Stayed at the hotel just before New Years on the New Years special - 220 but there's a lot of tax - its 253 before you're done. The place is sparking new, modern with VN touches. Bathroom was huge, towels soft, very clean. The staff was extremely attentive, but...

...as with most service personnel throughout North VN, the English was sometimes poor - again, something you should expect better from an Intercontinental, anywhere.

The hotel had too many mosquitoes for a 5 star place though - and please don't say it's on the water so you should expect that, you should NOT expect it from any 5 star. The bedspread had stains on it, and it was NOT replaced the next day. I went to the business center to look at ratings on Hanoi restaurants - they said it was US$ 10 per hour to use the internet! Most VN hotels, even those under US$ 50 per night, have free internet. In this day and age, to charge for internet, and then to charge US$ 10 / hour, is absolutely unacceptable. The English barrier came into play again when I ordered breakfast - I called first to ensure that someone would pick up the order from the door knob, then I hung it on the door, and they still called me up to ask if I had hung it up. When they brought they food, they had brought twice the order because they misread the order form.

Finally, the earlier poster said 5-10 minutes onto the city. This is misleading in my opinion: the speed limit is 25km/h in the city, and they don't drive much faster than that (though they sure honk their horns all the time). It is an extra 15-20 minutes you need to plan into your schedule to get down into the Hoan Kiem area. There is not a whole lot for a tourist around the hotel, so every trip is an extra 15-20 minutes.

Overall the hotel itself is fantastic, the staff is extremely nice but there are serious English language problems for a 5 star, they need to eliminate the mosquito problem, and they need to come into the 19th century and stop charging outrageous prices for internet. I probably would not go back, however, as I feel I was ripped off, even at the discounted rate. The Hilton Hanoi and the Metropole are similarly priced room-wise, I will stay there next time if not one of the 3-stars that are actually good enough and substantially better valued.

I travel to Hanoi every month and I must say that this is for me the best hotel now. Great rooms 43 sqm (book the Westlake view) with private balcony. The French Restaurant Cafe du Lac is overlooking the Westlake and you feel like on vacation so peacefull. Frendly service and the Diplomat Lounge has every night Piano music. Built on waters the hotel is just 5-7 minutes drive to the city - a new must hotel in Hanoi!! Regards, Thomas
