“Fantastic cooking course”
Reviewed August 12, 2014 via mobile

Having already done another cooking course in Vietnam and not loving it, we booked in with high hopes, and they were more than met!

Antony took us to the markets where we purchased all the good for our class, and tried different street foods too (some of which were amazing, others more adventurous than delicious)!

He was a great teacher, and included some basic knife skills and other tips and tricks outside of what we were cooking.

We were the only two in the class, so had personal attention the whole time, and it was great to be able pick which dishes we wanted to make!

Couldn't recommend it more highly, thanks for a great lesson, I've already been practicing at home :-)

“Chef Anthony is amazing”
Reviewed June 18, 2014 via mobile

Had a one on one evening class with chef Anthony and it was absolutely terrific. We cooked pho, spring rolls, and grilled fish. Anthony let me choose the menu and then we went shopping in the market for all of the ingredients. He explained everything in detail and we even tried some random street food to get a fun taste of Vietnam while shopping. Anthony's English is excellent and he was able to explain all of the delicate intricacies in detail. Such a great experience. Not rushed, not pushy, and very hands on. Whether you're an experienced cook or just learning, this is a class for you.

Not sure why previous reviewers didn't like it. I guess it all depends on the chef. If you take this class with Anthony (who worked in a French restaurant in hanoi for a number if years and knows western food as well) you will really enjoy yourself.

“Great experience, lovely food!”
Reviewed May 5, 2014

Overall a great introduction to Vietnamese food and cooking.

All in all around 4 hours - of which around 1-1½ hour was spent touring the local market where chef Anthony showed us around, explaining different ingredients used and sampling the local cuisine (deep fried river worms, yum).

Back in the kitchen Anthony and his assistant were very helpful making it a fun and informative experience. We learned how to make a mean pho as well as a few other dishes like grilled pork meatballs.

Would recommend taking this class on arrival in Vietnam (as opposed to towards the end like we did) to give you a bit more confidence around the street food stalls across the country.

“Worst cooking lessons ever...”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

After a great cooking lesson in Cambodia, I wanted to join another one in Hanoi. I read some reviews on trip advisor and decided to sign up for the orchid cooking class.

I did not finish the lessons, because the market visit felt already like a bad joke. Here some reasons for the worse rating:

- We had to wait 1.5 hour in the restaurant, before we went to the market.
- They informed us in the morning after our booking, that we not able to join the "real" classes and get some private lessons, which will happen in the small kitchen of the restaurant.
- The visit of the market was nothing else than shopping the ingredients for our meals. We didn't get any information about the offered products on the market. It was just as interesting as I would go there by myself. We spent there around 15 min.
- The hygienic doesn't seam to bother them. Smoking in and around the open kitchen didn't make it really pleasant for me.
- The chef didn't speak one word in english.
- We didn't have a choice what we cook and we didn't not even get informed about the meal.
- They didn't recognize the difference between "cooking" and "learn to cook". I did not feel like the chef could give me any informations and tricks of the vietnamese cuisine. He just gave us commands.
- We decided to cancel the class and not waste any more time in this kitchen. We payed for the food they bought on the market. At least we got the rest of the money back.

Go and cook somewhere else! There for sure better and more reliable restaurants. This was not professional at all. Hanoi is too exciting to waste the time in the orchid kitchen!
