“Check Out the Gift Shop”

Ho Chi Minh City Museum

The building is more interesting than the exhibits, but be sure to check out the small gift shop which offers interesting items not found elsewhere. Avoid the temptation to purchase the key chains with a military bullet attached. Our traveling companion had his confiscated at the airport. Thank you airport security.

This museum seems to have been neglected over the past few years, although there was evidence of some renovation work going on when we visited. The exhibits mainly deal with the culture and life of people in HCMC with rather tired presentation and not well labelled. Not one to put first on your list to visit.

We stumbled across this museum by accident and found it interesting. The building feels of the splendour of a bygone era with the beautiful staircase going up to the second floor. The large timber louver windows which open up onto balconies are great to soak up the atmosphere of this once grand building with crystal chandeliers. There are various exhibits to view from arts and crafts to the communist revolution. There are also numerous artefacts and you can purchase some historical collectables including military items from a small stall inside. The main reason I liked this museum was the building itself is a place captured in time.

This museum was a little dissapointing compared to others we visited. The history was brief but the vietnam war was interesting to follow the locals and how they made a living.

The museum is housed in a beautiful neo-classical structure built in 1885. The inside exhibitions are an interesting insight to the history of the city shown through archeological finds, pottery, clothes and photographs. My favorite exhibit was the old dollars and coins upstairs, but I think the real attraction is the beauty of the building itself. Admission is 15,000 dong, open 8am-4pm. From here you can also take a quick walk to check out the architecture of the Opera House, walk north on Ly Tu Trong, then left on Dong Khoi to Le Loi.
