“Good location.”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

Can imagine this once being a very prestigious hotel but that time has long gone. Still very clean and in a top location but just needs modernising to make it a great hotel. If you want a clean cheap room in a great location then this is a good choice. But if you want luxury go to the renaissance next door.

Not to be confused with the Riverside Renaissance Hotel just around the corner this hotel is definitely a bit more down to earth, but is generally just as well located (disregarding the busy street in front of it) - with all the highlights of the 1 district within easy reach. Although a bit bleary-eyed the staff was very helpful and friendly and had a good command of English, which was a pleasant surprise after a more pantomime heavy cab ride.
The heavy wooden and dusty furniture may note be of everyone's taste but the rooms were spacious and equipped with a TV offering a good choice of international channels. The lavish breakfast was perfect after a 12hrs flight - ranging from Vietnamese classics like the typical pho and some sort of stinky eggs to continental standards. It made us forget our neck-pain from the hard mattresses as well.

This place is tragic. Great location on the river front and a dump of a hotel. We were supposed to stay there for 4 nights but after the first night, we moved out. The first room that they gave us was in the back of the hotel over-looking the roof of the next door building. The room was dark and smelly (smokers and stall food). After agreeing to pay a considerable $$$$ upgrade amount - they moved us to a front of hotel river side room which was better but not great. We were on the 3rd floor and the hallways are dark, spartan and shabby. There were about 5 to 6 people behind the front reception desk when we arrived and every single one of them had the attitude of "I hate this job", "I hate this hotel" and "I could care less about you". The breakfast buffet at this hotel was the absolute worst we had in our two weeks in Viet Nam.

We booked a suite which has a large balcony in front of the room. We made this booking over the Tet holiday and asked if the Balcony would be only for us as we had booked the 2 bedroom suite as well as additional room for 6 adults and 3 children. We were guaranteed that the area would re reserved for us only and no way would anyone else be allowed into this area. We went to dinner and came back to watch the fireworks and to our dismay a crowd of 40-50 people we in our balcony area. I asked management to ask the people to leave and they refused to take any action as they had charged these people 300,000VND to come into this area to watch the fireworks. The balcony area is open area in front of 3 or 4 rooms which makes it accessible to others. I could see this happening and was the reason I checked with the management about this are being private but I feel like I was simply lied to. I have given the hotel management 5 days to respond to my verbal and email complaints but have heard nothing. I will say rooms are large but showing some age to the rooms. A little bit of TLC would go a logway here. There are better more honest hotels in the area. I would not stay here again as I believe in honesty and integrity. I would not have gone to the extra cost if I knew that the other people would be allowed into the area in front of my room. When I asked the people in the area why they were in this area was told that they had paid 300,000VND to get into this area.

We stayed here for 3 nights in early November 2012 in one of the Riverside Suites. A charming old hotel, that admittedly could use a bit of a face-lift particularly when it comes to furniture. Part of the charm, however, is the dated furniture so a bit torn on that front. The MASSIVE balcony off the Suite was spectacular with sweeping vistas over the riverfront. Location of the hotel is also really good. A great spread of food was available for breakfast. Staff were quite helpful and pleasant for the most part. Booked a private car to bring us to Cu Chi for a day. The woman working at the travel agency at the hotel was very friendly and helpful (and never made us feel pressured).
A few suggestions that could use a bit of attention:
1. Sent two pairs of pants and two dress shirts for ironing (no ironing board or iron in the hotel, so you have to pay to have things pressed) and it took more than 24 hours to get it back. A bit speedier would have been nice, but not the end of the world.
2. MASSAGE SCAM: The hotel offers a free 30 min massage (foot or body) with your room booking at its associated spa next door. Sounded great to our weary travellers' feet. We wandered over to the spa where we were met by a very aggressive woman who essentially refused to take our 30 min voucher unless we purchased a longer massage (e.g. 60 min body massage). We explained that we didn't want a longer massage, but she was very aggressive and adamant that we needed to buy a longer massage and that they couldn't devote 30 mins only to a massage. We felt extraordinarily uncomfortable (particularly given the spa's dodgy back-alley feel, so we left. We explained the experience to the hotel reception, who tried to set things right by calling the spa and sorting things out -- unfortunately we felt too uneasy about the whole thing and didn't imagine the massage being particularly relaxing with "one eye open". The hotel again tried to set things right by offering us a free 60 min massage each, but we again declined, thanking them for their efforts nonetheless. In fairness, they tried to make things right, but didn't understand our discomfort with returning to the spa.
All-in-all, a pleasant hotel though and we would stay there again (but would skip the spa). The room was a great price, great size, comfortable, and clean.

Room Tip: The River Suite is worth the extra money, especially if you've been travelling for a bit and fee...

This place is nicely located along the river, but the street in front is busy. It's close to the "downtown" area in districts one and there are many restaurants and bars around.
The hotel is old, and the rooms are old fashioned, the bathroom a bit tired. But then again you get what you pay for. If you are looking for a bargain, and can handle a bit of old style, this is your place.

I don't know how I missed some of these reviews, I think I got confused with Hanoi. This isNOT worth the money. It is old, small, extremely noisy and way overpriced. Location sucks because it is right on the ring road with traffic all night. Avoid at all costs.
