“gorgeous hotel w/ great service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013

river cruise down the makong w/ uniworld started here. fly in a day early. b & b $ gold silk 190 and worth every penny. walking into the hotel i faced a huge xmas tree in a bright and cheerful lobby. the desk staff were helpful and efficient. my room was an enormous suite w/ white walls, dark wood and soft golden silk decor. restful. sofa, 40" flat screen and comfortable king size bed. fresh fruit in jackets (to prevent illness) a welcome treat. large balcony overlooking pool. provided soothing views of the lake and colourful sun rises and sunsets. even the rain was warm.

front desk provided a taxi who drove me to the silk market. the driver accompanied me and translated. a great help. silk sellers warm and friendly. no pushy sales people. heads up: no fitting rooms. bought a long dress, short dress, trousers and top in high quality silk for under $100. driver took me back to hotel. w/ generous tip taxi and driver for half day about $30.

breakfast buffet to die for. huge islands of fresh fruit and breads. really liked jaq fruit and dragon fruit. buffet offered american and vietnamese delights. fresh omelette bar. i had pho every morn, but i live in vancouver where oriental food abounds, great pho! if you like starbucks -- try vetnamese coffee. dark and delicious. buffet served in spacious room overlooking the lake. so big i forgot where i'd sat the first morn. very pleasant. staff attentive.

front desk provided money exchange (no fee), mailed postcards, and gave helpful service and directions. walked around hotel and found a temple complex (across from front driveway) where the natives practiced tai chi in the morn. bring camera. hotel highly reccommended.

Room Tip: room in main hotel quiet and spacious

I got the worst massage ever!!!! Don't try the hotel spa!!! It was cold!! You could hear people speaking outside the massage room! The woman of the massage was horrible so uncomfortable definitely the worst massage I ever got and had to pay over 50 dollars for that!!! Very disappointed decently the worst spa I ve ever been!

We stopped in Hanoi in order to take a day trip to Halong Bay.

The location of the hotel is nice in terms of being on the lake. It's approximately 40 mins from the airport. It only took us a little over a couple of hours to get to Halong Bay, even though the guides suggest it's 3.5 hours. The traffic wasn't busy when we went, it was the (lunar) new year, so that may have helped.

The room is a little small but adequate and whilst we had a decent size balcony overlooking the lake there was no furniture, not even a chair, to enjoy the views from.

The room was also short of some toiletries (inc., shower gel) which was annoying as the first thing I wanted after a 15 hour (door to door) trip was a nice hot shower. Some was sent quite promptly after calling down.

Our room rate included Internet access and so I found it very disappointing to have to call down each day for an access code (rather than be given one on check in) and the wifi was at best patchy and worked only 50% of the time due to signal issues. The staff did mention that the coverage maybe poor in our particular room, which begs the question as to why we were given that room if the room rate we chose included wifi... Wifi access code and predictable signal coverage is something this hotel should look into as part of their standard process when checking someone in!

The quality of food for in room dining is poor. Our food arrived in a timely manner but was cold and generally of poor quality.

The quality of the food in the restaurants was quite ok to good and the staff we found to be helpful and courteous.

I took a massage each of the days I was here and they were excellent. There's also a nice sauna and steam room to use before/afterwards.

So overall this is generally a good quality hotel, let down by first impressions .....within 1 hour of arriving needing to mess around getting a shower, accessing the Internet and eat cold food. Without this first hour it would certainly be at least 4 stars.

You have to love Hanoi - it's chaotic, confusing, noisy and never seems to change. If you have 2 nights or more, the Westlake is a great choice. It's just a few minute's cab ride from old town, but another world altogether - this resort style hotel is built over the lake and offer spacious rooms, reasonably priced meals and simply excellent service. Staff are clearly getting direction from management and they seem to anticipate your needs before being asked. The rooms in the main building seem brighter than those in the pavilions (we stayed in both). The staff at the Sunset Bar handled our private party beautifully - kudos to them! I was surprised to read that one of the reviewers found the rates expensive - prepay a breakfast-included rate well in advance and I doubt you'll pay anymore than any of the major hotels. We'll be back, and we'll be recommending this property to our clients.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building are brighter, but those in the pavilions are quieter.

I stayed only one night but the price is really to high for the city of hanoi, the price list must be modified including a lot of not included services. No wify in the room, consequently all the people are in the lobby for internet.

Very croweded.

They have the name for justifying the price, only this.

I stayed at this hotel on Business Trip in 2012. I spent three nights and it was a fantastic stay in a very luxurious bedroom and bath overlooking the water. The only thing I would caution is that night bats fly around when you are walking back to your room though some people may find that part of the ambiance lol. Their fitness room is also outstanding.

Spent two nights staying here and we were not disappointed at all once staffs met all our requests. Our room(Juinor Suite) was incredibly modern, spacious and excellent view. The room with private way, balcony and staffs could set us a private dinner at the balcony and you will have a romantic moment at dinner with your darling. The manager of travel who also would recommend us an excellent trip to Halong Bay on A Clasd Opera Cruise. Intecontinental, the best hotel in Hanoi and we would recommend it!
