internet available in the rooms; a desktop computer available for all guests at the lobby. Overall experience was great and when I go back to Ho Chi Minh, I will stay here again.

Room Tip: Mixed rooms. Dorm and private rooms available. Rooms at the back are more quiet.
