we were recommended by a friend as we wanted a private guide and to tailor make our trip
Billy met us in Hanoi, took us to the hotel, plenty of time to relax, then off on a walk a street tour food tasting, puppet theatre etc. He was so helpful, we tried local fruit, egg coffee. very knowledgeable.plenty of time with a guide, plenty of time by ourselves. Just when we were getting tired he found a hotel that had a pool we could relax by before the night train. little thoughtful touches.
we tailor made our trip, the company were helpful and made suggestions the whole way. not the cheapest, not the most expensive. But worth it for complete relaxation that it was all organised. I forgot contact lenses, billy took me to get more. nothing is a problem.
great company, great itinerary, great guides, recommend. pay by amex for your peace of mind.

Mr Linh delivered what we were hoping for. Perfect organization, with flexibility. We were two couples (ending up in a minivan for 11, so plenty of space and very comfortable journey. If you are heading north, you'll have many hours in the car. Hence, if they tell you that a large car is needed (slightly more expensive), it makes a big difference.
We wanted to visit both Ba Be lake and go to the North Vietnam (Cao Bang - Ha Giang). Usually, the Cao Bang - Ha Giang loop from/to Hanoi takes 3 days, and we thought that we could do Ba Be as well since we had one day more. They were hesitant saying that time would be short, and that it would involve a lot of driving and early rises. The solution they offered was what we wanted.
The first day, we went from Hanoi to Ba Be. We stayed at Mr Linh's homestay. The family is from Ba Be, hence it makes sense to have a homestay there.
Side note about homestays. I was expecting to stay with families and discuss with them. It turned out that all homestays are tourist-oriented. I don't blame them, they do that for a living. But you end up with other tourists. Hence there are very limited exchanges with local people. Some homestays have individual rooms with AC, others like big dorms, and you sleep on the floor. Bathrooms are shared. I don't mind rough travel, but I would have enjoyed more being the sole travelers with a family to share meals with them and talk. This may be the case, when you really go off the beaten track. I am not sure that Mr Linh provides it. But if you are into that, you can ask them. They may arrange it. In any case, as the north is a must-go place for many travelers, it is not a surprise that homestays developed to accommodate several travelers at the same time. Bottomline, homestays was not what I expected, but this is the way they developed it, and it works.
Back to the trip and Ba Be. The lake is beautiful, surrounded by forests. Is it worth spending time there? Retrospectively, we thought it was not necessary to go there. We spent one night there, and in the morning went with a small boat along the river to the cave. The trip is nice, but not that nice (a long drive for a short stay). I guess that it becomes interesting when you are trekking in the forest.
If you want to combine Ba Be and the North, I would advise a longer trip. Otherwise, skip Ba Be (this what they told us beforehand, and they were right).
Note: you may think that they want to push you to take their organized trip. They are experienced, and they know how long it takes to go from one place to the other. In the North, distances are short, but travel times are VERY long.
The North. This was a really great experience. The landscape is breathtaking. I won't spoil it. See it for yourself :-) It was just what we wanted to see.
Don't miss the small trek they propose in the gorge, below the cliff. The boat trip in the gorge itself may be nice, but the trek takes through small minority communities, and the view up there is spectacular. It is not difficult, except for the heat ...
A word about the people on board.
The driver (Mr Long) and the guide (Mr Lei) were fantastic. They are friends, and they have done many trips together. The atmosphere was very relaxed. Mr Long was very careful, a safe driver. Mr Lei (not sure about the spelling) was very kind and very knowledgeable. They were really there to accommodate our whims, which were limited to say stop in the middle of nowhere to take a picture, or to go and see people working in the rice fields.
A word of caution though. If you see a stand alone mike in the car (usually kind of golden plated), be careful. This is a mike-amplifier-loudspeaker all--in-one, that you can connect via Bluetooth to any device, like a cell phone. And Mr Linh has a play list of songs from all countries ... thus we ended up singing karaoke with the cell phone during the trip ... You'd better be in tune. Both love karaoke, and they'll often sing Vietnamese songs (better than the radio). If we happened to stop in a karaoke restaurant, they would go and sing. That was fun.
Note: the tip at the end is customary: minimum 5$/day for the guide, and half for the driver (don't tip the same, it would be insulting to the guide).
Finally, in the north the minorities are very poor, in particular in the mountains. Children go around naked. Mr. Lei and his wife (a school teacher) collect clothes and distribute them during the winter. Mr. Lei knows the people in the North. If he is your guide, ask beforehand if you can buy clothes in a market in Hanoi to give away.
Alternatively, buy lots of cookies to distribute.
In conclusion, highly professional and perfect organization. And more importantly, it did not feel at all like a "product". It was more like a good company traveling together.
And for this, thank you Lei and Long.

