A group of five of us stayed in the downtown version of this hostel for 5 nights.

The pros.

It's lively and a great place to meet people.
The food is good.
Great location.
Comfy beds.

The cons.

We paid for an air conditioned 6 bed dorm. They turn the aircon off in the morning and turn it on again in the evening. This is completely fine if everyone is out all day. I was at the hostel one of the days and they refused to switch it back on. I said that I'd paid for an air conditioned room, at first I got a lame excuse about check out times which I don't see was relevant as I was staying 5 nights. After going back and forth for a while the lady point blank refused to switch it on (it being late afternoon and sweltering in the room).

We went out for some drinks and I came back to find that the aircon was on but at a higher temperature, I went downstairs to see if they'd adjust the temp for us. The guy wanted to come up himself and wake everyone to adjust it as he refused to loan me the remote, which in itself is ridiculous, the remote should be in the room so that guests can adjust the temp themselves like every other hostel and hotel in the world. I was fairly pissed off at this stage and to add insult to injury I turned around to go back to bed (the guy was not giving up the sainted air con remote for love or money and I didn't want to have him wake those who were asleep in the dorm) and there was a big rat scurrying out the back door.

We also suspect that the place had bed bugs. My mate an I had some suspect looking bites on our legs while we stayed here. The sheets are changed every time time someone checks out and on the face of it the place looks spotless.

The food is yummy but completely overpriced, most mains start at 90,000 dong. The beer is also a rip off starting at 35000 a beer where if you step outside and go to a bar you'll pay 5000 for draft and 15000-20000 for a bottle.

Don't leave your belongings in the safety deposit box, they have a sign in and out system for it which is fine only they don't ask for any ID when you want your stuff back. Unless they can remember the names and faces of hundreds of guests every day this doesn't seem very secure. Anyone could have clocked the name and belongings of someone else on the sign-in sheet, came back later when their shift changed and claimed to be that person to get their belongings. You can see everything everyone has in the safety deposit box, names and descriptions. Absolutely crazy.

All in all I found this hostel over rated and the staff completely unhelpful and unaccomodating when there was a request or a problem. I would definitely stay somewhere else which is a pity as we stayed in Hue Backpackers (same company) and it was great. I was expecting a similarly good stay here but was very disappointed.

Stayed here with friends for 4 nights in Hanoi - really really happy with staff, lodging, food, drinks, location. Stayed in the Ma May Hostel, which is in the middle of the Old Quarter - the best place to stay in Hanoi. Shared bathrooms on each level are cleaned by staff every 2 hours - which makes the stay super comfortable. Awesome place to meet new people, everyone is extremely social - and bar staff take everyone to the illegal bars post curfew. Was there for Australia Day 2013 - the hostel bar opens at 6.30 am - definitely a day to remember - if there is a big event whilst your in Hanoi, make sure you are here at the time. Best part about the stay was that the people you meet are generally doing the same trip - we travelled from north to south, and found many people doing the same - so you keep running into the same people at the major stops making your way through Vietnam. Very highly recommend this hostel !

I only stayed here one night but during my short stay I was very pleased with the service and overall quality of my stay. It seemed very sociable and they seemed to think of everything to make a backpackers life that bit easier- locker under bed for back pack and small beside locker with plug and light; everyone had a key to the dorm; communal shower but still private with lock, soap, towels to rent; clean maintained toilets, free water tank to refill; activities every evening (drinking related); free internet (but slow wifi); helpful staff; good food at the restaurant; breakfast included (3 choices to order from); great location right in the centre of the old quarter (could get a bit noisy from the street).

From all the places i've stayed at while travelling sea i easily liked this one the most. The dorms weren't mind blowing but everything around definitely was. I met heaps of amazing people here, had a great night out which started at the new part of the hostel and just loved the 2 crazy nights at castaway trip. Perfect for open-minded single travellers. But probably a disaster for people who prefer a quiet accomodation.

Stayed here for two nights on our trip to Vietnam.

Good points
Location - very central in old quarter
Busy hostel with other travellers
Free walking tour
Free Breakfast - Pancakes were yummy!

Bad points
Private rooms are in a seperate building opposite where there is no reception. There was an old security guy sitting on the wall opposite, (some of the time!). There was no safe in the room also. So I was concerned leaving passports etc in the room.

The Bar closes at about 9pm and rooftop only open occasionally so there was not the atmosphere I was expecting. Staff were not the friendliest either.

All in all it was OK but I much preferred the Little Hanoi Hostel Le Thai To see my other review.

Spent a week with friends at the Hanoi Backpackers Hostel in Oct. 2012 as we started a 4 month excursion through SEA. The dorms were perfect for a group of 4 and had plenty of secure storage, showers were good, and the rooftop terrace was great for relaxing after a long walking tour of the city. The staff is friendly and it's a great place to meet fellow travellers who you will most likely run in to over and over again in different cities. Although the Ha Long Bay tour was pricey, it was an unforgettable experience.

To put my review into context my main purpose for traveling is not to get dunk every night or spend time with inconsiderate, noisy travellers.

Focusing purely on the accommodation, it's actually ok. Secure rooms, plenty of storage space, good showers and plenty of facilities. Local staff are friendly if you treat them with equal respect.

It's just not my kind of atmosphere here though when everything is about loud music, drinking and paying for trips to go drinking. Why not stay home and do that?

Drink beer, eat, book your tours and transport outside the hostel to get it cheaper and absorb a little bit more in the culture of the country you are visiting.
