“Tasty!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Very extensive menu, all the way from abalone, sharks fin, frogs, snails, eel as well as chicken, pork, fish; once you make the choice...just enjoy the freshness and taste. the eel was crispy on the outside and moist inside, the snails were juicy not overcooked, native chicken a bit disappointing, fish soup with succulent chunks, spicy salad, dont forget the baked rice...all in all an excellent meal with good service. Highly recommended

“Expensive and NOT worth it”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

In late Dec '12, after we arrived in HCMC and checked in at our hotel, our extended family went to this restaurant for lunch based on a recommendation. After the meal, I left the place unimpressed and even regretful. We ordered multiple items, but none really stood out. In fact, their signature rice dish was too burned and too hard. Their whole chicken item on the menu came out with just a few pieces, and at an outrageously high price. Portion sizes for other items were also teeny (tiny), and all at inflated, tourist-exploited prices. Their rice bowl tossing act was okay, but forgettable and certainly not worth the premium prices of their food items. I gasped at our bill total of over 2 million dong (> $100 USD) for lunch! And we were not even full. We left unsatisfied in more ways than one. Coming to this restaurant was a mistake that I will not repeat.

I suggest skipping this restaurant for the many other more worthy restaurants in HCMC. Quan An Ngon and Lang Nuong Nam Bo come to mind... better food at more reasonable prices.

“Good food but lack of service.”

Food is quite nice with more than 50 dishes to choose from. Very tradition vietnamese food and contribute to the vietnamese food culture.

“Traditional Dishes”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2012

The restaurant is in District 3, that would be about 10 minutes by taxi from District 1. The menu is quite extensive. But would suggest that one stick to the portion under 'Traditional Dishes'. Some dishes like the pumpkin leaf and some of the salads may need getting used to if you are new to Asian food. But you are in Vietnam so try it out apart from the safe bet like spring roll. The mussels cooked in clay pot with lemon grass is a must try so is the steam rice in clay pot. This steam rice is different from the flying baked/grilled rice in clay pot you see in the TV food program. Try one order of it as it is crispy on the outside but sticky and chewy on the inside. The steam rice goes well with the Vietnamese dishes.
Ask for one lady Captain when placing order. She speaks good English and would suggest the dishes one should consider. I think it is a good starting place for traditional Vietnamese dishes. The place is well patronized by locals and they out numbered the tourist which speaks for itself. You will be more comfortable in the air conditioned area of the restaurant.

“Authentic!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2012

I first heard about this restaurant from a food/travel show featuring a renegade cook -turned-philosopher! He waxed lyrical about Vietnam in general and this restaurant in particular.
Well, the owner has gone and the next generation has stepped up. I am happy to say that the food must be as good as it always was. The various rooms and alcoves were full with locals and their families and friends all loudly enjoying the food. And it was good. The Vietnamese are not likely to be in these places unless the food itself is a good enough reason - and it was packed! I later found out that they have in fact opened a branch of this same restaurant nearer to the downtown tourist area and catering for the trade there! Someone please try it. I have no wish to. The spring rolls were the crispiest I had during my trip. The various salads and vegetable dishes were sincerely good. So good that the carnivours I travel with sent back every plate -cleaned!The crispy chicken was particularly noteworthy as the bird was not the tough old thing you normally see in vietnamese restaurants. Could it be frozen????
