“Party Place”
Reviewed October 26, 2010

I had a good time here and the location is pretty sweet too.
Breakfast was pretty sweet and they offered tones of things to do and trips. but it's one of those way super huge hostels where you kind of feel like a number. and the packages they offer on the whole are pretty fun but you can tell it's a cash grab.

I had a TONE! of fun on the halong bay trip but it was mostly gap year kids looking to party and get drunk. Fun but not for everyone.

rooms were good,
breakfast, standard,
free wi-fi and computers which was super useful
the boos i booked with them from Hanoi to Laos was the worst ride of my life.

NEVER EVER NEVER! take the bus from Hanoi to Laos! the bus drivers were violent to the passengers, herding and yelling at everyone like cattle, there was a fist fight on the bus with one of the drivers who slapped one of the girl passengers. and so much more. this shouldn't reflect the hostel which was which was a real good stay but i did buy the tickets from them and from what i hear, this one bus rout is always like this.

Everyone at the Hostel was great! They were very helpful and gave lots of tourist info for the area. The Halong Bay boat tour and over night stay on the Island was so much fun! I Highly recommend everyone do it.

I found this hostel to be quite clean and a good place for meeting fellow travellers. There was quite the motley crue in our room! The hostel is well organised in that there are places to leave your bag if you are going on one of their trips and you can also lock your bag under your bed while you are staying in the hostel. Our air con kept switching off and trying to report this to the staff and solicit their help was a nightmare. It made me wonder if they were trying to save on electricity! It always got sorted eventually though. There was an excellent atmosphere around the place. I often find in Asia that I end up staying in hotels because it is affordable and I have to say it was nice to have the opportunity to bunk in with lots of other people and make friends!

This was to be the first place we stayed in on our backpacking tour of SEA. We had booked it before landing in Hanoi. When we arrived the room was not ready, and were told to wait 30 minutes. After an hour we guessed we had been forgotten about, and asked another person for our room. She showed us to the room. It was quite disappointing. One bed, one AC unit, and 2 metres of space in which to swing a cat. Communal showers - which was not mentioned in the booking. Thereafter the staff seemed uninterested in our requests, unless booking a tour. The staff are unprofessional, and either don't speak english, or are partying the whole time. Some man kept opening our locked door in the middle of the night and then closed it when he saw we were in the room, not sure what that was about. Further this was the most expensive place we stayed in on our whole trip. What a rip-off. I am sure that for half the price you could find something better. Not sure why this place is so highly rated?

at $6.00 per person per night in a dorm room, we expected more from this hostel (especially as it had been recommended to us by everyone we'd met in the lead up to hanoi). unfortunately we were disappointed with the room which was cramped, dark and dirty. we found that $6.00 can go quite far in hanoi, and moved to a lovely hotel a few doors down for the same price (and a luxurious private room!). despite this, hanoi backpackers can't be faulted for their excellent travel advice, and the rooms do come with a perk of free breakfast. we went on the halong bay trip organised by this hostel, which was fantastic!

This hostel is great, good free breakfast and clean rooms with a wonderful location and generally everything was pretty cheap. Free wifi too, and a good happy hour with occasional free kegs. The only problem you have here is language barriers - all the staff appear to speak english but there were a few screw ups with our stay but just make them repeat what you've told them and watch it get written down and you should be fine. Its a great place to meet people and the halong bay tour they do is entirely worth it - you meet loads of people - as long as you're happy to get drunk and naked!
There's also a lot of info about getting around Hanoi and I'd generally recommend this place :)

Stayed in the female eight-bed ensuite dorm. Bathroom was small but okay.

There's a restaurant and free internet, but not as fast compared to internet cafes in HCMC. They offer tour assistance too but i suggest you ask tour rates from other guest houses and compare the prices (i wouldn't know as i didn't check). I did my own Ha Long Bay tour and was of course much cheaper.

This hostel is in the backpackers area of Old Quarter with stores you can buy essentials from. The common room is a great place to socialize.

One thing i didn't like so much about Hanoi Backpackers is how far it is from Hanoi Train Station. Ask fellow travellers when socializing in the living room if they're travelling via the train. You will find people who are willing to travel with you a kilometer from the hotel (it's near St. Joseph's Cathedral and behind Hoan Kiem Lake).

One of the highlights of my trip to Vietnam is my stay here. I've made new friends who travelled with me via the Reunification Express to HCMC and i still have contact with them to this day. Staff speaks good english and very accommodating.
