Main tourist area for backpackers & traveler. Great place to stay, visit & a must see. Gets fairly busy, especially of a night & weekend. Great to sit in one of the bars, cafés of street stalls & watch the passing crowd.
Highlands coffee - great for a Vietnamese iced coffee & to get away from the heat of the day.
A lacquered timber souvenir shop on the same side towards markets - great value for gifts & souvenirs & some great stuff.
Dugong Bui Vien - street behind running parallel to Pham Ngu Lao, some good eating/drink places, (Five Oysters) & shopping here too (Marathon clothes shop).
Shops here found to be fixed price & great prices. Markets stalls in Ben Thanh tend to tell you double the price then expect you to haggle, often still more expensive. Enjoyable place in HCM City

According to survey on tourism in the Pham Ngu Lao area released last year by District 1 authorities and the HCMC University of Economics, the area attracts 1,900 tourists every day, rendering revenues of more than VND8 trillion ($380 million) a year.
Although the city has planned to spruce up the backpackers’ area and improve relevant services, it has made little progress so far besides police raids that many say actually hurt local tourism.
Last year, HCMC authorities planned to “rearrange” the area after finding many eateries illegally occupying sidewalks and streets and bars playing loud music until early in the morning.
The District 1 People’s Committee has proposed that the city administration expedite the implementation of a plan to establish pedestrian-only streets, including on Bui Vien and Pham Ngu Lao.
Either up to know, it's getting more and more irritating that every time sitting at a quiet place and your table and chairs are removed by the restaurant or in worse case by the cowboys.
Sorry there is no police here, the unqualified guards terrorizing the restaurant owners and thousand of guests.
The People’s Committee should get some better organisation and tourism friendly approach.
Look at all the big cities, how they deal with this. A shame for beautiful Vietnam.
I have to enforce that HCM City is on the way to kill off a near perfect tourism and cultural asset with great potential.

it's night street like Hanoi. Look around to buy some things for you or gifts for your friends and enjoy food here. Price is great.
