This hotel has a good review in the budget section of the Lonely Planet guide, and we booked it in person. The hotel is a little tricky to find being located on a small side street off another side street (Pho Bat Su). Once you are acquainted with the location it's easy to find your way around the old quarter of Hanoi.

The rooms were large and clean, and included air conditioning, satellite TV and mini bar. Deluxe rooms include a balcony overlooking Pho Bat Su. Note that this is a small hotel with only 8-9 rooms, and some of the rooms are up many flights of stairs, with no lift to help reach those giddying heights!

The bathroom included a bath, though as seems to be fairly standard in Hanoi, had no shower curtain, so the whole bathroom floor gets wet when you take a shower. They also provide the scummy rubber sandals that all Vietnamese hotels seem to for walking on the wet bathroom floor if you think that's preferable.

The staff are helpful for tours, booked through ODC Travel which if you check reviews online, is one of the few with generally good reviews.

The breakfast includes a choice of toast, deep-fried egg, jam, butter, noodle soup, juice etc, though not a buffet like some hotels.

We got a deluxe room for $20 and a standard (which was more than adequate for our needs) for $15.

Very friendly staff, went out of their way to help us with travel advice. Good location in Hanoi's old quarter. Nice and cheap as well!

We stayed in Stars Hotel at Bat Su in early March 2006. I found this place convenient, clean and the staffs friendly. The room rate is reasonable compare to similar class hotel in the surrounding old quarter. I would not hesitate to suggest this place to firends who are looking for budget hotel in Hanoi.

We booked 2 superior rooms on the internet with email confirmation which allowed changes up to 48 hours before arrival. A week beforehand, we phoned to ask if it was possible to downgrade to cheaper rooms. The receptionist said this was not possible as they do not know whether cheaper rooms were available. Eventually, after some questioning on my part on why could she not check the reservation book, we were able to exchange rooms.

The second room was reserved for our 17 years old nephew who was arriving a few days after us. On the day his arrival from England, we informed the staff that we would be collecting him at the airport and would be back by late afternoon. On our return, we were told the room had been given to another guest since we had not appeared by 2pm, and we would have to find another hotel. They then blamed the problem on us for having made an error with the date in our initial booking. Luckily, I had a copy of the email confirmation which had the correct details. Eventually they apologized and confessed a group of tourists had arrived and they did not want to turn them away. They suggested that another bed could be put in our room for free that night.

Departing the next morning, we were overcharged for our drinks in the room compared to prices listed. When this was pointed out, the receptionist curtly replied "You pay what you want then" as if I had made up the price!

The room was okay...but the service was horrid.
Everytime we went down to go on the internet, eat ect. we were hassled to book a tour..which is didn't want to do.
Then when we did book tickets with them to Sapa on the train, they charged us for soft sleeper and gave us hard sleeper.
We came back from Sapa, expecting it all to be resolved. No way! They kicked us out of the hotel, refused a refund and when we sat outside and told everyone not to go in there, they came out and threatened assult..and we are not young.
In the end we took less than half of what we were owed which was something like $50 US.
All in all a VERY bad experience.
