Great stay up here. We got a excellent room in the building in the quiet Tho Xuong alley. Front side room with a nice view at the cathedral did cost us 20$. Small walk from the cathedral and the lake, some nice bars and restaurants just around the corner. Make sure to end up at the right Especen, we saw various copycat Especen hotels in Hanoi, one just one street away.

I booked a family room to stay in Hanoi. Nice and neat room.
Just stay here if you really wanna feel like a local.
Located at the heart of Hanoi, it is a perfect place to stay wherever you wanna go around the city.
The minus point is this hotel don't have any elevator (I stayed on the 4th floor) but it's reasonable because of minimum space of the building.
Just perfect!

On a side street by the Cathedral. Helps to keep the noise down. The room was excellent for the price. Make sure you book with the correct Especen, we noticed a few copycats around the area (typical Vietnam).

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor are quieter

I stayed one week at Especen in the family room. The location is very convenient at the heart of Hanoi, couple of minutes away from the cathedral, and surrounded by shops and street food. The staff was always very helpful (to park my motorbike etc...) and the flexibility (cancellation policy) was a good +.
The room was clean, spacious, comfy and overall quiet (though I was unlucky to be there the week they were rebuilding the road downstairs during the night but it happens!).
I recommend this hotel for good value and good service!
Enjoy your stay in Hanoi

We stayed for just one night, but after a short trip to Sapa and Halong Bay we have decided to spend our last night in VIetnam because the room was great, and all the staff was very kind and helpful too. The hotel is very well located and clean, so I strongly reccomend it!!

I stayed with my girlfriend for a week in Especen hotel and all i can say is that we had a great time there. We stayed on the 2nd floor ( there happens to be two builings owned by the hotel on the same street) and we had a big room with a massive bed. Rooms were clean and the toilet was OK . We had a big flat TV with satellite channels and WIfi connection was Fine although a bit slow sometimes. The staff was friendly and very helpful. We payed $19 per night. The hotel is located in a back alley so away from the noisy streets of the old quarter although the days we were there was street works which ended quiet late sometimes until 2am but that isnt the hotel fault.highly recommendable.

Thanks so much for your review & for staying with us! Also thanks so much for your praise!
Luckily, the street repaired was finished yesterday already. The street now is so nice & there's no noise at night anymore. Cheer!

After one night in another hotel which was supposed to be good as well we moved here and were simply amazed. We paid 18$ for a double-room with AC (and I think I remember a TV). It wasn't too big, but very clean and not moist or smelling at all. Plus the matress wasn't made of stone :)
The staff was surprisingly nice and helpful, they gave us a map which was the first usable one on this trip because it didn't just contain ads.
The hotel is situated in a small soi near the Saint-Joseph cathedrale in 5 - 10 minute walking distance to the old town, the night-market, the Hoa-Lo prison and the Hoan-Kiem lake. If you're not too lazy you can also walk to most of the other sights including the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum :)
For breakfast, check the "La Place" just around the corner.
