My friend and I arrived at Thien Thao shortly after midnight. Regardless of the ungodly hour, the lady at the reception still wore a smile and warmly welcomed us. The hotel itself is just a 10-minute walk away from the center and is very unassuming. It instantly won points for its cleanliness and friendliness of staff. Plus all of them--from the waiters to housekeeping--spoke good English. Our room did not disappoint and had everything we expected--from the cold A/C, strong shower with hot water, crisp bed linen and LCD TV. Included in the room rate was breakfast which offered delicious Vietnamese favorites as well as various Western dishes. WiFi in the lobby and in our room was incredibly fast. Perhaps the nicest touch was the helpfulness and attentiveness of the front desk staff who made arrangements for our onward journey to Cambodia--we just gave them the dates and they took care of the rest! Overall a very quaint hotel with a personal touch at fantastic value for money. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 205 faces the back street and is very quiet; only one small stained glass window.

We stayed at Thien Thao Hotel after re entering Ho Chi Minh City after a side trip to Bangkok. As we previously stayed in District 1 we thought we would stay in a different area.
Our front room was very spacious with a king size bed, TV, wifi, small fridge plus a generous seating area. The bathroom was large clean with toiletries supplied. Breakfast is included in the room rate. The staff were very pleasant and spoke good English.
Although we did not stay long, our room size in Thien Thao Hotel would be an excellent base for an extended stay in Ho Chi Minh City.
A great attraction of this hotel is the room rate, extremely reasonable for its features and location. Although, not in District 1 there is a bus stop close by with bus number 2 bus going the short distance to Ben Thanh Market and the centre of the city ( cost approx. 20c ).Taxi is also available at the door.

Room Tip: Room 601 was very spacious and although at the front of the Hotel the noise was not a problem. Room had air conditioning and large opening windows.

We paid 70 USD a night for interconnecting rooms (actually 2 rooms behind a third door, though this was fine). This was great value for the space we had. The hotel was professionally run and managed our pick up successfully (a task that most other places we stayed in Vietnam and Cambodia had failed with).

But it's still a budget place so there were a couple of things that wren't brilliant. Breakfast was a bit basic and we had a unfortunate near-coffee-spitting-out moment when we realized that this was brewed cold and then left to warm up. Trainee baristas anyone?

The only other criticism would be the location. My Ho Chi Minh geography is a bit basic but I think this is more District 3 than District 1. Fine if you don't mind a few cab rides, but perhaps it distorts the price a bit...

Room Tip: The connecting rooms were 401 and 402.

We loved this hotel. It is very nice, clean and cozy. It is truly a home away from home, the staff was great – helped us with everything, including tickets purchase and tours, and kept our things safely in the storage while we were on tours, they will accommodate you in the hotel after you come back from the trips. Rooms are simple but very nice and beautiful, bathrooms are impeccably clean and towels are absolutely white and fresh. Breakfast is pretty simple – eggs and toast. We liked the location because it is a couple of km away from District 1, so it was less noisy, but you will have to take a taxi if you want to go to the center of CHM.
We would like to thank all the people who recommended this hotel on Trip Advisor – we think that was a great choice for us. And thank you to the Hotel team for making our stay enjoyable experience.
A couple of tips to first travelers to Vietnam. The cheapest taxi is MaiLinh (for some reason Vinasun was always more expensive) – do not take any other taxi, they will cheat you. Be ware of the bicycle rickshaw – they will tell you it is only 15,000 VD for a ride, but will charge you 10 or 100 times as much. We were brought to a place with no people in close proximity and decided not to argue too much, since it seemed a bit dangerous, so we paid 150,000VD. A traveler told us that he was cheated to pay 1,500,000VD for a 10min rickshaw drive.
When you pay, watch how much you are giving to the vendor (especially in formal establishments), even say it out load, because they will take your money and will try to persuade you that you gave them different amount. Since many Vietnamese bills are similar in color and have so many 0000, it might be easy to get confused. For example, you give them 200,000 – they will tell you, you only gave them 10,000, since these 2 bills look similar. 500,000 is also similar with 20,000. We got cheated in the shop at Cu Chi tunnels (HCM) and in the Water Puppets Show theater (Hanoi).
Also, be careful on the streets – I was hit by a car that just drove away without slowing down.
And one last tip. Arrange all the travel within Vietnam in Vietnam – any Hotel or travel agency will be happy to purchase whatever tickets for any type of transportation, and arrange hotels in any city. If you do it on your own, it might be cheaper, but could be a lot of hassle. Also, do not stay in cheap hotels. We stayed in $15 room and were very disappointed (see our review of Phuong Hong in Rach Gia).

This hotel was excellent. The room was big, clean with comfortable beds. There was everything necessary in the room including complimentary water. The bath tub was amazing since it was very deep for a really great soak!
Breakfast had a good variety of items to choose from with extra fruit, coffee, bread and cheese to freely pick up on the counter.
The hotel is located about a 10 minute taxi ride from the sites such as the Re-unification Palace, Post Office, Notre Dame and the Ben Thanh Market. You can walk to the centre of the city in about 30 - 45 minutes.
We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Room Tip: Choose a room not on the street side. There is a cinema across the street which has very loud music starting in the late afternoon and going until around 22:00hrs. The quieter rooms are on the back side of the hotel.
