Saigon Europe Hotel
Ranked #82 of 476 Hotels in Ho Chi Minh City
Reviewed March 19, 2012

Our experience began when we booked with a sister hotel that was full - I received a number of friendly and quick emails suggesting we stay at Saigon Europe - they were so nice that we were off to a good start already - they obviously cared about our business.

From reading the reviews you will see it's in the main tourist area - our room was at the back of the hotel so we heard nothing of that. And being in the busy part of Saigon is part of the fun of the trip isn't it?

The room was clean. There were two large beds and plenty of additional space. Everything worked as it should - it was well maintained. The breakfast selection gets lots of comments - eggs any way you want them, toast, cornflakes, three types of fresh fruit, toasted sandwich. It was perfectly adequate - we had the choice to go across the road but weren't really tempted.

The other big plus of this place is the staff. They are obviously being schooled in being helpful, friendly and just downright nice. They booked tours, gave advice, smiled and chatted - as friendly as any hotel staff anywhere. I have seen other reviews from people suggesting otherwise - we engaged the staff in discussion and never had any problem or cause for confusion with any of them.

The building is small - but look around - they're all small in Saigon! Would I go back and stay again - absolutely. Would I recommend it to you? Absolutely.

Room Tip: we asked for a room with a window and I would suggest trying for one away from the street.

I got a superior room for 4 nights from the 13th to 17th of March (US$42/night). While the memories are still fresh in my mind, let me share with you the good and the bad details.
Pros:
1) Excellent location right in the heart of all the action.
2) Spoiled for choices with all the restaurants and street foodstalls around.
3) Computer works reasonably well, though internet is not up to speed.
4) Good enough air conditioner (extremely important in the heat of HCMC)
5) Fuss-free and well appointed travel options with their partners TNK.

Cons:
1) Though helpful, receptionist seems unfriendly and a little overbearing.
2) If you love a hot shower, choose another hotel. Shower is not warm enough.
3) Extremely noisy!! I usually sleep late, 1-3am but the loud music from the clubs along the streets seems to go on forever. Not forgetting the noisy early morning hornings.
4) My room is infested with lots of ants. Can't leave a cola around for more than half an hour.
5) No complimentary mineral water, though they have in it in their minibar at a very cheap price.
6) Breakfast is not the best, but edible.

In short, its a fair deal if you can live with the loud noise. Nothing fancy and serve its purpose.
But for the price, HCMC has loads of hotel that might deliver a better experience.

Good staff, pretty ordinary breakfast. Good location, but room had an odd musty odor and bath leaked on floor

I had initially reserved a room at Beautiful Saigon 2 or 3. But since they were fully booked, I was automatically referred to this hotel. It is in a good location on the main road. My superior room was very clean and spacious. I was on the4th flr facing the street so there was a tolerable amount of street noise especially at night. I did get a good night's sleep as the beds were comfortable. They provide a small bowl of fruit upon checkin. There is also a mini bar but no complimentary drinking water. In room Computer and wifi was the best feature for me. Breakfast was adequate. Staff was pleasant, courteous and efficient. Value for money. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

Although described as a Back-Packers hotel, we found it excellent in many ways: A splendid location, in the midst of colourfull actions with lots to see and do. A teriffic staff who were always helpful and skilled. A great breakfast, with acceptable options. High standards of cleanliness and efficiency. Our group of 4 people all agreed that this place could not be beaten for value for money and should not be labelled as back-packers' accommodation.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the less the street noise

We stayed here two nights after the Beautiful Saigon 3 was full. Overall, not impressed with the hotel.

Location - we read a lot of recs to stay in pham ngu lao but honestly we thought it was too busy. The streets were like living in a frat party. After getting to know saigon I would stay west of the ben than market next time.

Service - the staff was not very helpful and rude at times. We came in at 6am and they initially wanted to charge us for checking in before noon, even though we told them that we would be arriving early and the room was available. Other small things were also annoying like the safe not having directions, and the staff being rude when we asked for more towels. The breakfast was not very good compared to other places...they did not even have butter.

The room was clean but small. Ours did not have windows which was good considering the street noise but made it dark at times. Our shower flooded the first day due to a slow drain, which was not a good experience especially when the staff told us it was normal at first. Also, the drain is outside the shower, and the bathroom gets a little wet. But the shower was good and hot.

When we paid in dong the exchange rate they gave was 3% worse then the bank rate. Most hotels in Vietnam that we stayed at were willing to give the bank rate if we asked. Not this hotel.

overall, we were expecting more and were disappointed, especially with the staff. I'm sure there are better hotels and areas in saigon.

We upgraded to a superior room (Room 301) and had a comfy king-sized bed room at the front of the hotel. The room and bathroom were lovely and spacious with good air conditioning, free wifi, plus a computer in the room for us to use. From around 10pm each evening there was a lot of noise coming from The Crazy Buffalo bar down the street, so if you need more peace and quiet, you might be better to opt for a room nearer the back of the hotel.

If I had to be a bit picky, it would have been nice to have had light switches near the bed rather than by the door, as it saves you getting out of bed to turn them off.

The staff spoke good English and were super-efficient at booking trips and bus tickets for us. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Don't choose a room at the front of the hotel if you want a quiet night.
