“happening place”

Pham Ngu Lao Street
Attraction details
Reviewed July 23, 2012

this area is the best place out there as most hotels/hostels/tours/restaurants/pubs are located here and is very central to most city places...
in the evening the place comes alive as most pubs are crowded...........
its a very good hangout place and you can meet up with other travellers.........

We stayed in a guest house along Pham Ngu Lao. As you walk around this street and the streets off Pham Ngu Lao you will find tailors, great food. Its a busy street with early morning markets, street vendors, chaos and serenity as people exercise across the road in the park. Night time is the best time to be around Pham Ngu Lao. The traffic is crazy. Love playing 'chicken' walking across the road during pan hour. The restaurants and the staff are friendly and inviting. You make good "friends" with the locals. Plenty of fun things to buy. The business end looks like most modern cities. Pham Ngu Lao is what makes traveling fun. Check it out

This is a good first stop from Ho Chi Minh airport. The racy meter reads about 120,000 but they demand 180. Not sure if that is a minimum or if I just got taken. Speaking of getting taken, this place thrives on pinching tourists, especially those who are fresh off the boat.

That being said, it is a good place to start your visit with $10-20 hotel rooms, $1.25 beers and good budget food. There are countless travel agents and tour companies and other tourist services like laundry.

A day or two spent here to get your trip started is not a bad way to go for the budget or adventure traveler. It's a great location.

I quite enjoyed Pham Ngu Lao street despite it being nicknamed "Backpacker Ghetto". The food there was cheap, drinks were cheap, and was great. Lots of people around and lots of shops. For tourists that want to see familiar faces then there's heaps of tourists here to feel safe. Lots of pumping bars, yummy bakeries, art shops, trendy clothes stores - this is probably a great one stop shop area to be!
