“What is the big deal about this hotel?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2011

I stayed at a deluxe room at the Kingston Hotel in Saigon, in June 2011. The location was good, the hotel very ordinary. The room I stayed was a drab interior, and I found that all the rooms had Panasonic television -- the bulky ones from the 1990s instead of the flat screen TVs that most hotels now have. There were a lot of tourists from Indonesia,
Philippines, staying in June 2011 when I was there. I wondered why the hotel was full -- I suppose it had contracts with booking agencies. The tour groups make the small hotel very messy and crowded during breakfast time. Luckily for that full occupancy, I moved to another hotel after two nights and found a better one -- not so crowded, not so dull. The breakfast at the Kingston hotel needed a lot of improvement. The service staff lacked motivation and enthusiasm. If your travel agent booked you this hotel, stay one or two nights, then move to other hotels on the same street (there are about 12 hotels next door & opposite!) to enjoy either better price or better rooms.

The biggest trap for tourists going to Vietnam is probably the taxis. However, given the poor public transport system in hcmc, taxi was the only way we travelled

Before our trip to hcmc, I did extensive research on hcmc and the most useful tip I got is about taxi. If you wish to flag down a cab on the street, only flag those from "vinasun" or "MaiLinh". They are the two biggest cab companies in Vietnam and the drivers are on stable salary instead of commission. Thus lowering the probability of over charging. I stuck to this rule during my stay in Vietnam and found the fares very reasonable and cheap!

At the airport, it is where the over charging cab drivers cluster. When you walked out of the airport, walk straight to the left and there you find the mai linh taxi stand. The staff wears a card on his chest so it's easy to recognize. They never pull people onto their cars!! When I arrived at the hotel, the receptionist was so surprised about my cheap taxi fare!
The hotel lobby is a bit worn out and needs renovation. However, we are pleasantly surprised when we got to our rooms, given that we paid such a low price! The receptionist at night spoke only basic English. The female receptionist at day time spoke much better English. However, when we tried to exchange currencies at the hotel desk, me and my friend got two different rates! I am very sure this is not due to fluctuations in the exchange rate market. So, better exchange your currencies elsewhere!

The best thing I like about this hotel is the bathroom. It is huge and the water pressure is good! But the light was a bit dim.
Second good thing about the hotel is its location, very close to the local market! (don't try to eat at the market as they are real traps for tourists! Many restaurants do not write their prices on the menu and we got charged such a high mark up!)
Oh and one last thing, my flight leaving hcmc was at 6am and surprisingly, there's a restaurant open in the terminal serving Pho and some basic cakes/ coffee ! The restaurant opens at 5am and the food wasn't too bad. The Pho costs 6usd but you'd expect much more expensive in airports in other countries!

Good location, and not bad value if you get a good deal. The room (8001) we had was overlooking the street. A bit noisy during the day, but by 10pm fairly quiet by Saigon standards. Room and bathroom was spacious. Bath had shower over. Shower curtain was a bit mouldy & needed replacing. Bath in our room was very high off the floor and would be a problem for the elderly - difficult to get in & out even for me. This may be only an issue with some rooms, as another couple I spoke with, didn't have the same type bath.
Bed was a bit better than the usual rock hard Vietnam standard. TV was CRT, so not great but watchable.
Breakfast was not great. Orange "juice" was powder with water added. Only a few varieties of fruit. Worst of all, the hotel has lots of package tours, so if you go to breakfast at the wrong time, it's bedlam.
Wifi was great in the foyer, but very patchy on the 8th floor.
There are lots of other hotels in this street, so you could probably do better elsewhere.

We spent 3 nights in the Kingston hotel, 2 in a standard room and one in a deluxe. I did not notice any difference between the two rooms besides deluxe being slightly larger with more natural light. The rooms are impressively clean, offer bath / shower with ample hot water, wifi, A/C and a small T.V.
Kingston is close to many restaurants, as well as offering prompt and tasty room service with both Viet and Western cuisines.
Our rooms (3001 & 9006) were both reasonably noisy, but that said, so was every other hotel we stayed at in major cities.
The staff are helpful, speak reasonable English and do their job well. Breakfast was standard hotel, toast, eggs, pho, fruit.
We have only praise for the Kingston Hotel.

Rooms are in desperate need of overhaul. We stayed in a 'deluxe' - wouldn't want to see the standards. Rooms are not cleaned - spills on tables and floor were left - some from previous occupant. DO NOT use the spa services. They accept your booking, take your money then tell you that you must pay/tip the person who provides the foot massage, manicure etc - as what you are charged for on the 'menu' is apparently only access to the space not the actual person to provide the service. And the man who tells you does so in a rather menacing manner. Breakfast is substandard. Most staff very pleasant and helpful - woman running breakfast was outright rude when some fruit other than the rockhard inedible guavas was requested. An orange was later provided.
We reported a missing wallet - not wanting to point a finger at the room staff we suggested it may have been lost anywhere in the hotel and asked front desk to check lost property, laundry etc - but to no avail. Fortunately there were no cards just a nice new 500,000 dong note.

Near market and many attractions, without the noise. Ask for ninth floor rooms at the rear. Everything asked for was quickly produced. Room was small but clean, cool, bed was comfortable and I slept very well. Very good shower. Ask for non-smoking rooms. Lots of Vietnamese hotels and restaurants still allow smoking so ask for clean areas. Took the tour, which you can get for $10 person at most tour companies. The spa packages included are free if staying for 3 nights but watch for the hard sell for tipping $5 per person. The free meal deal sounds good but you get a set menu which is adequate but you can get fantastic food at the local market. Breakfast is good but they do run out of some items when hotel is full.

We were booked for three days in a non smoke room. When we arrived we were given a room that stunk of smoke, as my wife and I are non smokers we complained to reception. They were only to happy to change us, however while shifting our luggage a memory stick was missed. When we remembered and went back to check for it ,it was missing. The case it was in was still there although it had been moved and the stick gone(all our photos from first 2 weeks in Vietnam). The room had not been reoccupied and only hotel staff had been in the room. We complained to reception again and although they investigated the stick was not found. It is a bad reflection on the hotel that this stick was not passed to reception so that it could of been returned to us. If the safe had been open so we could of secured our valuables this may not of happened but we would have expected more honesty from staff. Only bad experince we had on our holiday. Be careful at this hotel
