“Nice boat trip”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

I chose this company as the whole trip was on the boat not like others that use a van to drive down and then do a short boat tour. It was an interesting ride from HCMC to the delta, we got to see how the poor peple fight for their living at the banks of Mekong. The guide offered a lot of facts about Vietnam but I found him cocky. It was a good day and the refreshments were great.

“Average experience at best”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

The roads to the cu chi tunnels are long winded, so it is a couple hours that way. The river boat, which is a shallow hull simple boat with bench seating and a 200hp outboard motor, is a quicker route (90mins) plus it allows for some views of the Saigon river. That is the good part.

The bad ? The tour is definitely going through the motions and lacks the enthusiasm common in many Saigon tour company excursions.

The 'breakfast' consisted of a soggy croissant with ham and a soggy tomato. The Saigon Express people (there were 5 on the boat for 9 guests) kept entirely to themselves, offering no information or insight to the tourists for the whole trip up the river.

the cu chi visit itself ? Interesting enough, but you get rushed along from hole to hole to make way for the group behind you ( and this is the low season...apparently it gets worse over the high season). You sit through a 15 minute propaganda film produced by the communist party in 1975 bashing the American soldiers, etc., which I suppose is understandable but far from balanced. I'm not American but if I were I think I might be quite off put by this.

The lunch on the dock before returning was surprisingly good (not great), and thankfully it was sunny all the way back to Saigon.

Not cheap either ....better bang for the buck with Vietnam Vespa Tours on bikes. Way more entertaining and engaging. And as far as the city, try Tiger Tours !

Dear traveller,

It is our pleasure to have such an objective feedback from the guests we have served. We understand that there are certain things we need to improve for our tours.

For your feedback, there are some points we need to clarify as they are external factors that we cannot control. As for the staff, we have some trainee hosts/hostesses, and I am sure that the trip you were in was the one that had the trainee on. We always carry 4 staff, who are the tour guide, the host/hostess, the engineer and the captain. Together with the trainee, it made the staff number became 5.

As for the tour, it is a standard tour in Cu Chi Tunnels. The sight has some certain options for the guests, such as: watch the video, explore the sight, go down the tunnels, taste the local traditional tea and tapioca roots, and go around to reminisce the war-time lifestyle. Most of the group would do the same tour, but with different itinerary in order to avoid being stuck in the crowd. Many of tourists who come to Saigon would go to Cu Chi Tunnels, so on some certain days, the sight would become more crowded than it usually is. We are sorry that you did not have a full satisfaction about the sight, but the video and the tunnels are necessary parts of the tour to understand more about the history of the sight.

As for the breakfast, we only give the light breakfast because usually the guests already have breakfast at the hotel beforehand. So that is why the breakfast is only with croissant with ham and tomatoes. Together with it, we also offer Vietnamese milk coffee. We are more than glad to know that you are satisfied with the lunch. For the quality, we promise to keep checking and increasing the meal quality to the excellent level.

We know Vespa tour, they are of course great, and we believe that it is one of the best way to explore Saigon city. Though every type of trip is unique, boat tour is different from bike tour, at least in terms of destination. We go to sights that are outside Saigon region, places that are difficult to reach by bikes and bus since you might face the traffic jam.

I hope that we at least had given you a pretty good experience during the time you were in Vietnam.
Best,
Les Rives - Saigon River Express

“Faultless - Professionally-run Operation to the Tunnels”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

We booked the Saigon River Express / "Rives" speedboat trip to the Cu Chi tunnels via our hotel concierge.

Rives collected us from the hotel at 8am-sharp in an air-con minibus for the short trip to the waterfront.

There was a modern white speedboat with 200hp outboard and canopy to protect from the sun. After a slow start in the harbour we were soon zooming up-river slowing occasionally to pass under low-bridges.

As we were short of time in HCMC, we told ourselves that taking the boat to the Cu Chi tunnels would mean that we'd see some river-based life as we couldn't squeeze-in a trip to the Mekong Delta. It had the bonus of getting us to the tunnels more quickly in just over an hour before the crowds.

Although it was a hot and humid day, the speedboat breeze kept us cool and in July we didn't see any mosquitos. The boat had an engineer in case of mechanical problems - he wasn't needed but it spoke volumes about the professionalism of the company.

We did indeed get to the tunnels before the crowds and our guide was knowledgeable and spoke good English.

After 2 hours at the tunnels (including the chance to fire an AK47) it was back on the boat for a good rice with pork or chicken lunch with fruit and drinks for the trip back.

Tip -. There's a copy-book widely available from street-hawkers called "The Cu Chi Tunnels" by Tom Mangold (a White Cover with big red Title) detailing the tunnel war from both American and Vietnamese perspectives. If you have time it really pays to read this before you go. It makes the whole tunnel fighting campaign in the context of the wider Vietnam war so much easier to understand.

This was a great excursion that was professionally run that gets you to the tunnels feeling refreshed and back home for 1pm. Good but pricey... especially with the 10% commission to the hotel concierge. We should have booked direct.

“Best way to get to the Cu Chi Tunnels”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

After reading various reviews about how long it would take by coach to get to the Cu Chi tunnels from our hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, we decided to go with Saigon River Express. The Tripadvisor reviewers helped with the decision too.

We were not disappointed. A shuttle bus picked us up from the Caravelle Hotel and took us to the pier. It was an amazing trip zooming up the river with no traffic in sight. We did not go hungry either as the guides gave us croissants, fruit and Vietnamese coffee for breakfast.

The guides were also very informative when we got to Cu Chi. It was very interesting seeing the Vietnam War from another perspective as well. Towards the end of the tour, we were all given a chance to crawl through part of the tunnels open for tourists. Needless to say, I don't know how the Viet Cong managed to survive in those tunnels as I could barely survive for more than 5 minutes.

Before hopping on the boat back to Ho Chi Minh City, we were treated to a delicious lunch spread and we were so full by the end.

My advice to everyone who wants to go see the Cu Chi Tunnels - take the Saigon River Express!