Dear Christophe, what a great review thank you so much. Very fair and true, we highly appreciate it.
Your point regarding the homestay is indeed worth mentioning, we work with different families who run their houses in various ways. For some, dinners will be shared altogether in a very simple way, and others will be more service-minded and try to answer to your every need.
The whole team is touched by your kind words, and we will make sure to pass your review along to Lei and Long, your dynamic duo! We hope to see you again someday in our wonderful country.
Many thanks,

We experienced the breath-taking views of Halong Bay with the day tour organized by Mr. Linh's Adventures. At the Hanoi Office, Helen and Nam were very professional, they explained the several options we had and helped us select our tour. Our small group, consisted by 10 travelers plus our great tour guide Eric and our driver, started off from Hanoi by mini van and it took not more than 2 hours to get to the area of Halong Bay. Our tour guide was very informative, witty and helpful in every detail with very good English. The tour was well organized, the meal was good (fresh fish and a selection of finger food) but the scenery was everything! One should be actually there to experience the magnificence of this place. A big thank you to the staff of Mr. Linh's Adventures! We will surely be back some day!

After several weeks I have now decided to write a detailed review of my personal experience with a local travel company in Vietnam, Mr Linh’s Adventures. They have provided me with the best trip of my life and the greatest experience and customer service I could have hoped for. It is only fair that I support them in return.

With my boyfriend we have decided to undertake a multi-day trip through Vietnam and Cambodia last spring, our first time in Asia. After a long time researching online, we chose Mr Linh’s Adventures based on the great recommendations they have and the interesting tours they offer.
They helped us customize our itinerary and save on cost at the same time by offering us to join multiple group tours. The organisation was absolutely perfect and the team was always available to answer our questions before and during the tour.

Here are the tours we booked, including our own opinion on each, hoping it will give some ideas to another traveler:

NORTH VIETNAM:
Sapa – Well-known for its terraced rice fields, it did not disappoint in terms of landscapes. However I would not recommend staying in the city centre, it lacks of authenticity due to tourism. For a very cheap taxi ride, you can stay with the locals in neighbouring villages and have the most wonderful view from your window. We met and chatted with Hmong and Day ethnic minorities and watched them planting rice. A very special memory for us.
From the city centre, one of the greatest attractions is the Fansipan summit, the ‘Roof of Indochina’. We took the cable car to reach the top, the views are stunning and the whole experience was worth the entrance fees (800.000 VND).

Hagiang – A great experience for trekking, between terraced rice fields and mountains, you feel very privileged in this remote place. Trekking through Ma Pi Leng pass was beautiful, you also get to meet with the Black Hmong, a very traditional ethnic minority with women and children dressed in traditional colourful clothes.

Ban Gioc Waterfalls/Ba Be National Park – The absolute greatest experience! So perfect in each point of view: amazing scenery between the waterfall and the park, so private and heavenly, overnight in homestays with great families, tasty food, entertaining and instructive guide. Just amazing!

CENTRAL VIETNAM:
Danang, Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge – Fun for the cable car ride, it offers good views but besides this I would not recommend it. It is a theme park mainly meant for Vietnamese people, the visit was not as expected.

Hoi An – A short two-day visit but rich of experience! This town is so well-preserved and a very interesting mix of cultures. We spent our time cycling and walking into the Old Town, took the most wonderful pictures and really enjoyed ourselves in this international city.

CAMBODIA:
We had a few days left in Hanoi and wanted to enjoy our time to a maximum. Since Mr Linh’s Adventures did not disappoint so far, we decided to trust them with their extension of 2 days to Siem Reap to visit Angkor. Obviously the temples were mind-blowing, incredible feelings while walking there. We did one large part of the complex cycling which was perfect between Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat. I must say, even though we were tired and nearly missed it, the last temple on our list, Ta Prohm, was the most spectacular. It is built in the jungle and nature has taken over the stones, tree roots growing all over them. Breathtaking.
Siem Reap in itself is not really interesting, mainly built to welcome the tourists visiting the temples.
We took a boat trip on Tonlé Sap Lake, one of the biggest freshwater lakes of the region, connected to the Mekong River. We went during dry season so the effect was very lessened by the lack of water. Pick the right time of year if you plan on spending a few days in Siem Reap, there is much more to see after rain season.

