Cai Be Floating Market, Sa Dec Town and Mekong Queen Cruise Day Trip from Ho...

Picked up at our District 1 hotel at 7.30 AM and bussed to Cai Be some 2.5 hours away. Straight on a day boat for a look at the floating market. By the time you get there most of the market is gone, but well worth a look. Visited a village and were shown rice popcorn and coconut candy being made. Sampled some rice wine (whoa). Back on the boat, visited an island and had lunch. Basic meal included with cheap drinks on offer. Back on the boat to another area where we were put on small row boats and taken up a canal to see locals going about their normal day. Visited a plantation and sampled local fruits, tea and song and dance. Back on the boat, return to Cai Be and drive back to HCMC arriving at about 6.30 PM. Well worth the visit, time and money (about $25 each). Our guide Hung was very good, and according to him the best looking man in Vietnam.

We started the tour by trekking through the fruit plantation at Thoi Son Island and reached a village to have some fruits and tea while enjoying the music and song by the locals. Next, we took a rowing boat ride through the Tan Thach natural canal that brought us to the next destination which is a coconut sweet making place managed by a family. Subsequently, we took a motorboat to Tortoise Island where we had a sumptuous local meal for lunch. We ended the tour with a visit to a Buddhist temple. In this one day tour, we had the chance to visit 4 different places and had a wonderful experience.

A day on the cruise gave an insight into the river life of Ho Chi Minh City. I found it fascinating, enjoyable and intriguing. A visit to the home industries was interesting - no pressure to buy, but good value. Extraordinary lunch with elephant ear fish - decorating beautiful ad food of excellent quality - right in the middle of nowhere. We did the trip through Mekong Travel - it was excellent - even the finale of fresh coconut milk - how refreshingly difference.

This is a tourist set up which I would normally avoid but it's a great day out. The group was small with just six people. Our tour guide Tommy had great English and was friendly and obliging. The two hours bus trip was a bit tough, but for a newbie like me it was interesting. There is a quick stop at a rather magnificent Temple just before getting to the wharf. Then it's a bit non-stop action as you proceed through the tour. Expect canoe rides, riding on a small horse cart, tasting different things (I recommend Snake Wine) and a great lunch with Elephant ear fish. Cost was$34 and seemed to be really good value. Recommended.

It was a very packed day, planned to give you a lot of exposure in a limited time. Alhough one is taken to all the home industries, I never felt obliged to buy something. See my picture of the making of rice paper. We were quite intriuged with all the rice products. This trip is however not for the old and frail: the transfers to the different boats and the long and bumpy ride could be tiresome. The local market we walked through just before we boarded the bus introduced us to some local cuisine: live snakes, chickens, worms, 8 different kind of eggs, rice etc.
