Let's start from one concept: if a restaurant is proposing in its menu "Pasta e fagioli" (pasta with kidney beans) which is one of the most famous and preferred courses by Italian people then you can be sure that it is a real Italian restaurant.
Mediterraneo is owned and managed by real Italians: Leonardo and Martina, respectively the owner and the responsible for the service, were outstanding for the way they welcomed us and the suggestions about what to eat, especially in the choice among the courses of the day. Food was very good and the selection of wines was quite vast.
I went there for two evenings in a row and my kids who are very picky were really enthusiast about the food offered by Mediterraneo.
If you want to take a break from the Vietnamese cuisine and you are in Hanoi then Mediterraneo should be your preferred option!
It is advisable to book in advance since the restaurant is quite crowded in the evening.

Had frusilli with spinach and speck,

It was perfect! Honestly.

Pizza - tomato cheese and ham,

So good, base was perfect and came with Chili oil! Made it all the better!

Lovely restaurant, and staff were very pleasant!

The atmosphere was dull and the place was a bit cold. The food was alright and uninspired. And as others have noted the place was overpriced.

Had a very nice dinner at the upstairs balcony overlooking the street action which is never dull in Hanoi. The bell sound from the nearby old church made it extra special. Too bad the smokers come out to the balcony but we were almost finished by then. A beautiful tenderloin and green salad before that. Wine and entrees are reasonably priced. Espresso and tiramisu made for an uplifting experience. Would love to go back and try a few more dishes.
Unlike other comments on this website, we found nothing wrong with the service.

Italian Restaurant managed by Italians (Italians printing the bills, local vietnamese cooking) near the Hanoi Cathedral. What to say...You get a Trattoria style place (ie no luxury, very simple and home style) with 2 floors and few tables. Service is just horrible, with local vietnamese people seriving the diners, arguing with clients and completely not professional. We had wood fired pizza and it was very good. However the setting, the service and the overall quality does not justify the price, which is too high. Also, on the pizza, we got the feeling they save on the quantity of ingredients, despite the high price (all pizzas are above 10-15 USD). Wine list is completely overpriced and is mostly made up by mass producer wines (Ruffino, Antinori...), better get a bier instead. A suggestion for the restaurant manager: hire trained and experience staff, add more ingredients on the pizzas and improve the wine list with small local high quality labels. For the bad service and treatment we had it should be a 1 star only, but the owner saw us dissatisfied and offered us a glass of liquerice liquor free of charge at the end of our diner. This is why we uplifted it. If you want a good pizza real Italian style in Hanoi, that's the good place for you, but mind the service will be terrible and the bill not that friendly.
