“good value and friendly staff”
Reviewed July 12, 2009

we were on a grad trip in a group of 9 with tight budget. while we have booked for 3 rooms but when we arrived the rooms were not available, instead we were transfered to other guesthouse nearby but still paying the same price. while not getting to stay at there, we actually get better rooms but did not need to pay more.

by the way, we also booked tours with them with very competitive price as compared with other agencies around. and we get very friendly tour guide that following us throughout the tour in halong bay and Sa Pa.

we have had amazing tour with the arrangement from the friendly staff in hanoi guesthouse. the enjoyment we get is priceless.

There are so many reasons to recommend this lovely guest house. The rooms are clean, well kept, spacious and very secure. The water is always hot and the location is great. But by far the most outstanding praise must go to the staff who are incredible. You feel like you're staying with family, and nothing is too much trouble – they really bend over backwards to accommodate every request and make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. It's also worth noting that some of the best English in Asia is spoken here and that even after a long day, there's always a warm smile and genuine concern for the happiness of their guests.

We booked two tours through the guest house – Sapa and Halong Bay. They even phoned the tour operator to say we were awkward and apt to complain so that we got the best of everything! In both cases we found ourselves on tours with people who had booked through other agents and were paying more than we had for shorter tours. Both tours were superb and fantastic value for money – I can recommend both, but the Sapa tour was our highlight and I would strongly suggest taking the 4 day tour. If you want a straight 'booze-n-puke' experience, take the cheap beer boat to Halong, but for anyone who wants to really enjoy either of these stunning places and still likes lively evenings, the slightly more expensive tours are well worth the extra money – we had great cabins on the train and boat, and a lovely hotel in Sapa as well as a home stay on the longer trip. If you like your sauce, beware! Drinks on the boat are extortionate, so buy them from the floating vendors near the caves on the first evening or smuggle some aboard. The guest house looked after all our luggage while we were away and greeted us like old friends on our return. I trusted them completely.

Finally, breakfast is included, and we had no problem booking through Hostelworld. I would go that route for ease. Hanoi is a city which experiences long periods of rain and cold weather – the rooms aren't damp as someone suggested, but the atmosphere can be – nothing a quick airing doesn't sort. I really don't think you can do better in Hanoi, and in a crazy ultra-vibrant maze of a city, it's good to have somewhere safe amongst friends.

After travelling throughout Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand we now know that you can never be 100% sure your reservation will hold good at any hotel, same goes for an airport or railway pickup but they always have somewhere else you can stay or you use a local taxi.
We stayed here for three nights at the start of the Vietnam leg of our round-the-world trip. We booked via Hostelworld and arriving late at night by plane from Japan we asked for an airport pickup. The driver met us which at least confirmed we were expected at the hotel but he drove like Jenson Button on acid to get past the other traffic. Scary stuff.
We had the room at the top with the verandah - great view of the street life in the mornings. Decor a bit tired, room a bit musty, shower ok and the bed was comfy enough (good firm mattress) - all typical of SE Asia and what you expect. Laundry took an extra day to dry because of bad weather - they don't use driers here.
Mrs Linh is typical of hotel managers in the region - she runs an efficient and friendly ship and she is also on the make and will try and persuade you to take tours which she gets commission on. This is fair enough and makes life easy but you can save money by shopping around - you just need to be firm from the outset. Kangaroo Cafe is better value for excursions.
We enjoyed our stay here, the breakfast is fine (coffee and a fresh baguette or noodles), the free internet is certainly handy and the location is great. I would happily stay here again.

I felt so welcome because of Lihn who takes care of you as you are an old friend. They can also fix you traintickets or a Halong Bay tour. Book in advance because they dont have many rooms. Clean, friendly staff, nice location, and great value for money. I will go back soon because my flight back home is from Hanoi.

My husband and I arrived in Hanoi at 10pm, flying in from Beijing. So I booked a room with airport pickup, based on the good reviews I found on the internet. Booking was a challenge, I used the booking form on their site, but never got a reply. So I sent an email instead, again no reaction. I didn't know how good the internetconnections were in VIetnam, so I tried a third time and called.... Mrs Linh answered and was very friendly. She said something about getting many emails from different websites and arranged a room for us. She confirmed by email, so everything was sorted out before we left.
At the airport: there was no pickup. I called the guesthouse and was told they forgot, so maybe I could arrange a taxi, which we did.
We arrived at 14 Bat Su street and there we were told there was no room available. They arranged a room at one of the hotels next door. It was past midnight, we were tired, so we just took the room. The next morning we spoke to Mrs Linh and she had some kind of explanation why the booking went wrong. Probably [--], but we could stay at the other hotel for 18 US, the bed was good and the shower was hot, so we decided to stay there. We did have breakfast at the Hanoi Guesthouse, because the breakfast at the other hotel was too expensive. The breakfast at the Hanoi Guesthouse was very disappointing.
Mrs Linh was very friendly, but I didn't believe a word she said. She just makes up things if it is usefull to her. So you never know whether she tells the truth or not.

We prebooked our room in Hanoi Guesthouse based on the reviews here & on Hostelworld. I'm happy to say we were not disappointed! After 24 hrs on a bus we wanted to feel pampered and cared for and was not disappointed. Our room was lovely & my fiance was delighted to note the small touches like a hairdryer in the room, complementary water on arrival (and departure), they even kept a light breakfast for our return as we'd left to do some shopping early in the morning.
As far as tours & tickets go, we shopped around but open tour bus tickets were cheaper from the guesthouse than many other agencies; the HaLang Bay tour was superb & we felt it was more than value for money.

If we're ever back in Hanoi - arrange to stay here. They've only got 7 or 8 rooms but it's worth it... even if it's a couple dollars more than some places.