Believe it or not this is a very short summary of our adventure! Thank you so much Mr Linh’s Adventures for your commitment, we appreciated every minute of it and are happy to recommend your services!

Mr Linh’s excursion “Off the beaten tracks” is a trip appropriately named. Our summary of the excursion was excellent and as all life’s adventures, it did have some pros and cons.

The good stuff:
- A true deep and rich experience. Discover who the peoples of northern Vietnam are, how they live and work.
-Incredible topography and the opportunity to see it close up by hiking, boating, spelunking, and kayaking.
-A great guide ( Loi ) with flexibility to change the day instantly based on what our wishes and what was available to see that day. He adapted well with every change up request. He started everyday with a good plan and a smile.
-Our driver ( Lon ) who was safe, fun and always watching out for what he could do. He and Lon are a great team.
-Comfortable vehicle
-Homestay at Heavenly Homestay was five star. A unique cottage with opportunity to walk around the village and eat with the family. The balance was just right.
-Mr. Linh’s Homestay was very good for both location and comfort.
-Cathy at Mr Linh’s. She is a valuable resource for setting up excursions and even helping us with the visa application. Always timely in her communications. A star.

The misses
- Several long days in the vehicle. Although the actual distances between stops were not huge, it takes nearly the entire day to accomplish the travel on rough and serpentine roads. Two days were unbalanced as to time in the car vs activities.
- The hotel in Sapa missed the marked. It was a bit eerie - a 7 story hotel nearly empty.
- One of the three Homestays, the second Homestay of the trip was barely friendly in my opinion, It was authentic and primitive, for sure.
Overall we would conclude the excursion as a great experience and definitively met our goal of discovering northern Vietnam.

We recently travelled from the North to South Vietnam over 13 days with a private tour guide throughout. We had booked our flights and had some idea of what we wanted to see but contacted Mr LInh Adventures who came up with an itinerary to suit and it was all brilliant. We had a local tour guide at each area we traveled starting with Billy who met us at Hanoi airport and whose knowledge and friendliness was great and a perfect start to our welcome in to Vietnam. We had the highlights of Hanoi in 1 day and then followed on to Lan Ha Bay for an overnight cruise with Calypso then met the following day and drove to Ninh Binh for an overnight stay and then a day in the Tam Coc countryside before boarding an overnight train (met by next guide Hoa, to Phong Nha and spending a day at the national park (zip wire, dark cave, mud bath and paradise cave) over night at the lake house and then a day travelling to Hue via the Vinh Moc tunnel and crossing North to South. Next day greeted by Long and a day around Imperial Citadel, tombs, local market overnight in Hue and then on to Elephant Springs, Golden Bridge in Ba Na Hills and on to Hoi An. Next day met by Miss Phuong with a day round the local Tra Que Village on bikes (stunning local area) and then she accompanied us the next morning to DaNang airport. Met in Ho Chi Minh by Chin who accompanied us around Ho Chi Minh City, the following day to Mekong Delta and last day to Cu Chi Tunnels. The itinerary was action packed each day but with very informative local guides giving you the best out of your limited travel time and lunch was included where they booked you in to the local restaurants that they recommend and had some lovely local specialty foods. Don't feel we would have been able to see anywhere near as much had we tried to arrange things ourselves individually and also had the knowledge that they were their to assist with any problems that may occur. We had a fantastic trip and wouldnt hesitate to use again if and when we return to visit Vietnam as there is still so much to see. Ideally 3 weeks would be good to include Sapa, 2 nights on cruise at Halong Bay, more time in Hoi An for leisure time and beach (such a pretty area).

Dear Elaine,
Thank you very much for your kind words, we appreciate you took the time to post a review.
With your limited time with us you selected a great tour to see the main attractions of our beautiful country. You are right to highlight the fact that without a guide, your experience would have been different. They are indeed here to clear your mind during your holiday, and allow you to simply enjoy the sites without thinking of the next steps.
We still have many surprises in store if you ever come back!
Looking forward to seeing you again someday.
