We (backpacking couple) stayed here between Dec 22 and Dec 25 2012, with a one night Halong Bay trip in the middle.

The point of staying here was somewhere cheap that would organize the bay trip for us. In the end we were treated very well, and all of our needs were carefully met.

The entire trip was booked from the hotel, and in speaking to others, we were about the median price paid, and didn't feel ripped off at all. Food was excellent on the boat, and all accommodations were as expected.

We stayed in a $12 room, and it was What we expected it to be. Yes there were no windows, but there's nothing to see anyway. We stayed in the room to sleep only and for that it was quiet, clean and comfortable. The hot water and air conditioning both worked with no problems and we were supplied ample toiletries and clean towels on request.

We used laundry services at the hotel, and found them to be quick and fairly priced. The breakfast served was a very nice bonus, and was hot, plentiful and served with a smile.

The best part of our stay here was that the hotel threw a Christmas party on Dec 24, with free food and booze. The owner, his family, and all of the staff were there with the guests and we partied until the wee hours of the morning. The hotel was VERY generous with alcohol, and everyone had a wonderful time. The highlight was seeing all of the staff in the morning, all bright smiling and professional. They would all give a little wink or hand shake in remembering the previous night. I felt very comfortable at this hotel and very welcome. All staff treated us well, and all requests were dealt with quickly and with a smile.

I would happily stay in this hotel in the future and felt it was very good value for our money. It also provided very unique memories an a warm family atmosphere for our time in Hanoi.

We initially went to friendly backpackera across the road but then were brought to elizabeth hotel as that's where the double rooms are. The room we had was small with no windows. It was clean with a good sized bathroom and fridge but the drains in the bathroom stank a bit. Overall an ok place to stay.

It's a tough one rating this place so all I can do is go straight down the middle on all accounts.

So the rooms are ok, not the cleanest but by no means filthy! The beds were fine and the bathroom was actually decent apart from when we turned on the sink tap the smell was a bit horrific! Still no idea what the hell that was!

The breakfast was ok, buffet style with a bit of variety but to be honest cold fried eggs are not exactly mouth watering! It's better than some hotel breakfasts in Hanoi so it's not all bad!

the location is ok for central old quarter and to get to the lake so can't complain about that!

The guys in here seem to be able to speak decent English so getting any points across shouldn't be a problem! Make sure when you're checking out (if you book with hostelbookers) that they take the 10% off your bill! Not sure if this was an oversight but they didn't at first even though I'd asked if they had! (lucky I still hady email with my final balance on)

The Internet worked well downstairs but in our room on the second floor it was very weak and kept going off!

All in all I'd say this was average at best, a pretty mundane place, you will certainly get cheaper and better accomodation in hanoi's old quarter! You just have to look about!

We stayed at this hotel a few days and thought the staff were nice, but Mr King (very good talker, seemed quite hospitalble and very good english) is a pretty smooth talker. He recommended to do 3 days and 2 nights in Halong Bay but we wanted the middle class tour (Superior) as Luxury being the highest and Deluxe being the lowest. As we are travelling for 1 year I insisted that money is more important than splashing out but King talked us into going onto his 'friends' boat, a new business he is helping him to start up so for an extra USD22 each he said we could do his friends boat, with a nice bbq dinner and a new boat. The price we wanted to pay was $143 per person for the Superior boat that was the hotel endorsed boat. King even said his boss would come to the hotel to personally say sorry if anything went wrong...

We packaged this with the Sapa tour of 4 nights and 3 days so we thought we were getting a good deal.

Until we saw the boat!!! We couldn't believe it was a 'Luxury' boat, with peeling white paint on the exterior!. The boat itself seemed ok for a Superior or middle level but not the 'Luxury' we were expecting (and now we found out that Luxury should mean you get a balcony attached to your room too!). We were put on the bottom level under the restaurant part, there was no bar fridge or even a powerpoint to charge our camera, and the bathroom soon became flooded from leaking down the side of the shower.

If we were told a middle level we would have been happy, as all the others in our tour group were sold a middle level, but we had to pay more to have the same as the others was pretty annoying!!!

Of course when we returned from our trip (which was amazing and we don't regret going of course!!!), King told us his boss would be coming in the afternoon aroun 2 or 3 pm as he was in hospital for his mother at the moment. Upon our phone call and return to the hotel to meet the boss neither were to be found and we were told the boss mother had died.

When the other staff member called his mobile phone he seemed annoyed at our heartlessness and told us we would discuss it after our Sapa trip.

Sapa was amazing and beautiful but we still had a sour taste in our mouths and mental rage going on but we didn't want to ruin our sapa trip.

We returned to the hotel expecting King to dodge us again, but he was fully prepared to refute his sale and that he had told us everything was legitimate and that others on the boat had been upgraded to luxury when we told them everyone else had been sold superior.

So it seems he had a backup story for everything and talked his way out of returning our money back.

As others in our trip had been told - don't do luxury with this hotel, or make sure the travel agent is reputable and is not 'a friend' or boss!!! Or at least a luxury level boat needs to have a balcony which is the true proof of value for money!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although the hotel might look chique from a distance, don't be fooled. The people that run the place can be very rude and aggressive for no reason at all.

Me and my girlfriend used the hotel lobby bathroom to freshen up after a hot day in Hanoi. Afterwords the young receptionist started swearing at me saying this was a hotel, not a marketplace. Apparently our flip-flops made some mud stains on the wet bathroom floor and that pissed him off so badly that he got very aggressive with me and (not so kindly) requested us to leave the hotel immediately.

We were flabbergasted and still, after a few days, we see no reason why we were treated so rude by this person. The lobby bathroom, like most bathrooms in Vietnam, was not the tidiest place in the hotel anyways and it was hard to tell which of the many stains on the floor were ours. It seems like he just felt like being aggressive and unreasonable and we happened to be close by.

If we hadn't left immediately i believe it could easily have escalated. We tried to talk to the guy, but there was no arguing with him and we were afraid he might get physical aggressive so we left.

Our advise: Don't go here if you you want to enjoy the wonderfull city of Hanoi and the lovely people that live here.

This old, dirty lookin' hotel was "recommended" by the travel agent we used in Hue. The guy showed us a picture of the double room with windows and told us it was 12USD. He also said that the driver wold pick us up at the bus station and we could take a loo at the rooms first before we decide. We double confirmed this with the motorbike driver who was picking us up at the bus station and he also said that we could decide after we check out the rooms,

HOWEVER...after a long and dangerous ride to the hotel, we found out that the room (double) was not available at the time and were to wait 30 minutes till people check out, so they showed us a single which was small, dirty, old and moldy. As we were leaving, the double room was spared and unfortunately it was just as dirty and disappointing. So we asked the guy to show us the room with a window as the picture demonstrates and he quoted a new price of 18. We expressed our feeling about their false advertising and he told us to leave. His exact word were "I don't want you here, get out." His name is Bo ( or something like that).

As we were leaving, Bo called out the motorbike driver and harassed us for money for the ride from the bus station. We totally saw this coming and refused to pay them anything.

DO NOT stay there or use any of their services if the advise from us. They also go by the name "Friendly backpacker hostel".
