My wife and I flew into HCMC and were ready for some rest after a very long overnight flight. In the process of booking our room with the hotel I took the option of their pickup from the airport which I must say was great as there was a driver waiting for us and he dropped us off at the end of the alley where the hotel is located. Hassle free and worth the $5 extra over the normal taxi fare.
We were on the 6th floor and yes it is a climb up especially when we were carrying our rucksacks in the heat of mid day.
The rooms are great, very clean and quiet, staff very helpful, when they are asked for assistance. Breakfasts are fresh and cooked to order with a limited choice on the menu.
We stayed here again for one night after our trip around Vietnam, we had a warm welcome as if we were coming home. Loved the market in the alley each morning and seeing day to day life in the city.

Room Tip: Lower level rooms are better if you cannot cope with flights of stairs.

The staff are professional, our room is immaculately clean and BIG, it's a great location with the downtown area a short walk away, and they'll serve you some of the best beef pho you can ask for as part if the free breakfast they provide.
The hotel is in the busy backpacker area, but it's off on a side street so you don't have to deal with street noise in the evening/morning. The hotel only has stairs, and we stayed on the 6th floor, but it wasn't so bad. Anyone who struggles with that could ask for a lower level room.
All of the tours we booked knew where the Cat Huy hotel was and didn't have a problem finding us.
We got our laundry done here and they did a great job on that. We booked both of our transfers to the airport through them and had no problems seeing our driver holding a sign with our names when we arrived.
The beds are comfortable but firm as per the rest of Asia. The WiFi is great; fast and reliable, we did a Skype call with it and didn't have any issues. There's a safety box in the closet bolted down, which was great for peace of mind.
All is good here, we really loved it and are sad to leave today. If we came back to HCMC we'd definitely stay here again. For the price, location, amenities and staff; you can't beat it.

Room Tip: We stayed in 602 which has a great view towards downtown. You can look down and see the happenings o...

Loved this place! Stayed there based on the excellent Trip Advisor reviews and we were not disappointed. Location is great, rooms are spacious and well set out and the staff were friendly and genuinely warm. The breakfast was simple but everything we could ask for. For $36 a night this place is a steal!

If I need to identify a drawback - it's down an alley and if you are arriving by night might be a little daunting to find but if you find the sign on Pham Ngu Lao St (quite a prominent red sign) you'll be fine! Also there is no lift so if you struggle with stairs it's maybe not for you.

Unexpected delights - the central HCMC park is right over the road and if you get over there at 6pm you can participate in the aerobics class. You will find badminton, Marshall Arts, ballroom dancing (morning), and featherball - hacky sack with a shuttlecock - and all manner of families enjoying the space. It's like a great big shared backyard and the people were wonderful and friendly.

Also in the morning the alley is a market - it's great to eat your breakfast and watch commerce in action.

Highly recommend this place - thanks to all the TA reviewers - completely on the money here!

We enjoyed our stay here. The value for money is very good but it is a basic hotel. The beds were a little hard for my liking and there is no elevator so if you have mobility issues suggest you ask for rooms on lower floors. All amenities are available but are basic in terms of standard and maintenance. Although there are limited choices for breakfast we found it was all tasty and made the decision easier. We were a little disappointed that staff were unhelpful with advice when my son's mobile was stolen and we needed help with a police report for our insurance. When we arrived one of our rooms was not made up as twin beds as we had booked and our airport transfer failed to show.

Room Tip: If you don't like stairs ask for one on lower floors.

couldnt believe how nice the room was for the price paid. beautifully clean, spacious, large bed, ensuite b/rm, aircon, modern tv, good internet ( with wifi router in room), great location - right in the backpacker area with loads of food/ drink/ shopping options. room was quite enough for me to sleep well. breakfast is simple, but very good options given the price of the room.
-ve
slight odour from bathroom, some small ants in room, many flights of stairs to climb to the room (not good for weaker walkers)

overall:
the staff were friendly, the room cleanliness and quality was great for the price. the small negative points didnt affect our stay. i would caution anyone who is not very mobile as there are lots of stairs to climb to the upper rooms.

Cat Huy is a great place to stay. The hotel is well placed, down a small alley between the busy Pham Ngu Lao and Bien Vu streets. Early in the morning the alleys are packed with locals turning them into a defacto market - very exciting and quite authentic. The hotel itself is very clean, well maintained and the staff friendly and informative. The rooms are quite spacious with comfy king size beds and overall, the impression is that Cat Huy offers a lot more than the price tag would suggest.
It is about a 20 minute walk to the Ben Than markets and once you've nailed the location of the hotel (a smartphone with google maps works as a great assistant!) is actually quite easy to find your way around.

Cat Huy is a great place for couples who want the convenience of the Pham Ngu Lao area, but want to steer clear of backpacker joints. I would definitely stay here again.

Yes there are stairs (we stayed on the 5th floor), and yes it is down an alley (which doubles as a morning food market), but Cat Huy is a gem. The staff here could not be nicer, especially Fang who works overnight. The rooms are clean, very big and well appointed. Everything works as required (safe, hair dryer, air con, kettle, TV, warm shower etc),the big bed is comfortable and the breakfast is good. If anyone complains about staying here they must have lost their grip on reality. For the price you pay it is excellent value and I would come back anytime and recommend it to all. The view from our room was great, the room was really quiet and the bars and restaurants of the backpacker area are close but not too close. PS Bus 50 drops you right at the end of the alley when traveling from the CBD and only costs 6 dong each.

Room Tip: ask for a low floor if you have issues with stairs.
