This hostel was great. We were greeted with smiles and were well cared for in the midst of tons of other backpackers making their way in and out. The tour of Halong Bay was fabulous and all that it claimed to be. The free breakfast was good, but we walked a block away for better coffee. Free wifi and several computers to use. The atmosphere was fun and friendly. We made great friends and found fun places to eat and great sights to see just around the corner.

I switched to the Hanoi Backpackers Hostel with a newfound travel buddy from a boat trip after the budget hotel I had been at had mold on their ceiling... If I stayed for more than one night it would have been a great place to meet people. Excellent location, free computers with internet in the lobby, but they're often busy. Connecting restaurant/bar looked good but I didn't go. However the room we ended up in, which had computer beds with locking lockers underneath... the showers were soooo tiny it was quite uncomfortable to move around in. I'd ask to see the room you're being placed in as apparently there are dorms with more than one shower and twice the size. (I was at "The Other Side")

If you wanna hang out with other travellers this is the place to stay in Hanoi. I would definitely recommend others to stay here - especially solo travellers.
It's a bit expensive, so if you thirsty for beers; find some friends at the hostel during the happy hour from 17-18 and go to the 3000 dong beer place - it's brilliant :)
I wouldn't recommend their trips to Halong Bay - they're very expensive compared to others tour companies (They charge you 109US$ for 3 days/2nights whereas you pay about 80US$ for a simular trip other places).

Great social life, happy hour, tour bookings (the Ha Long Bay tour is awesome), flight bookings, and actual dorms makes this a great place to meet people and feel well looked after!

This was our first stop during our travels and they definitely made it worth it.
During our stay with them we stayed in a private double with a shared bathroom, a private double ensuite and a 12 person dorm room. We had no problems with any of the rooms.

They have a great desk staff and you can book everything through them. We ended up having a problem with one of our bus bookings and the hostel not only refunded us for the tickets, but comped us two beds in the dorm and then a free car to the airport the next day for our troubles. If you have any problems as to talk to Peter - he really helped us out.

It you're interested in meeting other travelers, it's a fantastic location to meet other travelers. They have a bar on the first floor and a rooftop bar.
If you can, make sure to book in advance! They were fully booked almost everynight we were there.

Way to expensive for what you get, so we stayed directly opposite and got an air-con room with TV etc for the same price we would have paid in the dorm. The Halong Bay trip was fun, but not worth it. After losing two girls on the canoeing trip the 19yr old English "guide" told me later he didn't give a toss and they weren't his responsibility.

We booked our train tickets to Sapa through them because we were told by them that they are all booked up months ahead by tour agents. We paid more than DOUBLE the original price, it didn't include a transfer to the train station and they told me the taxi price would be double what i eventually paid. To top it all off, friends had booked their train tickets earlier that day!

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE...THEY ARE NOT THERE TO HELP YOU, THEY ARE THERE TO TRICK YOU OUT OF YOUR MONEY BY MAKING YOU THINK THEY ARE ONE OF YOU!!!

The dorm at Hanoi Backpackers Hostel (HBH) costs USD7.50 for the 10 bed dorm. The dorm itself is clean and tidy with its own bathroom (additional bathrooms available upstairs). Lockers are provided under the beds for you bags. I was disappointed to see that the dorm doors didn’t lock so anybody can, and did, walk in. Downstairs is a bar, as well as upstairs, a kitchen area where they serve all day breakfasts and a travel desk. The free breakfasts consists of baguettes, butter, jam, noddles and coffee/tea (which is available all-day). The staff are very friendly and helpful and knowledgeable about Hanoi, trips and various travel advice. I booked a Ha Long Bay trip with them which was very good and enjoyable. There is free, fast internet available. The hostel can be noisy at times particularly around the reception area and downstairs bar area. This noise can travel into the dorms making it difficult to get to sleep or stay asleep. In addition, the rounding up of people, at 8am, for the various trips is a very noisy event (particularly when the American or Canadian guy does it!). However, all in all, this is a good hostel to stay at. Recommended.
